Obituaries (10/03/03)
LINDBERG Halena, mother, grandmother, retired public employee, died in
Victoria September 27th. Halena was a remarkable woman, and every decade of
her life brought new challenges and rewards. She grew up in the 1930's,
surrounded by loving family - parents Olga and Alex Derman, sister Sonia and
brothers Leo and, for all too brief a time, Boris. Times were tough, but
Alex always managed to find money for an ice cream cone at Terry's, and
Sonia provided a succession of back-to-school navy blue coats. The 1940's
brought High School at Mount View followed by Victoria College, which was
full of returning vets, including her future husband Ernie. In the 1950's,
she was a young wife, working hard while Ernie attended UBC and finding time
for adventures including car rallies and rockhounding expeditions in the
Interior. Her home was also a favourite summer holiday spot for nieces Susan
and Sheila, and nephew Vic. In 1960 Halena and Ernie returned toVictoria to
build a house and raise a family. Daughter Alexandra came first, followed 7
years later by son Laurence. She was actively involved with the Victoria
Operatic Society, both as an actress and make-up artist. She worked
seasonallyfor the federal government. The 1970's brought the death of both
parents and a busy time raising kids. She was a member of the Victorian
Celebration Society and the Canadiana Costume Society. She returned to work
full-time for the provincial government. During the 1980's Halena became
increasingly involved with the BCGEU and the Gorge NDP club. She returned to
UVic on a part-time basis and completed a Public Administration Program.
Later she made the difficult transition from wife to widow. During the
1990's Halena lost brother Leo. She began to have health problems of her own
but continued to be extremely active with gardening, baking, poetry and
family and friends. Her family expanded with the addition of son-in-law
Kent. She was thrilled with the arrival of grandson Ian, followed 3 days
later by great-great niece Alexa and was truly a grandmother extraordinaire.
Sadly, the new millennium brought failing health with more days spent
resting or attending medical appointments. At times, it seemed like
willpower alone that kept her going. Her enthusiasm and zest for life never
stopped. Her final illness was brief but intense. She faced it bravely, but
for once her will to live was not enough. Her family would like to thank all
the staff at VGH, especially Dr. Alan Meakes and ICU nurse Michelle, for
excellent care during her last days. Thanks are also due to Dr. Chris
Pengilly, her family physician for the last 23 years, and Dr. Hilary Wass,
her hematologist for 11 years. At Halena's request, there will be no formal
funeral service, but friends and family are invited to gather on her 74th
birthday, Wednesday October 8th, at her residence between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m.
