Bosence, Richard L.
BOSENCE, Richard L. Passed away peacefully on March 19/05 after a short illness, at the age of ninety four. Predeceased by his mother and father Evelyn and Richard and four sisters Evelyn (Ron) Watkins, Myrtle (Frank) Wratten, Thelma (Ed) Fyfe, and Winnie (Gill) Tuttle. Survived by his sister, Lillian (Harold) Price and many nieces and nephews. Richard, Dick was a true Victoria pioneer, born and raised on the family farm in Gordon Head. After leaving school at an early age, he worked alongside his father at numerous gold mines throughout BC, including Mount Sicker mine just north of Duncan. Dick earned his provincial qualifications as an explosives expert orPowder Man at the age of 19. Later during the Great Depression, he rode the rails for a short time and then returned home to Victoria. Dick continued his career at the Municipality of Saanich until he retired at the age of 60. Retirement allowed Dick to fully enjoy the solitude of his beloved Malahat property. In his earl!
y 80's, chopping wood and drawing water form the well was getting difficult, so he reluctantly moved to his James Bay apartment. He enjoyed traveling to the horse races in Vancouver, and taking long walks around Beacon Hill Park. A service will be held at First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC, on Wednesday, March 30/05, at 2:00 PM. 57665

ERNST, Walter Franz Sunday February 27th, 2005 our beloved husband and father was set free. Walter died peacefully at his Victoria home with his wife Maria Ernst at his side. Predeceased by his beloved Mother, Marianne Ernst and Father, Franz Ernst. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 47 years, Maria Ernst, daughter Andrea Ernst & the Skipper Andreas Artz, daughter Barbara Ernst and his very cherished four grandchildren; Natasha Hart, Sean Hart, Simone Artz, and Tzigane Ernst. In Austria, Walter's sister Marianne Fassell (Josef ) and Gerhard, Renate & Ulie. Cousin Kurt Ernst (Purgi) and Angelica, Bernhard, Rupert, Christof and Magdalen. In Canada, Brother-in-law Rudolph Buschner (Sharon) and Karen, Alexander & Christian. Besides Walter's biological family he leaves behind a large family of close friends, including Andrea and Andre's step-son Joshua Hart. Not to be forgotten is Walter's last dog, Edda. Walter was born on August 16th, 1931, a Sunday morning in Pottendorf, Aus!
tria. His early years were dominated by surviving the ravages of World War II and the care of his Mother Marianne, and sister Marianne while his Father, Franz Ernst was for many years held in a Russian camp. In 1957 he chose to come to Canada in pursuit of adventure and his so loved outdoor landscape. There in Granby Quebec he met Maria Ernst. Together they set off on an adventure of a lifetime. First they settled together in Victoria, BC, and Walter spent many months of the year in the Yukon, eventually creating Yukon Safaris. During the winter months Walter campaigned for the BC Tourism sector and travelled widely giving countless slide shows and lectures. In 1970 Walter and Maria created Copper Bay Lodge on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands). These Copper Bay years were in so many ways the fulfilment of Walter's life. With Maria at his side, Walter welcomed hundreds of guests and gave them an experience they never forgot. Walter was a consummate outdoor man, one of th!
e last of a kind -who live and breathe the natural world. Countless Co
pper Bay Lodge clients will miss him deeply. His family is forever grateful for the; unending love, humour, love of dogs, good food and wine, dancing, story telling and respect for the natural world that he taught us. While we are profoundly sad to lose our Husband, Father, and Grandfather, we are also so grateful that he is now free in Valhalla to walk, hunt and fish, surrounded by old friends and family, who we know received him with hugs and laughter. There is no doubt that Walter's beloved dogs walk closely beside him once again. In Walter's memory we must acknowledge the mysterious cancer Carcinoid. It is the family's deep wish that more attention will be paid by physicians to diagnosing this complex cancer. Respectful thanks must be given to the Victoria Hospice Palliative Response Team and Home Support Group, VI Cancer Clinic, Dr. Buckley, Dr.T. Rosenberg, Dr. K. Yverchuck and Dr.S. Souliere. Also Fern York who came at the right moment of our family's need. Sand's Fun!
eral Services (Quadra St.) are to be thanked for their kind assistance. In keeping with Walter's ways his physical remains followed his often recited poem Robert Services' The Cremation of Sam McGee. At Walter's request there will not be a service, but a celebration of his life will be held on the Haida Gwaii at Copper Bay Lodge on May 21st. A scholarship fund will be established in Walter's name for further education in the conservation of British Columbia's wild salmonoid stock. Please email for further details. To close, Daddy here is one last Robert Service poem for you; The Spell of the Yukon There's a land where the mountains are nameless, And the rivers all run God knows where; There are lives that are erring and nameless, And deaths that just hang by a hair; There are hardship that nobody recons; There are valleys unpeopled and still; There's land oh, it beckons and beckons, And I want to go back and I will. 58057

Hulme, Marion Annie

HULME, Marion Annie (nee MacLeay) Passed away suddenly, peacefully at home, in the early hours of a golden spring morning March 22, 2005. Mom was born in Yorkton, Sask on a cold winter's day Jan 16, 1915, daughter of John and Annie MacLeay (McLeod), and the first little girl in a family of 6 brothers, sons of Annie & Colin MacLeay Donald, Duncan, Colin (Frank), Norman, Allan & Edward, who have all predeceased her. Mom tragically lost her own Mama, Annie, when she was only 8 years old. Mom will always be deeply cherished and missed by her children, Lesley (Steven) Ames and Diane Taylor and by her precious granddaughters Caroline, Christina and Julie Anne. She leaves many loved cousins, nieces, and nephews in the MacLeay and MacLeod clans, and their families. Marion treasured her MacLeod and MacLeay family roots, which have been so carefully researched by Rod MacLeod of Calgary. She was ever so proud of her Scottish Hebridean Isle of Lewis Gaelic heritage. On Aug 22, 1942, Mom!
married our Dad, Gordon, a dashing RCAF Flying Instructor. After WWII, they came to BC, where she was to embark upon a lifetime of being the best homemaker and Mom to her family, and caring for her own dear Papa. Her beloved Gordon passed away so young (54), in 1966, and she resourcefully carried on running his Real Estateinsurance business in Sidney, Gordon Hulme Ltd., until her retirement at age 72. Mom had always excelled at office organization, court reporting, being an RCMP steno, a legal secretary, and newspaper proofreading. Mom continued to read every line in the papers, clipping and filing the good stuff. She had terrific files of jokes & puzzles. She loved to keep track of local history. She amazed us with her stories of her younger years in Saskatchewan, her "Yorkton Yarns", organizing many Yorkton Picnic Reunions in the 1960's and 1970's. Marion was a loyal member of the Monarchist League of Canada. She enjoyed so many happy times with her wide circle of friend!
s, sharing laughter, chats, trips, garage sales, dinners, and tea. Sim
on and Pilot, her special cats, were her beloved and comforting companions. Mom found joy in the natural beauties of our Saanich Peninsula and passed this deep appreciation of nature onto her family. "Oh, it's a wonderful world!" she would exclaim. She greeted each day with joy and enthusiasm, her favourite expression being, "Well, what's on the agenda today? Anything exciting?" Even in her 91st year, she was ready to go for an adventure at the drop of a hat. She was incredulous that she had reached the milestone of 90 years. "Oh, I can't be 90! 1 don't feel THAT OLD I" The family is having a private service this Easter weekend, and a Celebration of Marion's life will be held in late April or early May, 2005. We will announce the date later for you. If you wish, donations in Mom's memory may be made to Mount Newton Center, 2158 Mt. KYLE, Joseph Irvine Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on February 24, 1923, died peacefully at home on March 16, 2005 at the age of 82, following a lengthy struggle with cancer. Joe moved to Saskatchewan in 1930, then to Vancouver in 1940. He married Annette Roberts in 1946, and they moved to Montreal where Joe studied music composition at McGill University. He had a life long love of opera and classical music. Upon returning to Vancouver, he worked as a management consultant and as a producer in the budding movie industry. In 1967, he co-founded and directed Intermedia, an innovative centre for artists exploring new mediums and techniques, with Jack Shadbolt and Victor Doray. During this time, he also acted as a consultant and advisor at Simon Fraser University. From the late sixties to the early seventies, Joe hosted and produced programs for CBC television. After moving to Victoria in 1973, Joe founded The Victoria College of Art in 1976, where he was director and teacher!
until his retirement. He also founded The Victoria College of Art Gallery in 1986. Joe has been an exhibiting artist since 1980. His paintings are represented in collections in Canada, the USA, Japan, Hong Kong, England, Germany and Spain. There is a point where Beauty meets Truth, where Knowledge meets Delight, where Heaven meets Earth. It is to this vision of the Sublime that my painting aspires. His whole life was founded on an untiring search after the truth. Since 1950, Joe had been a devotee of Sri Aurobindo and his spiritual teachings. Joseph is survived by his wife Annette, his six children Alice, Joan, Paul, Sheila, Tom and Kira, 10 grandchildren, and friend Liz Vickers. McCALLION, Audrey Mum was born in Victoria on April 25, 1911. She died March 22, 2005. She was predeceased by her parents, Alfred and Margaret; her half-sister, Gladys, sister, Helen and her husband, Norman, in 2001. She is survived by her son, Keith (Marguerite); granddaughters, Amy and Katharine; cousin, Vivien Wiley and "second son", Jim Wilson of Tsawassen. Mum was a proud, native born Victorian; she began her education at Beacon Hill School, then went to South Park Elementary and attended Victoria High School. She never graduated, having to go to work during the Great Depression. She began her working life at Spencer's on Government Street in 1929, continued working there during the 1930's and in 1943 met and married Norman when he was stationed at Pat Bay with the RCAF. After World War II, the couple moved to Edmonton where Keith was born in 1947. The family returned to Victoria in 1948. In 1962 Mum returned to work for the Income Tax Department (now Revenue Canada) an!
d in 1964, she joined the Correspondence Branch of the B.C. Ministry of Education, where she worked until her retirement. During her working career, she made many great friends whom she valued all of her life. Growing up in Victoria, she began a lifelong love of sports; she swam in the Gorge and off Dallas Road, close to her home. She began playing tennis in her early teens at the James Bay Athletic Association and she and Miss Wiley were the JBAA Women's Doubles Champions in 1931; Mum was also the Women's Singles Champion that year. She was a superb basketball guard and played top flight senior women's basketball in 1930's Victoria for The Red Birds, Dad's Cookies and Blue Ribbons. Mum was very proud to be selected to the Victoria team that played the Edmonton Grads on their visit to the city in 1935. She, along with teammates, Berta and Mary Peden, Lou Spark and Ruby Bethell played the reigning Women's World Champions to a standstill in the first half. She also loved base!
ball and attended many games at the Old Royal Athletic Park to watch t
he Victoria Tyees and Athletics of the Pacific Coast League. After the B.C. Lions joined the Canadian Football League in 1954 Mum became a football fan; she purchased season's tickets to the Lion's home games in 1963 when they were brought into the Royal Theatre by cablevision, then in its infancy. She learned how to drive at age 50, a good idea because in retirement Audrey and Norm loved to travel, going back to Winnipeg, Up-Island and ultimately to Arizona and Nevada for many enjoyable holidays. She joined with friends and visited Europe, enjoying Spain, Italy and England. She went on her first Alaskan Cruise at age 91, and went again the next year thanks to her great friends and travelling companions, Nora Hynes and Dawna Milkowski. Our family would especially like to thank Dr. Arthur Macgregor and his staff members, Margaret Huxtable and Sheila Dryden for the wonderful care and attention they provided to her. We also want to thank the exceptional women of the Victoria He!
alth Unit whose care, compassion and skills provided Mum with a degree of care that can only be described as exceptional. We want to thank, particularly, Home Care Nurse RN Shirley Nixon for her incredible help, concern, advice and advocacy for Mum. It is truly appreciated. Finally, to each and every resident of Mum's condominium building, a heartfelt thank you. You gave her the care and support she needed to live alone after Dad's death and for that we are so very grateful. No funeral by request; donations to the Victoria Hospice Society, 1952 Bay Street, Victoria, B.C. V8R 1J8 would be most appreciated. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.
