J.P.,

Some of the Catholic Campbells from Lough Neah were originally MacCumhails
according to MacLysaght's Irish Surnames (or is it Family Names of Ireland?)
The former I think.
It might be worth trying under that name. The name change was to have
something to look less intimidating on your CV (to put it into modern terms)
and many Highland Scots with 'Mac' names did the same - for example when
Isobel MacTavish arrived in Canada she began to use Isobel Thomson (Mac
Tavish being a colloquial form of Mac Thamais or son of Thomas). In
Scotland this was because the Lowland Scots had a prejudice against anyone
with a Mac name, thinking they would only have the Gaeelic I suppose, but
also because of earlier cattle raids by Highlandres on the Lowland farms.
