MacLEAY _ Ian Alexander Ian passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care facility at
Lions Gate Hospital on March 25, 2003. He was born in Montreal on November 18, 1932 and
was predeceased by his parents Charles and Frances MacLeay. He will be sadly missed by
his mourning family including his loving wife Sylvia and his children Susan (Blair),
Catherine, Bradford (Janet), Scott, and Larissa. His monuments to the future are his
grandchildren, Nichelle, Amy, Ethan, Kevin and Molly. Nephew, Morgan (Debra) and son
Derek as well as friend Wayne Penney deserve special mention. Many other family members
and friends have been touched by his genuine caring and loving nature as well as his joy
for life. After graduating from McGill with a degree in Philosophy and Psychology, Ian
obtained a Masters degree in Counselling from the University of Vermont and chose a
career working with children. His teaching career began with the Protestant School Board
of Greater Montreal. Moving to Lennoxville, he went into administration and became the
Director General of the Eastern Townships Regional School Board. The MacLeays moved to
West Vancouver in 1974 and Ian returned to teaching so that he could work with children
once again in District 44, North Vancouver. His greatest satisfaction was counseling
elementary children and their parents to resolve early learning problems. Ian had a
lifelong love of sailing and got his early practice on lakes in the Laurentians and the
Townships. The BC/Alaska coastline was his passion and he enjoyed many hours on the
water with Sylvia and his children. He belonged to the Eagle Harbour Yacht Club, the
Vancouver Rowing Club and the West Vancouver Yacht Club. During his five year struggle
with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, Ian received top quality health care. Special thanks are
extended to Doctors Klimo, Kelpin, and Sugar from Lions Gate Hospital and Dr. Voss from
VGH - Cancer Agency. Many nurses, specialists, technicians, and hospital employees
contributed to his well being. At his request, a private family dinner will be held to
celebrate his life. There will be no other memorial service. Donations to the Lions Gate
Hospital Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society will be gratefully received.

MAKI _ Margaret. Born in Kavia, Finland, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2003 in
Vancouver, BC Margaret is survived by her son Rick and his wife Sue; and sister Mya
Genovy. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 01 at 10:30 a.m. within the
Forest Lawn Burial Park, 3789 Royal Oak Avenue, Burnaby
MALCOLM _ Susan Eileen Susan passed away peacefully at the Rosedale Hospice in Calgary,
March 26, 2003. This courageous lady excelled in her role as a loving mother and mentor
to her sons, Jordan and Matthew, a best friend to her sister Linda, and a true friend to
all those who had the privilege of knowing her. Susan constantly rose to the challenges
of her illness and was grateful for everyday miracles. Special thanks to the entire
Rosedale staff led by Dr. Grisdale for their devotion and unique care. Heartfelt thanks
to Dr. Susan Bell for her care and friendship to Susan and her family throughout Susan's
journey. Much appreciation to the Vancouver Police Department and the R.C.M.P. for their

MARRINGTON _ Jacqueline (Watkins) passed away 22 March 2003 after a hard-fought battle
with cancer. She is reunited with her mother (Ruth) and father (Cyril). Jacquie lived
her life with a deep and abiding passion, faithfulness and love for her family and
friends. She continues to live in the hearts of Leonard, her husband of 52 years; her
children, Jane (Roy), Stephen (April), Peter (Beth), Ross (Alana); sister Patricia
(Don); her four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Jacquie extended her passion
for life by golfing, travelling, gardening, and was a fierce competitor at the bridge
table. A celebration of her life and a memorial tea for her enduring spirit will be held
at Cloverdale Seniors Center, 17671 - 56 Avenue, Surrey, BC on Saturday April 5, 2003 at
3:00 to 5:00 pm. No flowers please, but donations would be greatly appreciated for the
Canadian Cancer Society. Our heartfelt thanks go to the staff and volunteers at the
palliative ward of the Surrey Memorial Hospital who eased Jacquie's passing. You remain
with us, Jacquie, as a whisper in the wind and a spark in our fire of comfort.
MATER _ Robert Frederick (Bob), life partner to Karen Ratnwell, passed away suddenly in
Calgary, Alberta on March 20th, 2003, at age 31. Bob was the loving dad of Scott (12),
Alex (10), Cameron (Bam Bam) (5) and Brendan (Baby Face) (3), all of Calgary. He will be
sadly missed by all his sons and Karen, as well as his mother and father, Sharon and
Fred Mater of Nanaimo, B.C., sister Stacy Lederman of Vancouver, uncle Bob Strang and
Cathy of Nanaimo, and uncle John Mater of Tswwassen, B.C. A memorial service was held in
Calgary, attended by many friends, relatives and co-workers on March 25th, 2003.
McDONALD _ Roderick Alexander Rod passed away suddenly on March 22, 2003 at his home in
Dewdney, BC at 64 years of age. Rod was born in Mission on November 28, 1938 and lived
his entire life in the Mission area. Rod was a well known towboat captain and commercial
fisherman for almost 50 years. Rod will be sadly missed by his 4 sons Steve (Fran),
Kevin (Elizabeth), Mike (Bonnie) and Stewart (Lesley); and his wife Judy. His joy in
life was his grandchildren Christopher, Mandy, Amanda, Michael, Bradley, Cameron and
Abigail. Rod will be missed by his youngest sister Kathleen, his sister Miriam and Brice
Macdougall and their family and by his mother-in-law Violet Inch (nanny). Rod was
predeceased by his mother Edith (Nana Mac); his father George (Grandpa Mac); his brother
Archie and his father-in-law Jim Inch. A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 30,
2003 at 1:30 pm at the Clarke Foundation Theatre at 33700 Prentis Avenue, Mission, BC.

MELNICK _ William Alexander, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on
March 20, 2003 at the age of 79, surrounded by family and friends in his home after a
courageous battle with cancer. He is greatly missed and will forever be remembered by
his devoted family: wife Elizabeth, son Peter, daughter Jennifer (James), grandson
Brandon and other relatives and friends. Funeral service held at Henderson's in
Abbotsford on March 24, 2003.
MORGAN _ Margaret Dorothy passed away in Vancouver on March 25, 2003. She was
predeceased by her loving parents. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 4th
at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby. In

MORRISON _ Agnes Grace passed away peacefully at Royal Ascot Care Centre on March 19,
2003. She was predeceased by her husband George. She will be lovingly remembered by her
sister Bertha and nephews. Agnes will always be alive in the memories of her family and
friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, April 6 at 1:30 pm at St. Andrews's
Wesley Church, 1012 Nelson Street, Vancouver. Memorial donations to St. Andrew's Wesley
Church would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.
MORRISON _ Shirley M. Born July 21st, 1915 passed away peacefully on March 26th, 2003.
Her loving spirit and generous soul shone like a beacon for her family and friends. She
will be deeply missed. No service by Shirley's request. In lieu of flowers, donations to
Heart & Stroke Fund or CNIB.
MURPHY _ Frances Hermine (nee Van Balkom) August 17, 1916 - March 24, 2003, survived by
two sons, Bob (Joan), Winnipeg and Jim (Bev), Maple Ridge; 6 grandchildren, Leah, Daryl,
Dan (Jim and Bev), Laura and Warren (Barb and Stan), Katherine (Bob); 4
great-grandchildren, Nicky, Richard (Laura), Emma, Colin (Leah). She was predeceased by
daughter Barbara of New Westminster. Fran lived most of her life in Vancouver growing up
in a large family (8 children). She is survived by her youngest sister Dorothy
(Victoria) and was very close to all her siblings and was Aunt to a flock of nieces and
nephews. Fran was a ballroom dance teacher in the early fifties, a Real Estate agent in
the seventies, and became a driver for Easter Seal bus organization prior to retirement.
A family celebration of life service will be held April 5th, 2003. Donations to the
Heart Fund, or the Kidney Foundation would be appreciated in Fran's memory.
OBROVAC _ Ana, born on July 1, 1926 in Vrdink Srem, Yugoslavia and passed away March 25,
2003 in Burnaby. Predeceased by her loving husband Vinko (2000) and sadly missed and
lovingly remembered by her children, Mary (Michael) Thomson and Rose (Ivan) Jezerinac;
by her sister Julka of Yugoslavia and by her loving grandchildren Michael, John and
Michelle. Prayers will be offered Sunday, March 30, 2003 at 4:00pm from the Chapel of
Forest Lawn Funeral Home at 3789 Royal Oak Avenue, Burnaby where a funeral service will
take place on Monday March 31, 2003 at 2:00 pm. Reception to follow. "We love you Mom

PARSONS _ Taylor, born May 31, 1985, passed peacefully March 23, 2003 in the presence of
his mother and fathers after a courageous 10 year battle with cancer. He is survived by
mother Tammy, fathers Steve and Lou, brothers Alex, LaMarr, Louis and sister Tshaan.
There will be a celebration of his life for friends, family and all those he touched at
the Sheraton Guildford 15269 - 104th. Ave, Surrey, B.C. April 2 at 6:30pm. In lieu of

REDDING _ Helen Wetmore (nee Oxley) passed away peacefully on March 27, 2003 in
Vancouver, B.C. at the age of 94. Predeceased by her husband, A. Stuart Redding, she
will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Gordon (Gail) and Michael (Helene); her
grandchildren, Kimberley (Michael Angrove), Michael (Jennifer Race), Leigh (Guy Paquin),
Christopher (Amanda Wardrop), and Catherine; her great-grandchildren, Kayleigh and
Taylor Angrove, and Isabelle and Nathaniel Paquin. She is also survived by her
sisters-in-law Kay Redding (Yarmouth, N.S.), Cynthia Oxley (Halifax, N.S.) and Connie
Oxley (Sydney, N.S.) and many nieces and nephews. Warmest appreciation to the staff at
Purdy Pavilion, UBC Hospital, and at Crofton Manor for their support and care. Special
thanks to Pauline Westhead. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 1st 2003
at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Kerrisdale Anglican Church, 2490 W 37th Avenue, Vancouver, BC.

SNASHALL _ Owen Halbert passed away on March 26th 2003, tragically as the result of a
motor vehicle accident, aged 17 years. Owen will be forever missed in the hearts of his
parents Paul and Diane, his halfbrother Caleb, grandmother Edna Snashall, grandparents
William and Elvy Halbert; Aunts and Uncles Dave Snashall, Greg Snashall and Ken and
Brenda Rinke, mentors, James Dodd and George Chapdelaine, many relatives and friends.
Owen will be fondly remembered as an enthusiastic lover of the great outdoors, enjoying
time hiking, biking and fishing. His many close friends will also remember him as an
aspiring athlete. A Celebration of Owen's life will be held on Monday, March 31st, 2003

SPRINGFORD _ Stanley Victor Born May 13, 1924 in Marwayne, Alberta. Passed peacefully in
sleep March 24, 2003 Nanaimo, B.C. Beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather,
husband, brother, and friend. Stan's memory will be forever cherished and remembered by
his loving family and many friends. Stan spent most of his working life at Auto Marine
Electric. He was the first employee and rose to be the general manager and vice
president. Stan first started at Auto Marine in 1948 and retired in 1992. Stan loved to
hunt and fish with his sons and brothers and golf with his friends. He was always there
with a helping hand or a word of encouragement. Stan is survived by his wife of 54
years, Alice, who now resides in Bath Ontario; two sons, Gordon and Darren, living on
Vancouver Island; one daughter, Linda living in Bath Ontario. He leaves behind two
granddaughters Alyssa and Meghan; three grandsons, Michael, Stephen, and Derek; and one
great-grandson, Hayden. Stan is remembered by his surviving sisters, Evelyn, Winnie,
Mary Violet, Rose, and Grace. He has one brother Ken, and is predeceased by his other
brother Frank. There will be a private ceremony at Evelyn's home in Abbotsford on
Sunday, March 30,2003. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to
the Alzheimers society of British Columbia. He was not only our father he was our best
friend. Stan had a life well lived and greatly loved.
STANTON _ Patrick Desmond June 22, 1947 March 25, 2003. Patrick died peacefully at home
surrounded by those who loved him so dearly. Born in Vancouver, he grew up in Burnaby.
His love of adventure and insatiable curiosity took him around the world at 19 years of
age; the first of many great trips exploring interesting places. He attended SFU
starting in 1964, when the university first opened and did his graduate work in
Economics at UBC. Patrick had a nearly 30 year career with the provincial government as
a policy specialist in labour relations. He was respected for his wealth of knowledge
and the integrity and professionalism he brought to his work. Patrick loved hiking,
camping, and kayaking; was an excellent squash player, noted for his sportsmanship, and
an avid reader. Patrick will be remembered for his cheerful presence, boundless
optimism, his sense of equality and justice, but most of all, for his devotion to his
family, and his joy of living life to the fullest. Survived by Linda, his loving wife of
30 years, his beloved daughters Sarah (25) and Alisa (22), his parents Joe and Doreen,
brothers Brian (May) and David, sister Cheryl (Brad) nieces and nephews; Caylee,
Brittany, Joey, Alex, and Matt. Patrick will be greatly missed by Linda's family,
Louise, John, Jack and Elizabeth Woodward. A celebration of Patrick's life will be held
on Saturday, April 12, at 2:00 pm at the First Unitarian Church of Victoria, 5575 W.
Saanich Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Patrick's memory to a
non-denominational organization of choice committed to peace and development in the
third world.
STRONGITHARM _ Dr. Margaret (Mardi) With sorrow in our hearts, we sadly announce the
death of our hero. Mardi died peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 26, 2003 surrounded
by loving family and friends. She is remembered for her courage, strength and
unparalleled zest for life. Mardi was born in Nanaimo, January 2, 1956. She was an avid
student, with interests as diverse as science and Shakespeare, music, and horses. She
graduated from SFU in Kinesiology, and then went on to become a chiropractor
extraordinaire from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. Margaret practiced
mainly in West Vancouver and in Gibsons. She loved the water and was grateful to live
near Howe Sound. A perfect day for Mardi entailed swimming off her sailboat, or
conversations with friends and strangers over Americano coffee. She is remembered by her
family, friends, colleagues, patients and students for her joyous, optimistic outlook,
and for her thoughtful generosity. Mardi is loved and deeply missed by her partner, Sue;
her greatest legacy - daughter, Jessie; and two furry, insane spaniels, Benny and Desi.
Mardi was predeceased by her father, Ted, but will be lovingly remembered by her mother,
Margaret; brothers, Doug (Lois), Bruce (Sheryl) and Deane (Janet); nephew, Colin
(Andrea); nieces, Karen (Rob) and Kelly. She is also loved and missed by her adoptive
parents, Bob and Karen; brother-in-law, Dave (Cheryl); nephew, Michael; and niece,
Jennifer. She remains ever cherished by many great friends, Joan, Danilo, Sheryl, Lori,
Laura, Paulah, and numerous others. Extra special thanks to Dr. Karen Gelmon for her
love, expertise, compassion and invaluable gifts of one more holiday, one more
Christmas, one more birthday, and one last anniversary. Thank you. Deep appreciation to
Drs. Myhill-Jones, Bryson, Jensen, Hawley, Howdle, Thiesson, Shore; and to nurses,
Debbie, Lisa, Leslie, and Natasha, for their excellent care and concern. Heartfelt
thanks to Ruth Armstrong for making some sense of the last few years, and keeping us on
an even keel. Our deepest gratitude and affection for Margaret Bowden and her lovely
assistant, Lori MacIntosh, for their expert nursing; and for supporting the rest of us
in every way during Mardi's final days. We could not have fought this battle as hard or
as long without our remarkable and amazing parents and friends, and their unconditional
love and support. We are grateful to have picked a community as caring and compassionate
as Roberts Creek to raise Jessie. A celebration of Mardi's life will be held at the
Gibsons Yacht Club, 473 Gower Point Road, Gibsons, BC on Friday, April 4th at 12:30 pm.

Roberts Creek Community Elementary School to upgrade their library, and inspire a new
generation of doctors, scientists, artists, free thinkers. Donations may be sent to The

THOMSON _ Dorothy Elizabeth "Doris" January 22, 1910 - March 15, 2003 Passed away
peacefully at Mission Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Predeceased by brother
Jack at age 6, husband Alex "Sandy" in 1965, parents Bill and Lizzie Bateson of Old
Hutton, Westmoreland (Cumbria), England in 1966, daughter-in-law Jean, in 2000 and
youngest son, Malcolm in 2001. Survived by her children Alex (Diana) Thomson, Swift
Current, Sask., Bill (Marlene) Thomson, Kerrobert, Sask., Dorothy (Mac) McNichol,
Kerrobert, Sask., Jean Todd (Jim Percy), Port Coquitlam, B.C. Also 10 grandchildren, 23
great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren in B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan.
Born in Kirby Lonsdale, Westmoreland she had many health challenges as a child. She had
two forms of T.B. and walked with crutches at age 6 and was in a sanitarium for several
months at age 12. In 1927 she emigrated to Canada with her parents to the Saline
District between Simpson and Nokomis, SK. In 1931 she married Sandy. Doris was a willing
volunteer in community activities belonging to Homemakers, Co-op Guild, and the United
Church Ladies Aid. In 1956 Doris, Sandy and the two youngest children moved to the
Mission area. She lived in her current home in Mission since 1966. She was an
enthusiastic gardener and loved to identify the birds that came to the sanctuary of her
backyard. She had many interests, but the center of her world was her family. An avid
reader and Scrabble player till the end, she had also enjoyed OAPA road trips, crochet,
cards, crosswords and garage sales. Doris had enjoyed living in her own home till the
day before her passing. No service at this time, future memorial to be scheduled in SK.

TIDEY _ Errol William, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Lions Gate Hospital at
5AM March 25, 2003. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Tidey who
passed away a year ago. He will be fondly remembered by his sons, John and Alec and
daughter Kathy. Errol's daughter in-law April will greatly miss him. He had 7
grandchildren, Sean, Catherine, Matthew, Bridget, Ania, Nathalie and Elena who loved him
very much. He had a big heart and was loved by everyone. The Tidey family would like to
thank the staff at Lions Gate Hospital, for the love and care they showed their father,
with special thanks to Dr. Peter Schwarze. Funeral Services will be held at West
Vancouver Baptist Church , 1415 Mathers Ave. at 1:00 PM, Thursday, April 3, 2003.
VAUGHAN _ George Ernest passed away peacefully March 24, 2003. Predeceased by son Gary.
A loving husband, father and grandfather. Survived by loving wife Violet, son Greg; much
loved granddaughter Sarah and Grandpa to April; brother Lloyd; cousins, nieces and
nephews; many friends and special friends, Lu, Ron and Jim. George was retired from BC
Electric to BC Hydro in 1976. George was a friend to all who knew him and a volunteer
with a helping hand. No service by request. Loved and greatly missed always. Flowers
gratefully declined.
VIKE _ Ann Elizabeth, late of Abbotsford, B.C. passed into the presence of the Lord on
March 25, 2003 in her 80th year at the MSA Hospital in Abbotsford. She was predeceased
by her parents Gerhardt and Katarina Sawatzky and her husband Edgar Jarl Vike. Survived
by her children: Edward, Phillip (Darcy), Evan (Claire), stepdaughter Betty, 11
grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. She was a wonderful
wife, mother and grandmother; full of love, faith and courage and was devoted to her
family. A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, March 31, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. from
Maclure Road Cemetery, Abbotsford, B.C. followed by a Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m. from
Immanuel Fellowship Baptist Church, 2950 Blue Jay Rd., Abbotsford, B.C. Active bearers
are Edward Vike, Phillip Vike, Evan Vike, Stephen Vike, Ryan Vike and Owen Vike. If

WALKER _ William Albert Frank, born May 20, 1916 in Edmonton, Alberta, to Albert and
Lillian (nee Riley-Nixon.) Formerly of Boston Bar, and more recently, West Vancouver
Care Centre, Bill was called home to be with his "very own Marianne" on March 23, 2003
at Lions Gate Hospital, North Vancouver following a stroke on February 8th, his
step-daughters, Marie and Madeline at his side. Survived by his brother Robert (Janet)
Walker of Tasmania, Australia; brothers-in-law, John (Jean) Hargrove of Parksville and
Russell McDiarmid of Victoria; step-daughters Marie Bergot, his long-time and loving
care giver, of Richmond, Madeline (Marvin) Lockstead of Nanaimo, Sharleine (Jack)
Haycock of Mississauga, Ontario and Sylvia (Ron) Alexander of Powell River; as well as
many nieces and nephews from all parts of B.C. and Alberta specifically Helen, Heather
Grace, Barb, Pat and Percy who faithfully supported us during these recent months, as
well our dearest friends. Predeceased by his devoted wife of 44 years, Winnifred
Marianne (December 4, 2002); his sisters, Annie Webber (1980), Eva Walker (1982). Mabel
Darney (1994), Grace Hargrove (1996), Dorothy McDiarmid (1999), and brother Norman, WW
II (1943). The family would like to convey their appreciation to all the medical and
nursing home staff at West Van Care Centre and Lions Gate Hospital Neurology Unit, as
well as Dr. Peter Schwarz of North Van, for their loving and professional care. Our deep
gratitude is also extended to Drs. Hoffe and de Klerk and staff at St. Bartholomew's
Hospital in Lytton and staff at Ashcroft Long Term Care Hospital for the loving care Mom
and Bill received. We would also like to thank Pastor Richard Stetson of Gloria Dei

WALKINSHAW _ Gordon Edwin, (Gord, Gordie), age 65. Born August 20, 1937 in Calgary, AB.
Passed away at St. Paul's Hospital on March 26, 2003 after a 18 year courageous battle
with heart disease. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and friends. Gord is
survived by his wife Angie; sons, Bruce and Keith; nephews, Andrew and Charlie;
sisters-in-law Maureen, Carmie and all the relatives of the Wickens, Dumbrell, Crozier
and Pomeroy families. An employee of Honeywell Ltd. since 1975 Gord's hard work and
honesty made him as much a success at the office as he was in his personal life. To
those who knew him, Gord was living proof of the power and strength of a positive
attitude. He sustained his intelligence, enthusiasm and sense of humour to the very end.
Memorial service on Thursday, April 3, 2003 at 3pm in Ryerson United Church, 2195 West

WHITTINGSTALL _ Louie Marie of Surrey, BC passed away peacefully on March 26, 2003 at
the age of 92 years. She was loved by her family and friends. Funeral service will be

WIEBE _ George T. Born July 2nd, 1919 in Plum Coulee, MB passed away peacefully on March
27th, 2003 at the age of 83. George was predeceased by his wife Tina in 1979. He is
survived by a brother and sister, 4 children, 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

WILSON _ Robert James. With deep sadness we announce the passing of a much loved
