McKenzie, Lloyd George
McKENZIE Hon. Lloyd George, Q.C., was born August 20, 1918, died October 29,
2005, at Lion's Gate Hospital, North Vancouver, after suffering a stroke. He
was born in Penticton, B.C., moved to Victoria with his family at age 10
when his father became Minister of Mines and Labour in the Tolmie
Administration, and except while on military service and at law school lived
there for 46 years. After two years at Victoria College, he enlisted in the
Westminster Regiment and married Betty (nee Maharey) before leaving for
Europe, where he served as an infantry officer throughout the Italian
campaign. On his return, in 1945, he enrolled in the first class at the UBC
Faculty of Law, of which he became class President, articled to J. Howard
Harman, Q.C., and thereafter practised for 26 years with the Harman firm. He
was President of the Victoria Bar, a Bencher of the Law Society of B.C. and
for 19 years a Governor of the University of Victoria, including a term as
Chairman. He had a widely-varied practice, appearing for the Crown or
accused in numerous criminal prosecutions and acting for the Province in
notable civil suits, including the B.C. Electric takeover litigation and
several major taxation cases, before being appointed in 1974 to the B.C.
Supreme Court, which required that he move to Vancouver. During 1977-78 he
was Chairman of the Royal Commission on the B.C. Railway. After retirement
from the bench, in 1993, he acted for 10 years as Information Officer for
the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, a position without precedent in which
he dealt daily with the media, often on important issues about which sitting
judges cannot speak. He is survived by Betty, his treasured companion for
more than 60 years; also by Anthony McKenzie, nephew, Barbara (Mark)
Pimlott, cousin, and extended family: Frank and Patricia Smith, Andrea
Smith, Clyde (Linda) Smith, Kathleen (Lyn) Brooks and Frances (Ian) Murray.

Muir, Dollie May Wong
Photo
MUIR, Dollie May Wong Peacefully, at her home in Victoria, British Columbia
on October 28, 2005, after a six-month struggle with cancer. Dollie was born
in Herbert, Saskatchewan on December 11, 1944 to the late Wong and May Gin.
She is survived by her husband, William; brother-in-law James (Margaret) of
Toronto; stepdaughter Claire (Mark Huisman) and stepson Alastair of Toronto;
sister Joeline (Sammy) Shong of Victoria; and five brothers: Sueloge
(Elaine) Gin, Ken Gin, and Henry Gin, all of Herbert, Saskatchewan; King
(Gayle, deceased) Gin of Gull Lake, Saskatchewan; and Dan (Julie) Thom of
Akron, Ohio. She will be sadly missed by her many nieces, nephews,
great-nieces, and greatnephews. Dollie attended schools in Herbert and
Victoria, and studied at the Universities of Regina and Saskatchewan. She
retired from teaching English as a Second Language at the University of
Regina in 1997 to come to Victoria. Earlier she had worked in credit
reporting in Regina. Among her activities there were Credit Women
International and the University Women's Club. She did extensive volunteer
work in adult literacy, for which she received an award from the Regina
Public Library. Travel was one of Dollie's pleasures, and she had fond
memories of wine country tours in Oregon, California, and the Okanagan,
extensive trips to Europe and Asia, and of winter months spent in Mexico.
She enjoyed physical activities such as early morning jogging, scuba diving,
and pumping iron with the Gym Goons at Planet Fitness. Among the groups in
Victoria that will miss Dollie's contributions are the Hillside Mall Walkers
Club, the Oak Bay Tea Party, and the Saanich Sommeliers winemaking club.
Moving to Victoria presented a challenge that she revelled in: designing a
house and a garden that would end up on the cover of Gardens West. One of
the bitterest blows that cancer dealt her was preventing her from passing
the final test that would have qualified her for membership in the British
Columbia Guild of Wine Judges. A celebration of Dollie's life will be held
on Sunday, December 4, 2005 starting at 2:00 p.m. at the Horseshoe Club of
Victoria at 620 Kenneth. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the
Victoria Hospice, whose compassionate and professional care helped ease
Dollie's way along her difficult voyage. 169827
