Bruce, Margaret Beresford
BRUCE, Margaret Beresford (nee Gower) Passed away peacefully on January 12,
2006. She was born in Victoria on June 30, 1914. She is survived by her
sister Joan Gillatt; two daughters, Barbara (Erik) Henriksen and Cathy
(Andrew) Macauley; five grandchildren Jenny, Jimmy, Stephanie, Caroline, and
Alex; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband
Alex; and two brothers Elvin and Jack. Many thanks to Rev. Ron Bjorgan, Dr.
Byron Heal, and the staff at Oak Bay Lodge for their care and support. A
Memorial Service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 1273 Fort Street on
Saturday, January 21st at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a

DAWSON, Eric J. (Derry), Captain (R.C.N. Retired) P. Eng. Died peacefully
with his family at his side, in Victoria, January 15, 2006 at the age of
eighty. Born in Nelson, B.C. November 10, 1925. Graduated Royal Naval
College (Royal Roads) (1945), Greenwich Naval College (1952), and National
Defense College (1971). Retired in Victoria (1974) after a thirty year
career including design, repair and refit of and service in many HMCS
vessels. Survived by Thelma, his loving wife of 55 years, daughters Julie
and Catherine, sons Eric (Shelly) and Peter, grandchildren Micheal, Jenna
and Sophie and his sister Sheila Candy (Peter). A loving father, a gentle
man, a lover of photography, fishing in Kootenay Lake, early morning walks
and sunsets at the ocean side. Predeceased by parents Judge Eric P. and Ella
Dawson and brother William. Memorial Service 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 21,
St. Paul's Anglican Church, 1379 Esquimalt Road, Esquimalt, B.C. Reception

FOSTER, Eleanor May (Vantreight) Passed away peacefully, surrounded by her
family, on January 13, 2006 at Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Eleanor was born
in Victoria on May 06, 1918 to Saanich pioneer's Jean and Sydney Vantreight.
Predeceased by her loving husband Maurice in 1968, and her three brothers,
Gerald, Robert and Donald Vantreight. Survived by her loving children, six
daughters and one son, Ruth (Frank) Copley, Agassiz B.C., Jeanie (Rob)
Copley, Maureen (Marty) Martyn, Victoria B.C., David Foster, Los Angeles CA,
Marylou (Ian) Eales, Woodland Hills CA, Barbara Foster, Vancouver B.C.,
Colleen Jaymes Foster, Los Angeles CA. Fourteen grandchildren, Frank (Nancy)
Copley, Maureen Lomax, Jim Lomax, Tanya (Kirk) Jensen, Darren (Claudia)
Copley, Lane (Gillian) Copley, Janel (Brad) Copley-Mellafont, Amy (Simon)
Gillies, Sara, Erin and Jordan Foster, Allison (Brent) Jones, Kyle (Nhu)
Formo, and stepgrandchildren Brandon and Brody Jenner. Also fourteen
great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored. Eleanor also leaves her
sisters-in-law Dorothy "Russy" Foster and Ella Foster, several nieces,
nephews and many dear friends. Eleanor was a loving mother, Grammy and G.G.
who loved life, and lived it to the fullest. If she was not playing cards or
bingo with her many friends, she was off traveling the world to some
exciting social event with her family. Mum did it "her way", living in her
own home, and still driving her car. Good for you mum!! You will be greatly
missed by all. The family wishes to give special thanks to Dr. Amanda
Naismith for her compassion and wonderful care. Thanks also to the nurses
and staff at Saanich Peninsula Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital who took
care of her and also became her friend over the past several years. A
celebration of Eleanor's life will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at
3 p.m. at North Douglas Pentecostal Church, 675 Jolly Place, Victoria, B.C.

HAUPTFLEISCH, Margaret (Ruth) Born September 26, 1917 and passed away
peacefully at James Bay Lodge on January 6, 2006. Daughter of Mildred and
John Austin, granddaughter of Mrs. and Rev. Arthur deB. Owen, rector of the
Church of Our Lord and beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend. A tiny
woman with a big heart. Survived and loved by daughter, Lee Taylor (Neil) of
Ontario; brother Ray Hughes of Victoria; brother William (Edna) Austin and
family of Victoria, Gallivan family of Saskatchewan; Becker family of
Manitoba; Nesta Primeau and family of B.C., and various family members in
the U.S. She will be missed by dear friend Joan Smith of Victoria, and many
others. Predeceased by husband, William Hauptfleisch in 1966; son Robert
Owen Hauptfleisch in 1996; brother Eldie Hughes in childhood; brother Alfred
Hughes in 1989; and Georgina and Howard Gallivan in 1994. A memorial service
will be held at McCALL BROS. FAMILY CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets on

Kerr, Roy
KERR, Roy Rayner It is with sadness the family wishes to announce the sudden
passing of Roy Rayner Kerr at the Lodge at Broadmead, Victoria, BC on
January 12, 2006. Roy was born August 13, 1926 in Smithers, BC. Predeceased
by his first wife, Nancy in 1978. He is survived by his loving wife of 34
years, Hilda; and three children, Suzanne (Mike) of Maple Ridge, Debi
(Dewis) of Victoria and Richard (Ann) of Penticton; one granddaughter and
six grandsons. He is also remembered by his loving sister, Edna; niece,
nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Roy was a member of the Canadian
Merchant Marines during World War II and an active member of the Royal
Canadian Legion Public Service Branch #127. For many years, Roy was an
owner/operator of Bluebird Cabs of Victoria and was active in the bowling
community and inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame. The family wishes to
thank the staff at the Lodge at Broadmead for Dad's care over the past

KERRIDGE-SEWELL, Jean Passed away peacefully on January 16th 2006. A loving
mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she will be greatly missed by her

Lindberg, Maja Kongensgaard
LINDBERG, Maja Kongensgaard Maja succumbed to cancer January 2, 2005 after a
short illness. Leaving to mourn her passing is her husband of almost 41
years, Erik Lindberg. Also grieving are her children Gitte (Vince) and Erik
Jr. and two granddaughters, Leah and Erika, all of Victoria. Maja also
leaves three brothers, Vagn (Lise) of Abbotsford, Borge (Inge) of
Copenhagen, DK and Hans of Holsterbro, DK; and her extended family of foster
children, Jennifer (Lawrence), Chad, and Justin. Maja was born July 12, 1934
in Hurup, Denmark. She was an RN in Denmark and Canada. She enjoyed camping,
dancing, needlecrafts and keeping in touch with her large circle of friends
and acquaintances worldwide. Her vitality will be missed by all. There will

Mahon, Elsie
MAHON, Elsie May (nee Hunter) Born London, England April 20, 1910. Passed
away peacefully January 13, 2006 at Saanich Peninsula Extended Care
Hospital. Predeceased by her husband Charles Henry Mahon. Mum will be
lovingly remembered by her daughters, Joy (Tom) Scott, and Marjorie
Pettigrew; sons, Charles (Joanne) Mahon and Dennis (Sharon) Mahon as well as
many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Mum
went with her parents to Shanghai, China at the age of nine and lived there
for 27 years during which time she got married. She came to Canada with her
husband and family in 1946. Mum spent many happy years with Sidney Silver
Threads and her many accomplishments also included acting as the "Gran" in
the CHEK TV's series "Time Exposures." The family would like to thank the
doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers at Saanich Peninsula Extended Care II
for their kindness and compassionate care extended to our mum. No service by

MAVRIKOS, John 1913 2006 John, our beloved father, grandfather and great
grandfather passed away unexpectedly on January 15, 2006. He was born on
Skyros Island, Greece on February 10, 1913. He is predeceased by his wife,
Ria. He is survived by his four children, Pitsa (Miltos), Dimitri
(Katerina), Steven (Christina), George (Debora) and his fourteen cherished
grandchildren and two adored great grandchildren . Papa John" will be
remembered for his love of family, singing, dancing and the writing of his
wonderful poems. Prayers and viewing will be held on Wednesday, January 18,

will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2006 at 11:00 am at the Greek Orthodox

MILLER, Edward Lee Ed passed away peacefully on January 15th, 2006 at
Arranglen Nursing Home, Qualicum Beach at the age of 78 years from Kidney
cancer, complicated by his existing disease of Dementia. He is predeceased
by his loving wife of 40 years, Nancy in 2003 and his son Sandy in 2000. He
is survived by his daughter Mary (Morag) Mason (Shane), grandchildren
Crystal and Anthony and great grandson Christopher. Also survived by his
sister Helen Lach (George) and brother Fred, as well as many nieces and
nephews. Ed will also be sadly missed by his sister in law Mary Mckay in
Scotland. Ed worked for BC Electric and BC Hydro for over 40 years and
retired in 1984. Over the years Ed's hobbies went from raising birds in his
backyard Avery to his love of gardening. The family would like to express
their extreme gratitude to all of the staff for their loving care and
devotion to his comfort while at Arranglen Garden Nursing Home. Funeral
service will be held at Yates Funeral Service & Crematorium on Saturday,

O'DELL, Ricki Len October 26, 1948 January 15, 2006 Ricki Len O'Dell passed
away at home on January 15, 2006 surrounded by his loving partner, family
and friends. Rick was born in Ephrata, Washington, USA. He attended school
until 3rd grade in Washington and then 4th-7th grade at Langford Elementary,
finishing 8th-12th grade with the honor of Valedictorian at Belmont Jr. &
Sr. High, Langford BC. Rick was also awarded honors for sports such as
football and hockey and he continued his love of playing the saxophone even
after he finished school. Rick was well known for his many racing
accomplishments starting with rookie of the year for VARA in 1966, he won
most popular driver award four years in a row 1970-1973. He raced Stock,
Super Stock, Figure 8 and NASCAR, competing at Western Speedway in Victoria
as well as traveling to various tracks in the Pacific Northwest. Racing
seemed to be a natural progression as his father "Digger" led the way into
the VARA Hall Of Fame in 1968. Rick was also inducted in 1997 making them
the first Father & Son to both receive this honor. The cars Rick drove were
always first class in appearance and performance to which he received
numerous awards . . . his number was 18. Rick valued his friends,
colleagues, and every phase of his working career. He owned and operated a
number of businesses but building the O'Dell Slinger Service was one of his
most challenging and rewarding experiences. He taught the guys in his
company to live and act with the consideration of others in the forefront of
their thoughts. His philosophy for conducting himself and his business with
honesty, integrity and good nature earned the deepest respect of the
numerous fans, friends, business associates, and family. His love, guidance,
support and sense of humor will be missed by all of us, but we know he will
live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. The family is very
grateful for the loving care he received over the last couple of months by
Donna, his special partner and Denise, his sister. He is survived by his
special partner Donna Rand, father & stepmother "Digger " Len & Audrey
O'Dell, stepfather Harold McKim, sister Denise Briggs (Steve), sister Linda
Fox (Herman), special friends Jennifer Smith, Russ & Rachel Frawley and the
crew from O'Dell Slinger Service. He was predeceased by his mother Marion
McKim, sister Ginger Hutchins, grandmother Alma Mawson, and grandmother &
grandfather AI & Alta Winkle. A Celebration of Rick's life will take place
at Gateway Baptist Church, 898 Royal Oak Dr. on Saturday, January 21 at

PARKIN, Robert E. July 20, 1927 January 17, 2006 Predeceased by his wife
Adrianna (Feb. 25, 2004). Lovingly remembered by his children Diane (Barry)
Alldred; Rob (Mary) Parkin; David (Bev) Parkin and Jennifer Turner; many
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also missing him is Tyson, his dog
and faithful friend. Born in Victoria, BC, Robert was a long time resident
of Duncan, BC. Bob cooked at Leechtown and Honeymoon Bay Lumber Mill, then
became a welder for many years. Once the mill was closed, Bob was sent to
New Zealand to help reassemble the mill. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Bob
was a quiet family man. A Celebration of Life will be held at Barry and

READ, Joyce Lucy (Abbott) February 12, 1924 to January 17, 2006 A war bride
passes. Mum died quietly in the morning at the Victoria Hospice, surrounded
by her family. Predeceased by her granddaughters Claire and Kate Minkley,
she is survived by Richard (Dick), her husband of 60 years, her three
children, Melinda (John) Minkley, Chris (Tracey) Read, Paul (Noel) Read and
two grandchildren, Travis and Lucy. Born in Esher England, the only child of
Lucy (Catchpole) and William Abbott, mum grew up in a large Victorian
mansion in Molesey that had been converted into a Sports Club for the
Distiller's Corp and managed by her parents. She worked at a tank turret
factory during the war, met and in 1945 married, her Canadian soldier. In
1953 mum and dad moved back to Saskatchewan and then to North Vancouver. In
1982, they moved to Nanaimo and in the last 5 years enjoyed life in the Cook
Street Village. In Vancouver, mum worked for Deeler's Antiques and Birk's
and developed considerable knowledge of antiques and china. Mum was an
intelligent and vibrant woman, interested in all the issues of life and
loved to feed her family and friends. Keeping dad fed was a full time
occupation. Mum was very accepting of people and always looked for the good
in them. She was an involved and compassionate granny. Her great love the
last few years was her painting, particularly water colours. Paintings of
flowers and scenery grace the walls of family and friends. She always wished
that she had spent less time on housework and more time on painting. Mum was
a member of St John the Divine Church and she wished her ashes to be
interred next to her granddaughter Claire in the memorial garden next to the
church. A service followed by reception will be held at St John's, 1611
Quadra Street, Victoria on Monday January 23, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of
flowers donations may be made to St John's, Victoria Hospice or to the
Claire Minkley scholarship at Oak Bay High School. Into God's Hands. 196583

RILEY, Amy Passed away peacefully in High Prairie on December 13, 2005 at
the age of 87 years. Predeceased by her husband in 1968 and left to cherish
her memory are her children Terry Riley (Florence) of Victoria, Colin Riley
(Beverly) of Red Earth, Joyce McKay, Lynda Krochak (Thomas) of Camrose,
Michelle Lindberg (Rodney) of Stony Plain, numerous grandchildren and great
grandchildren. Amy liked to give to her community as an active volunteer,
foster parent and donated her time and talents to many organizations. She

RITTENHOUSE, Dorothy May (nee Wills) Died Friday, January 13, after a long
decline, age 91, in Victoria BC. Predeceased by husband Wm. Paul in 1971,
son Denis Paul in 1962. Survived by son Larry and his wife Pauline and by
grandson David and fiancee Ellen, all of Victoria. Dorothy taught for 21
years in Grantham and Jordan Station, Louth, Ontario schools. Member
Vineland United Church since 1936 until moving to Victoria in 1998. Our
thanks to the staff and managers of Central Park Lodge Glenwarren and to Dr.
Brook, Oak Bay. Cremation has occurred. There will be a graveside ceremony
and celebration of life in Vineland, Ontario, to be announced. 195912

Specht, Pauline
SPECHT, Pauline (nee Krilow) born in Rabbit Lake, Saskatchewan, on September
28, 1927 and passed into the presence of God at Royal Jubilee Hospital in
the Hospice Unit on January 16, 2006, surrounded by her loving husband Ted,
daughters Gloria Davenport (David), Kathryn Simonson (Bernie), Frances
Zaseybida (Greg) & sons Richard Specht (Cheryl) and Murray Brown (Peggy),
many grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a great grandchild on the way.
Also survived by her sister, Ann Jackson and brother, Bill Krilow. Pauline
grew up in Vernon, and moved to Victoria as a young woman, where she
reconnected with and married Ted. Pauline loved to garden, bowl and teach
her daughters and granddaughters of the Ukrainian traditions in the kitchen.
Mom was an active member of the St. Saviours Ladies Guild up to a few years
ago. As a mother, she loved to cheer on her son when he played baseball as a
youth, and continued the tradition as a grandmother by cheering on and
watching her grandsons play. Mom had a genuine love for sports and
encouraged all the young players. She was a people person and enjoyed
working and volunteering with the public. She had a warm heart, generous
spirit and outgoing personality. Pauline's family would like to extend
heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Ranald Donaldson, Dr. Buckley and the caring
staff and volunteers at Hospice. Memorial services will be held at St.
Saviours Anglican Church, 310 Henry St., Victoria, B.C. Friday, January 20th
at 11:00am. The Reverend Antonio Osorio and The Reverend Betty J. Miller
officiating. As per Pauline's wishes, donations to The Greater Victoria
Hospice Society or St. Saviours Anglican Church Outreach Program for Women
in Need, would be greatly appreciated in lieu of flowers. Arrangements by

WALLACE, Lawrence James Passed away peacefully in Victoria on January 12,
2006. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Lois, after 63
years of marriage, and is lovingly remembered by his three adoring
daughters, Marilyn, Jill and Wendy, his son-inlaw, Jack MacDonald, his
treasured grandchildren, Alison Noordmans (Craig), Matthew McCurrach, Andrew
and Geoffrey MacDonald and Lindsay Nielsen, many nieces and nephews and
their families. He will be fondly remembered by many former students and
colleagues. Lawrie was born on April 24, 1913 at William Head, the youngest
of four children of Mary (Parker), a member of a pioneer family in
Metchosin, and John Wallace. The family moved into Victoria in 1916, and the
four children took turns supporting each other, to ensure that they all
completed university. All four went on to become respected educators and
outstanding members of their communities. Lawrie was predeceased by his
brothers, Bob and Jack, and his sister Mary (Mamie) Gray. Lawrie's teaching
career began in Alberni and Duncan, and was interrupted by his Navy service
in the North Atlantic and Caribbean during World War II. After the war, he
completed his M.Ed. from the University of Washington and joined the staff
at Victoria High School, where he taught mathematics, was a counselor and
coached basketball. He always cherished this time in his career and made
many lifelong friends amongst his colleagues and students. In 1953, Lawrie
joined the provincial government, serving as Deputy Provincial Secretary
from 1959 to 1977. Between 1969 and 1977, he also served as Deputy Minister
to the Premier. From 1977 until 1980, Lawrie was British Columbia's Agent
General for the United Kingdom and Europe, returning from London to serve
once again as Deputy Minister to the Premier. Both before and after
retirement, Lawrie dedicated countless hours to community service, and
involved himself deeply with many local and provincial organizations. During
his public service career, he became known as Mr. Centennial" for his
leadership of four centennial celebrations, in 1958, 1966, 1967 and 1971.
Throughout his life he was an elder and trustee of First United Church, now
First Metropolitan United Church. He was particularly proud of being a
charter member of the Camosun Gyro Club and his role in creating the
Victoria High School Alumni Association. In recognition of his devoted
service, Lawrie was made an honourary life member of many of the
organizations in which he was involved. Among many other honours and awards,
Lawrie was named to the Order of Canada in 1971 and the Order of British
Columbia in 1990. He was awarded honourary degrees by the University of
British Columbia in 1978 and by Royal Roads Military College in 1994. Lawrie
dedicated his life to serving his community, province and country. He valued
his students, friends and colleagues, and relished every phase of his
working career and volunteer activities, especially when confronted with
challenges. Notwithstanding his busy life, his family was always the centre
of his existence. He was devoted to us, our home and his beautiful garden.
His love, good nature, support, tolerance, guidance, integrity and sense of
humour will be deeply missed by all of us, but we know he will live on in
the hearts of all who knew and loved him. The family is very grateful for
the loving care he received over the past several months at the Royal
Jubilee Hospital's Transitional Care Unit and Mount St. Mary's Hospital. A
Service of Remembrance will be conducted by the Reverend A. Saunders at
First Metropolitan United Church, Quadra and Balmoral Streets on Saturday,
January 21, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to

Williams, Keith
WILLIAMS, Keith Roland Keith passed away peacefully at home on January 15,
2006 after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be deeply missed by his
loving wife, Beryl, sons David and Peter (Rita) and daughter Candy (Terry)
and grandchildren Ashley, Natasha, Matthew, and Michael. He was born in
Wales in 1923, the youngest of seven. He served in the RAF during WWII, then
with the RCAF until retirement after a total of 30 years of military
service. He worked another 20 years with the Public Service in Lahr,
Germany. Coming to Victoria in 1989 he considered this his home. A funeral
service will be held at St. Luke's Anglican Church at Cedar Hill Cross Roads
at 1:30 pm on Friday, January 20, 2006. We would like to give special thanks
to the Home Care Nurses who provided wonderful care. In lieu of flowers
