Well, Erland, congratulations. If the number of names you've been able to
fill in is important to you, then you've done well. Others of us are more
interested in seeing how far back we can trace our lines; and then there are
those of us who care not for numbers, preferring to flesh out the people we
do have with details about their lives. Google is good, I'll give you that.
I've found it to be a useful tool (along with many others) in various kinds
of research. However, it draws a complete blank on the people I'm looking for
(and yes, I have done advanced searches). Fact is, any search engine or other
tool used by those seeking answers to their family history questions is only
as good as the information that's been entered somewhere by someone.

I come to this list because I have friends (and cousins) here, and enjoy
watching their progress. I repost my queries, occasionally, in hopes that
someone new to the list will have information I've been unable to track down
any other way. A couple of years ago I hit paydirt. And someday, maybe I'll
hit more. Many others can report the same success.

During the course of my participation in this list I've seen many
self-proclaimed computer experts come and go. The most annoying portion of
these comings and goings is the assumption that none of us knows anything and
we've all been sitting here waiting for someone who claims to know everything
to come along and set us straight. Your assumption that we're all dependent
on others to do our work for us is tiresome and inappropriate. Your
suggestions are worthy so let's keep it at that and stop with the character
assasinations of the very people who might, some day, offer you the
information you need.

Good luck in your search.
