I am a descendant of the Campbell family which first settled in Albemarle Co. Virginia at an early date. Once upon a time, Albemarle Co covered a large area all the way West.
In 1761 Amherst Co VA was formed, from parts which were formerly Albemarle Co.
The in 1808 Nelson Co was formed, from some parts which were formerly Amherst Co.
For example: let's say an early Campbell settler bought a large piece of land early in Albemarle Co VA. Without ever moving an inch, his original land may later be called Amherst Co, and finally be called Nelson Co, and all without any physical moving involved.
Apparently, this is just the case for my ancestors, who bought a large piece of land very early, and this land is on both sides of the Piney River. This river is the dividing line of Amherst and Nelson Counties. So my ancestors came into a certain area very early, and stayed there until my own ancestor left the area permanently about 1881, or slightly later, and took a wagon train west to Texas.
Now let's go back to Amherst and Nelson Counties Virginia.
I believe my ancestors were probably :
#1. George Campbell, who may have been born in Scotland , and who died on May 5, 1777 in Amherst Co VA. He was married to a Margaret. His will may be found in Book #1, page 334. Amherst Co records.
He had 9 children:
Catherine, John,Elizabeth, Archibald, George, Edley, Thomas, Margaret, and Ruth.
#2. George Campbell b. 1710 d. 2-7-1791, married to Catherine (Caty). His Will is found in Book 3, page 169.Amherst Co records.
He had 13 children:
Mary, Sarah, Caty, Ambrose, Joel, George, John, William, Samuel, James, Henry, Edward, and Lucy.
One important feature of this family is, that John the son of George, bought out his siblings, and thereby reconsolidated his Father's original estate. Because of this, I term John Campbell, who married FRances Wright, as "Buy-Out John". My own quirky label for him.
To further complicate things, there are other families in the same exact area, who also use similar names for their children, so there may be several very early Campbell settlers, who all had large families, and hundreds of descendants. They all used John and George and William as favorite names, so it gets very tricky to untangle to lines.
#3. George T. Campbell, Sr. , he married Elizabeth. He died prior to 11-23-1801. His Will may be seen at Book 4, page 319. Amherst Co Records.
He had 9 children:
Capt. George T. Campbell, Jr.; James Campbell; Nancy Campbell; Catherine D. Campbell; John Campbell; Cornelius Campbell; Samuel Campbell; William Campbell; Polly Campbell.
Obviously, with these 3 consecutive generations of Campbell men, and in the same area, and all having large families, the lists of descendants are very numerous.
I am currently working on the specific line of Cornelius Campbell, son of George T.Campbell and his wife Elizabeth. This Cornelius Campbell is said to have married Catherine Campbell in 1816 at Nelson Co Virginia.
I am also very curious to find WHO are the parents of Catherine Campbell, who married in 1816, she should be born from 1795 to 1800 time frame. Her maiden name is Campbell, so she needs a Father named Campbell, probably living in Nelson Co VA, probably born about 1755, give or take.
I appreciate any help that you can give. I will also continue to pass on the information I have been given by many researchers over the years, whose work I build upon, I could not do any of this with out the past work done by others, in whom I am indebted.
Best regards,
Lillian Kathleen Martin
