(Janet), Kamloops; nieces Linda Larson (Larry), Oliver; Fiona McCauley (Brian) Toronto;
Mary Tien (Erwin), Midland, Michigan; Kim Woodward, Vancouver; great-nephews and nieces;
and great-great nephews and nieces. Melda was born in Drumheller, Alberta, but her
family moved to the Comox Valley when she was eight years old, and she spent the rest of
her childhood in Comox. After graduating from Victoria College, Melda went to UBC and in
1945 obtained a BA with Honours in mathematics. She returned home to teach high school
for a while, and later went to the University of Toronto where she earned a Master's
Degree in mathematics and physics. Melda became the first woman meteorological
forecaster in Canada, stationed in Moncton, New Brunswick. Later she returned to UBC in
Vancouver where she taught mathematics. When Melda returned home to the Comox Valley in
the sixties, the environment and political activism became her full-time career. From
then on, no environmental project was too small, no task too global for her effective
and boundless energy. From saving the lands at Seal Bay, to active participation in
environmental protest, to ensuring the survival of every creature she encountered, Melda
was there for her beloved Comox Valley, for British Columbia, for the world. This short
obituary cannot begin to list all her accomplishments; no words could do justice to her
legacy. But as every creature has lost their best human friend, we humans have lost
more: a woman of great wit, intelligence and fierce independence, a loving friend of
enormous generosity and warmth. "...Nature I loved, and next to Nature, Art. I warmed
both hands before the fire of life. It sinks, and I am ready to depart." Donations in
Melda's memory can be made to any "save the environment" project or cause. Cards and
messages may be sent to niece Linda Larson, c/o Box 1209, Comox, B.C. V9N 7Z8. Wake to

(Bruce); brothers, David Lucas (Margret Samson) and Gordon Lucas; many nieces and
nephews including, Lynne and Larry Koopman and Charlie Zarowski, as well as other family
and friends including neighbours, Nita and Marge. Marnie was born in 1926 in Imperial,
Saskatchewan. She was a schoolteacher who began her career at 18 in a one room school
house in Truax, Saskatchewan. When the family moved to Maple Ridge in 1967 Marnie taught
at Maple Ridge Elementary and eventually became the first librarian there. On and off
Marnie was also a proprietress and reluctant waitress of various restaurants with her
husband George, including in the 1980's, the Maple Ridge Golf Course. Marnie (Mom,
Auntie Marnie, Sis) will be remembered as an important influence in many lives. An
animated and articulate storyteller, she was unconventional in a whimsical way, ahead of
her time with interests in environmentalism, politics, literature and holistic health. A
person with boundless curiosity about others, her 'joie de vivre' will be dearly missed
by all. In accordance with Marnie's wishes there will be no funeral service.

RUSHTON _ Guy George. Born April 4, 1933 at St. Catherine, Ontario. Passed peacefully
after a lengthy illness April 16, 2004. Wife Anita, children, Debbie, Michael, Andrew
and Elizabeth, their mother Mrs. Betty Kofed, stepchildren Randy and Lanita, brother
Deane and eleven grandchildren will miss him dearly. Guy worked for many years for Bell
Telephone then transferred his talents to BCTEL where he was employed as a manager in
Data Services. He retired at age 59 to happily indulge in his love of gardening. Guy
achieved his BA with honours in history in his 60's then set upon fulfilling his desire
to travel. He taught and toured in Southeast Asia for six months then two years later
toured Europe extensively for four months, interspiced with trips to Mexico and USA. Guy
had many friends, was close to his family and was proud of their achievements. During
the last year of his battle with cancer the time and caring of FV Home Support was of
immeasurable assistance and comfort. Especial thank you's to our "Angel On Wheels" nurse
Robyn; also to the other nurses and aides who were so helpful and kind. Robyn gave a hug
a day - and more - which brought rainbows of solace when tears were near. No service by
request. Rather, Guy asked that there be a gathering at his home of friends and family a
month after his passing. This will be held May 15th from 1:00 to 4:00 at 2895 Townline
Rd, Abbotsford. A donation to the Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice would be
appreciated. A fellow of strong political views, Guy created many a chuckle, vigorous
"fireside chats", numerous frowns and made friends in every walk of life. We will miss
"the rants", the kindness, the stimulation and the loyalty of a good man.
