sister, Kate (Rome, Italy), brothers, John, Chester and Peter (Poland), wife Eugenia
(Jean) of 58 years, his son Stan, daughter Anne MacLean (Alex) and granddaughters, Shae
and Katie. While serving in the Polish Army as a guard at the Poland/Lithuania border,
Stan was captured by the Russians and transported to a prisoner of war camp in Siberia.
By August of 1941, Russia became an ally and prisoners were released. Food and supplies
continued to be scarce in Russia so the Polish Army was transported to the Middle East
in 1942 to rebuild under British command. In June of 1943, Stan set sail for Scotland
via India and South Africa. In Polmont, Scotland, he continued his training with a
British specialty unit until a parachuting accident forced his transfer to the 1st
Signal Squadron of the 1st Polish Armored Division. With fellow British and Canadian
soldiers, Stan's division landed on the beaches of Normandy, France in June of 1944.
From there they continued onto to Falaise, Caen, Dieppe, Gent, Antwerpen, Tilburg, Breda
and finally, Wilhelmshaven, Germany, the last attack before the end of the War. His unit
took up quarters in Meppen where they liberated two Polish camps. During the liberation
of Meppen Rosa, he met and married his wife, Jean, in February of 1946. In 1947, Stan
and Jean moved to Pontypprid, Wales where he worked in the coal mines until he was able
to immigrate to Canada in 1951. Settling in Toronto, he went to work building the
tunnels for the new subway. Following a long career in the construction industry, Stan
went to work for the Royal Canadian Legion until his retirement. In 1986, Stan and Jean
relocated to Vancouver to enjoy the beauty of the West Coast and their two
granddaughters. Stan dedicated his life to his family and was extremely proud of his war
service. As a long time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Stan would don his legion
uniform and many war medals to proudly march in the Remembrance Day parades. His
children and grandchildren were the apple of his eye. The untimely loss of his only
grandson, Jamie, in 2001 left a very deep scar for Dad. Now they can be together. We
love you Dad and we'll treasure all the memories. Prayers will be offered Tuesday,
December 14, 2004 at 8:00 pm in the Chapel of Kearney Funeral Home, 1096 W. Broadway (at
