Marsden, George
Photo
MARSDEN, George Frederick We are sad to announce the death on Christmas day
of George Marsden, dearly loved husband of Penny, father of Nicholas
(Marilyn) and Veronica (Art), grandfather of Jane, Erica, Patrick, Anne and
Andrew. George was born in London England on January 12, 1910. He moved to
Victoria with Penny and three year old Nicholas in 1950. He worked in the
purchasing department at Yarrows Shipyard until age 64 then decided to audit
courses at the University of Victoria, something that he did for 25 years,
joined by Penny on her retirement. Of this time he said "It was the happiest
period of my life. I felt completely at home at the university." He enjoyed
the formation of the University Foreign Film Club over 40 years ago, whose
members continue to meet socially on a fairly regular basis. And from the
1960's to very recently, he was a regular member of the Coffee Klatch at the
Blethering Place a morning coffee date that he always looked forward to. In
1994 he and Penny moved to The Orchard, a seniors' residence in Cadboro Bay
associated with St. George's Church. They did this on the spur of the moment
because they "liked the location", and never regretted that decision. With
the company of the residents and support from the parish, they found it a
congenial and happy place. The highlight of his week was breakfast on Sunday
with Nicholas and his family, a routine that was established over 25 years
ago and rarely broken. He cherished his regular visits from the rest of the
family back east, including cousins Fleur and Theresa. He recently said "I
am part of a happy, devoted, and united family." In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to the Department of Greek & Roman Studies, University
of Victoria, P.O. Box 3060, Victoria, BC, V8W 3R4. Or, you may give to a
charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on
Tuesday, January 3 at St. George the Martyr Anglican Church, 3909 St.
George's Lane. Reception will be at the church hall next door. 189736
