Good Evening,
I am at my sons for a few days. Just pulled in this afternoon from S. C.,
N. C., Va., Ky and Tenn.
I visited with Phillip Campbell who is the present owner of both Henry and
Jane and Abraham and Winnie's home places. I visited the graves of Winnie
and Abraham.
Abraham had a place (it had been filled in later) just under the eave of the
log house where they could fight the Indians if necessary. Henrys house
had the logs covered with wood boards but Philip had taken part of the wood
covering off of one wall and had build a new hearth for the fireplace.
There was an old picture of wagons loaded with logs coming down the
mountains pulled by about four pairs of horses.
Also, was told that Winnie was the daughter of John Sevier, the officer in
the American Rev. and also the first governer of the state of Tenn. Now you
will not find Winnie listed as one of John's children. It was also told me
that Winnie was raised by the Indians near Halifax (didn't know if it was N.
C. or Va. only a river divides the two). It is possibile that Winnie's
mother was a Cherokee Indian. Winnie was known as a witch. Neither she nor
Abraham was buried in the family Cem. but across the valley on a little
knoll a short distance from their home. The grave site is still know as
the grave of the witch.
Winnie was evidently will educated in the use of herbs as medicine as this
was part of the reason that she was know as a witch because people would
come to her when they were sick and she would know what was wrong with them
and then fix a herb tea of some sort or mix an herb salve for sores. She
also knew things that was happening when she had no way of knowing them.
I must close for now. If you belong to this Campbell family line, please
let me hear from you.
Beth
