ELWOOD Gwendolyn J (nee Wood) passed away peacefully in her sleep at Saanich
Peninsula Hospital Extended Care on Thursday, 2 October 2003. Born on
December 18, 1907 in Harrogate, Yorkshire, Gwen led a courageous life and
raised her family with dignity in Victoria. Oak Bay was her home for several
decades where she was known for her graciousness and dry wit by friends and
fellow bridge players. Gwen was a vision in her red raincoat and hat pushing
her cart to the village. Gwen is survived and will be dearly missed by her
son Richard, his wife Sheryl, their children Scott, Julie and Karen; her
daughter Lois George, her husband Bob, their children Haydn (Ani), Craig
(Nancy), and Ryan, and their grandchildren Renan, Avery, and Phaelan. The
good fortune of living in Victoria meant that Haydn, Craig and Ryan each
formed close friendships with Grandma Gwennie. Gwen will be fondly
remembered as Old Nanna by her great grandchildren. The family would like to
thank Dr Ambrose Marsh and the most caring and considerate staff of Gwen's
Extended Care Unit at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation. At

ETHIER Bernard Henry, passed away peacefully on the evening of October 1,
2003 at the age of 80 years after a brief illness. He is survived by his
loving wife of 55 years, Joan; his son Perry (Tanis), and his daughter Penny
South (Earl); grandchildren Dustin and Amber South, and Naomi and Jeremy
Ethier; also his brother Gaston, in Sudbury, Ontario. Ben served with the
RCAF in the marine section for 23 years in Pat Bay, Sidney; Vancouver, B.C.;
Watson Lake, Yukon; Goose Bay, Labrador; Trenton, Ontario and then coming to
B.C. where he retired from the Service. He then spent two years as a bus
driver for the Saanich School District and repairing small outboard motors.
During this time he re-educated himself and started working for B.C. Ferries
where he eventually became the Chief Engineer on the Brentwood/ Mill Bay
Ferry. He shared his knowledge by working with the Air Cadets as a Training
Officer for five years. He loved his work as, for those of you who knew him,
he loved to fix things. He retired at the age of 65 after serving 20 years
with the B.C. Ferry Corp. This allowed Ben even more time to spend with his
family and friends. He had such great passion for life. Everything amazed
him! He tried his hand at politics but it took a couple of years to get
elected as people had to get used to his 'French' way of expressing himself.
He was an Alderman in Sidney for 14 years. When he moved into Summergate
Village with his wife, he also served on that Council. He was recently very
involved with initiating the B.C. Gov't Retired Employees Assn. for the
Saanich Peninsula and Gulf Islands. He loved to curl, golf, play
shuffleboard, fix computers, and meet with his 'coffee' buddies to solve the
problems of the world. But his favourite time was always spending special
moments with his wife, kids, and grandchildren. We'll miss him so much. Love
you Dad! A celebration of his life will be held at St. Andrew's Church,
Fourth Street in Sidney on Tuesday, October 14, at 2:00 pm. Flowers
gratefully declined. Donations may be made to 'Cops For Cancer'.
