Campbells of Blythswood.

This family died out in the male line with Walter Campbell who built the
chapel of St. Columba on the shores of Lochawe at Lochawe Village,
completing the structure in the early 20th century.

The family descended (according to Harvey-Johnston's "Heraldry of the
Campbells" - not always an accurate source) from John Campbell, living in
Glasgow in 1615 whose ancestors were Campbells of Ardentinny, a branch of
the Campbells of Ardkinglass.

John's son Colin was MP for Glasgow (member of parliament) in 1645 (Scots
Parliament)
Colin's second son Colin [I] was first of Blythswood (Will recorded 16 May
1671 and 20th June 1680). The later 18th to 19th century house was
destroyed to build Glasgow International Airport, just south of the Clyde
and west southwest of the city. Colin [I]'s eldest two sons only had
daughters, and the daughter of the eldest son, Mary Campbell inherited
Blythswood and would marry her cousin John Campbell of Woodside, son of her
uncle John of Woodside.
Colin [I] of Blythswood's third son was;

John of Woodside. He married Mary, co-heiress of Douglas of Mains. They
had two sons, Colin (a) and James (b). The eldest son;

Colin (a) of Woodside (MP for Renfrew 1702-1707) succeeded his father John,
married his cousin Mary of Blythswood, and they had two sons; Colin [II] and
James [III].
Colin [II] of Blythswood and
James [III] of Blythswood, both of whom died without heirs.
James (b), second son of John of Woodside, succeeded to the estate of Mains
through his grandmother and took the name Douglas. He married first Isobel,
daughter of Hugh Corbet of Hardgray and they had issue, a son;
1) John (Campbell) Douglas (see below)
James married a second time to Rebecca Wallace, and died in 1743 leaving two
further sons;
2) James Campbell who went to Virginia, married Catherine, daughter
of George Brent, leaving issue:
i] Archibald Douglas Support, who died without issue on
the 17th of January 1804.
3) Colin Campbell who died unmarried.
1) John Douglas of Mains (see above, son of John & Isobel) married in 1732
Agnes, daughter of Jones of Clober. Their eldest son was

James Campbell [IV] of Blythswood (which he inherited in 1767). He resumed
the name of Campbell in inheriting the Blythswood estate and married in 1755
Henrietta, dau. of James Dunlop. She d. in 1788. He died in on the 8th of
Jan 1773 leaving issue;

Lt. Col. John Campbell [V] of Blythswood, killed at Martinique in 1794, died
without issue. He was succeeded by his brother;
Major Archibald Campbell [VI] of Blythswood, who died unmarried in 1838.
His uncle;

Robert Douglas m. Sarah Davis and d, 1804 leaving issue;
Colin Douglas of Mains b. 26 Jan 1781. He married on the 24th of August
1805 Sophia Armine, dau. of J. Boydell. She d. 19 Sept 1826 and he d. 29
Apr 1820, leaving issue, two sons, Archibald and Colin:

Archibald Campbell [VII], 7th Laird of Mains, succeeded to Blythswood ("as
12th Laird" although I can't figure how) on the death of his cousin Major
Archibald Campbell of Blythswood in 1838. He then resumed the name of
Campbell. He was MP for Glasgow Burghs 1806-09 etc. He married Caroline
Agnes, dau. of M. Dick of Pitkerro. She d. 28 Nov 1897. He d. July 1868,
leaving issue.

Their eldest son Archibald married but had no children and Blythswood and
Mains plus his baronetcy and title of Baron (Lord) Blythswood which he had
been granted, passed to his younger brother Sholto Douglas Campbell b. 1839
etc.

You should also find a more accurate version of this description of the
family in the 'Scots Peerage' (many volumes and Ed. by Balfour-Paul) under
'Blythswood' in most major city libraries in any English speaking country -
you don't mention where you are, as seems to be usual with people on this
List, so I can't advise. If you are in Scotland, Canada, Australia or NZ,
there will be copies in any larger library. In the US I know of copies in
Denver, LA and NYC city Libraries.

I hope this is some help.
