CAULDER _ Marguerite Marie Louise. Died peacefully of complications related to
Alzheimer's Disease, just 10 days before her 89th birthday, on October 20th, 2004, safe
and comfortable under the excellent care of the staff of the Kiwanis Care Lodge in North
Vancouver. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1915 to immigrant parents from Belgium. Her
father, a hard-working man with a skillful trade, made an honest living in the growing
community of Regina. Marguerite, the youngest of 3 children (brother Jules, who never
left Regina, and beloved sister Rosalie, who left Regina early to follow her husband
Clinton, first to India, and then to Windsor, Ontario to live out her life there). Both
passed away, many years ago. Loving mother to her only child, Gordon, whom she and
husband Arthur raised in New Westminster her home city for over 50 years. Marguerite met
Arthur in Vancouver, after moving west in search of postwar opportunity. Arthur, who had
made the same journey west from Regina himself, had recently graduated as a
refrigeration engineer, and, once married, they operated a refrigeration sales and
repair business in New Westminster for several decades, with Marguerite as Arthur's
receptionist, administrator and accountant. A skilled seamstress and hat maker,
Marguerite also kept busy for many years by offering her skills to many regular
customers from New Westminster and surrounding areas. Son Gordon, a Vancouver Chartered
Accountant, moved from New Westminster over 30 years ago, and is today blessed with a
loving family, Sandra, his wife of 26 years, daughter Laura, attending McGill
University, son Graham, attending Concordia University, and daughter Melanie, still at
home. Marguerite never learned to drive a car, but for her this was no handicap. With
Arthur's passing in 1980, she turned to public transportation. She always managed to
travel throughout her community extensively. She was never lonely, even with strangers,
as her friendly and open manner made her always ready with a joke or comment to anybody
she happened by whether that person be a bus driver, a person on a street corner, or a
clerk in a store she always had a pleasant word to say. Human encounters were special to
Marguerite in her world, it wasn't possible to simply pass someone by. So rare these
days. Yet the number of perfect strangers who would respond and engage her in
conversation, often at great length, would tell of the inherent need for this gift in
all of us. Marguerite's unique brand of small-town friendliness, and genuine caring
manner, is a quality of human beings that may be vanishing quickly from our crowded
urban landscape. We fear so, but hope not. A memorial service in celebration of
Marguerite's life will be held at the Robson Manor, 101 3rd St. in New Westminster at
2:00 p.m., Wednesday December 22, 2004, and all who knew her are welcome. Anyone wishing
to contact the family is welcome to do so at Gordon's office: 604-687-5444.

her daughters, Elizabeth Legault and Leslie Arnet; 5 grandchildren and 4
great-grandchildren. Ada worked as a cake decorator for McGavins Bakery before her
marriage. A Memorial Service will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Chapel on December 7,
2004 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, for those wishing, donations in memory to a charity
of choice would be appreciated.
THADDEUS (TED) LAWRENCE CHARNE Q.C. It is with sadness that we announce the accidental
death of our father on Sunday, November 14, 2004 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Dad leaves to
mourn and celebrate his life, his beloved wife Claire, children Theresa (Fred Miller),
Catherine (Larry Sheppard), Thaddeus Jr. (Sheila Frising) and grandchildren, Dustin and
Lauren Sheppard. Dad was predeceased by his father William John Charne in 1971 and
mother Stephanie Gladys Charne in 1994. Born in Winnipeg, Dad spent his youth in
Minnedosa and Winnipeg, Manitoba, as well as Edmonton, Alberta. He graduated from the
University of Alberta, and the Manitoba Law School in 1949. He was a member of the
Manitoba and Canadian Bar Associations and a lecturer for the Law Society of Manitoba's
bar admission course. Dad worked for Arnovitch and Leipsic as a Vice President and
General Counsel, specializing in corporate and real estate law. In 1968 he was appointed
by then Manitoba Attorney-General, Sterling Lyon Queens Counsel on the Honor's List. In
1970 he became Vice-President of St. Maurice Capital Corporation Ltd. and President of
St. Maurice's real-estate development subsidiary, St. Maurice Properties Ltd. In 1971
Dad assisted Commerce Capital Properties Ltd. to develop and manage shopping centers. In
1978 he purchased Commerce Capital Properties Ltd. and renamed the company, now known as
First Commercial Management Inc. He also served as Director and Vice President of Eaton
Bay Financial Services in 1979. Dad was proud of his accomplishment in forming the
largest privately owned commercial property management and development company in
Western Canada. In 2003 Dad sold First Commercial Management Inc. He was still not ready
to retire and had recently reincorporated Commerce Capital Properties Ltd. and
reacquired ownership and management of two shopping centers because he believed that
life was worth living if one had a new challenge to face each day. Dad was a director of
several Canadian corporations and community service organizations. He served on the
church and finance committee of St. Mary's Cathedral. He was a director and member of
the executive committee of the central region of the Canadian Council of Christians and
Jews. He was a charter member and past-president of the Serra Club of Winnipeg as well
as a member of the Winnipeg Knights of Columbus Council 1107. In 1978 he traveled to
Guatemala as part of Omni Child International. Dad had an active interest in the
construction and establishment of St. John Brebeuf Church parish and school. He was an
Honorary Member of the Law Society of Manitoba, a Fifty Year Member of the Winnipeg Real
Estate Board and a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers. Dad was also
an Associate of the Faculty of Management at the University of Manitoba. He was also a
member of the Winnipeg Winter Club and St. Charles Country Club. Dad was devoted to his
family and throughout his life displayed fairness, integrity, vigor, fun, hospitality
and community involvement. Dad's greatest joys involved his family. He enjoyed over
fifty years of marriage with his one true love, Claire. Our happiest memories are of the
love and companionship we shared during numerous vacations and time spent around Dad's
pool house affectionately known as the "Taj Mahal". Dad had many friendships he
treasured, both business and personal. Being an only child he valued all his relatives,
always making an effort to "keep in touch". Dad was a great raconteur with an ability to
tell stories that few could match. His hobbies were work and golf. He spent many hours
perfecting his game on the greens at St. Charles Country Club. He was looking forward to
the coming season and the chance to play pain-free, following his second knee
replacement surgery in September 2004. A funeral service and celebration of Dad's life
will be held at St. John Brebeuf Church, Lanark and Fleet, with the Right Reverend
Monsignor Normand Chartrand, Monsignor Ward Jamison and Father Joseph Johnson S.J.
officiating, on Monday December 6, 2004 at 10:30a.m. Prayers will be held on Sunday
December 5, 2004 at 5:00p.m. at St. John Brebeuf Church. Active Pallbearers will be
Messrs: Darren Bean, Greg Mathews, Dick Ritchie, Peter Sharpe, Laurent Soret, Gerald
Terry, and Blaine Harmen. Honorary Pallbearers will be Messrs: Elmer Bergman, Ted
Lismer, Ross Nugent, Dario Perfumo, Joseph Stangel and Dr. Jim McGoey. Interment to
follow in the family plot at St. Mary's Cemetery. Funeral arrangements in care of Glen
Eden Memorial Gardens Cemetery and Funeral Home. Flowers gratefully declined. Should
friends so desire, contributions can be made to the Concordia Hospital Foundation,
Thaddeus Charne Arthroplasty Research Fund, 1095 Concordia Ave. Winnipeg MB. R2K 3S8.
During the past two years Dad had worked passionately to help create this new foundation
to help others, whose quality of life would be greatly improved by knee or hip
replacement. We love you and will miss you Dad. You will be forever in our hearts!
