VAN DE MORTEL Petronella Johanna "Nellie" (Bodd) van de Mortel, March 4,
1916 - September 27, 2003. At peace and reunited with beloved husband, Peter
(March 21, 1917- May 11, 1984). Also predeceased by a son, Theodorus (June
1943 - October1943), sisters, Betsy van de Pere and Lise van der Heide, and
brothers, Theo Bodd and William Bodd. Survived by her remaining children and
their families. Nellie was born in Venlo, Holland in the spring of 1916, the
second child of Theodorus and Agnes Bodd. The Bodd family sold their bicycle
factory in the early 1920's and moved to Watrous, Saskatchewan where her
father purchased a CPR farm. From there, they moved to Regina, before moving
to New Westminster where Nellie spent her teen years. In the trying times of
the 1930's, the enterprising family returned to Venlo, where they opened a
couture shop, importing the finest of French fabrics. In her youth, Nellie
was offered the opportunity to travel to Germany torecord her beautiful
singing voice, but at her parent's wishes, remained in Venlo, and by destiny
met the love of her life, Peter. Nellie and Peter married in Venlo, Holland
in 1939. The first of eight children was born in 1941. Catarina ("Kaye') was
followed by twins, Marianna and Theodorus in 1943, Gerdina in 1945 and
Antonius ("Tony') in 1947. In the fall of 1950, the young family booked
passage on the SS Europa to follow Nellie's parents and siblings in
returning to Canada, and followed by Peter's two brothers and their
families. Nellie and Peter joined her family in Terrace, B.C. before moving
to Prince Rupert in 1951. Another son, Theodorus ("Ted') was born in 1951,
and in 1954, the family became complete with another set of twins bearing
the names of their parents. The family moved to Victoria in 1956, settling
first in Oak Bay, and later purchasing the former Captain Walker house at
1100 West Burnside Road in 1962. Peter was a skilled craftsman and
subsequently built several new homes for his family on further subdivisions
of the land. In 1984, Nellie's husband was taken peacefully, though
prematurely at the age of 67, and she spent her remaining years travelling
and spending timewith her family. Nellie filled the role of the family
matriarch with elegance and grace, and with strength and love. She was a
loving mother to her seven surviving children and their spouses. She was a
doting Nana and Oma to her 19 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and on
September 26, 2003, was blessed by the addition of yet another generation to
her family. Her children and grandchildren bear the family names O'Connor,
Davis, Herring, van de Mortel and Marker, and now reside on Vancouver
Island, in Arizona, Washington, Devon, England and Alberta. To us, her
grandchildren, she was more than grand, and far better than great. To the
