Ila, and Steven. Sid was born on February 19, 1920 in Vonda, Saskatchewan. After
completing his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Saskatchewan, Sid earned
his Master's Degree and PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Toronto. While at the
University of Toronto, he met Lamie (Miriam Frankel) who was completing her degree. They
married in 1944, an enduring and loving marriage of 57 years. Their son Ralph was born
in 1948 while Sid was conducting classified research at the Atomic Energy Commission in
Chalk River, Ontario. Sid's first teaching position was at the University of Minnesota.
In 1949 Sid and his family moved to Vancouver, where he was the first member of the
newly established Faculty of Medicine at UBC. Son Jon and daughter Debby were born in
Vancouver. Over the next 35 years, Sid had a remarkably distinguished career in the
Department of Biochemistry. An award winning scientist and researcher in the field of
nucleic acids, he shared laboratories and ideas with three Nobel laureates. Sid was a
prolific author and a dedicated teacher, and was especially proud of his students' many
accomplishments. Sid was a member of the UBC Senate, and led the initiative to establish
the Judaic Studies Program at UBC. In 1961, Sid was awarded a Killam Fellowship, which
allowed him time from teaching to co-found Metropolitan Biomedical Laboratories, now
part of MDS Metro. Upon Sid's retirement in 1985, a unique scientific symposium was held
in his honour, attended by many scientists from academia and industry. The success of
this symposium led to the establishment of a perpetual endowment which funds the S.H.
Zbarsky Scholarship, awarded annually to a graduate student in the Department of
Biochemistry. Sid was recognized for his many contributions on the occasion of the
Jubilee Anniversary of the UBC Faculty of Medicine. In addition to his involvement in
his professional career, Sid was a vital member of his community, serving as President
of the Vancouver Talmud Torah school and on the boards of many organizations. Even after
Parkinson's disease severely limited his ability to interact with the community, Sid was
deeply involved in the lives of his family, especially his grandchildren, and somehow
was able to retain his wonderful sense of humour throughout adversity. According to
Sid's wishes, donations may be made to the Vancouver Talmud Torah, 998 West 26th Avenue,

RILEY _ Frances (Dime) died quietly at home in Winnipeg on Friday, May 3, 2002 after a
brief illness and a long, full life. She was a woman of many accomplishments but was
best known for her grace, kindness and integrity. Dime was born in Winnipeg in 1917, the
daughter of Harold and Myrtle Aikins. Her grandfather Sir James Aikins founded the
Canadian Bar Association and was Manitoba's Lieutenant Governo r. Her great-grandfather,
James Cox Aikins was also Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba and a minister in the
MacDonald federal cabinet. Her upbringing was in an atmosphere of privilege, but also of
duty. By age 17, Dime had matriculated in Winnipeg and completed a further year's
schooling in England. At the Aikins's summer home near Minaki, Ontario, Dime had
developed skills in swimming, diving, paddling and helping to entertain her family's
many guests. After completing an Honour's degree in English and Music at the University
of Manitoba, Dime married Conrad (C.S.) Riley in May, 1940. C.S. was soon off to England
as an officer with the Royal Canadian Artillery, so Dime joined the Canadian Women's
Army Corps (CWAC). In 1942, at age 25, she commanded the first Company of 500 CWAC
officers and enlisted women posted to England, where she occasionally reunited with C.S.
In 1943 Dime was honorably discharged, with the rank of acting Major, to return to
Winnipeg and give birth to their first child, Conrad Jr. C.S. returned in December, 1944
and he and Dime spent 55 more years together, based in Winnipeg. Although Dime chose to
focus on being a homemaker and to be supportive of C.S. in his career and his
activities, she found time to help others and distinguish herself. She worked hard for
many organizations, including the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society, the United
Way, Junior League, Balmoral Hall and St. John's-Ravenscourt schools. Dime essentially
completed a Masters degree in English and Philosophy, passed the Canadian Securities
Course and was always involved in extension courses and study groups. She attended
weekly yoga exercises for over thirty years, to the end of her days. To complement
C.S.'s passion for flying, Dime became a licensed private pilot and then went on to
achieve her Float Plane endorsement. She could paddle a canoe through a November Delta
Marsh loaded with dogs, guns and husband. She became a great chef. Most significantly,
Dime paid attention to people. She had a smile and a patient ear for everyone and never
forgot who your aunt was and never failed to be aware of and congratulate you for any
achievement. Dime was predeceased by her husband, C.S. in 1999. She is survived by her
sons , Conrad and Dennis and their families. A service of remembrance will be held for
Dime on Wednesday, May 8 at Westminster United Church, Maryland & Westminster in
