VARCOE _ Gwen (nee Cather) passed away peacefully on March 19th, 2003, aged 93 years.
She was predeceased by her husband Britton, and survived by her four children, Britton,
Martha (David), Judith and Katherine (John); grandchildren, Jordan, Caleb, Jessica,
Julia, Alison, Sarah, Matthew, and Benjamin; and great-grandchildren: Emma Thea and
Aubrey. She was the grandchild of Gustave and Mathilda Roedde, the City's first
bookbinders, living in the Roedde House, now a museum, as a child during the First World
War. Gwen had a passionate interest in ideas and a life long love of reading that she
shared with her children grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the many students in her
rewarding career as a teacher. She retired to the waterfront at Robert's Creek. This
quickly became a summer retreat for the entire family seduced by Gwen's wonderful
blackberry pies, the serene beauty of her garden and her ever present sense of humour
and love of stimulating conversation. She was tireless in pursuit of the occasional
bounty of the seashore and liked nothing better than a refreshing dip in the ocean, a
practice that lasted well into her 80's. Gwen survived all but one of a coterie of
friends who enjoyed many decades of friendship centred around the intellectual and
social delights of the bridge table. She maintained, until the very end of her life, an
abiding interest and love for her extended family. She remained it's constant focus and
inspiration. She will be greatly missed. In liue of flowers, please make a donation to
