Gibbins, William Edward "Ted"
Photo
GIBBINS, William Edward (Ted) November 6, 1919 January 22, 2006 Dad was born
in Chelsea, England, the youngest of eight brothers and sisters. At the age
of six, following the death of his father, Dad and three of his older
brothers and sisters, together with their mother, emigrated to Canada and
settled in Prince George. He completed school there, and then returned to
England shortly before the start of World War II to join the British Regular
Army. Dad was sent out to India after training and served there and in Burma
at various times as both an Artillery Officer and Infantry Officer. During
the fighting in Burma, Dad was awarded the Military Cross for bravery. He
later received a serious leg wound while fighting near Kohima, and finished
the war as a Captain in the Army Intelligence Service in India. Eight years
after leaving home, Dad returned to Canada to marry his high school
sweetheart, Eleanor. They settled originally in Vancouver, and as the family
grew, moved to a new home in North Vancouver. Dad and Mum would have
celebrated their sixtieth anniversary this year. He will be sadly missed by
her, their two daughters Judy (Al) Grimes and Barb (Larry) Schwitek in
Kamloops, sons Ron (Judy) in Victoria, and Bob in North Vancouver, as well
as four grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason) Turner, Sarah Gibbins and Jessica
and Kyle Schwitek, and by his surviving brother George (Frankie). He is also
survived by several nieces and nephews in Canada and England. The family
would like to thank BC Ambulance, Dr. John Lebrun, and especially the
Palliative Care Team at Lions Gate Hospital for their care and support in
making Dad's difficult last few weeks as comfortable as possible both for
him and for the rest of the family. We would also like to thank the Burma
Star Association Chapters in Vancouver and Victoria for the companionship
and camaraderie given to both Dad and Mum over the past several years.
Funeral services for Dad will be held at 2:00 on Thursday, January 26 at the
Boal Chapel at 1505 Lillooet Road in North Vancouver. In lieu of flowers,
those wishing to commemorate Dad's life are asked to donate to the

Naylor, Bernice

NAYLOR, Bernice Joan (nee Mullen) known to many as Bunny", passed away
peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital on January 21, 2006 after a brief illness.
Survived by Donald, her loving husband of 54 years; daughters Janet (Doug),
Barbara (Ian), and Leslie (Ken), son Gordon (Barbara), grandchildren Thomas,
Paul, Keri, Colleen, Christopher, Tara, Stephen, Sarah, and Paulina, and
brother Bud (Helen). Born November 27, 1928 in Nanaimo, she spent her
childhood years in Ladysmith, then moved with her family to Victoria where
she finished high school and met her future husband. She married in 1951 and
then moved to North Vancouver where she remained (apart from a 10-year
sojourn in Ontario) ever since. Bernice was an avid photographer from an
early age, and faithfully recorded her life and travels on film. She also
loved to read, often devouring books within a few hours of starting them,
and always enjoyed a good word puzzle. While raising her family, she found
the time to curl competitively at the North Shore Winter Club, and
participate actively in the Girl Guides of Canada as a Guide leader and
Provincial camp commissioner. In later years, she liked nothing better than
to get away with her husband, whether it be hiking or camping in a favourite
spot, golfing, exploring a new area, taking a winter getaway, travelling
abroad, or visiting family members in the BC interior and Vancouver Island.
She will be fondly remembered by friends and family as someone who was
generous, kind, unfailingly upbeat, extremely resourceful, and always
eventempered. There will be a celebration of her life at 2:00pm Friday,

she returned to London where she started to train as a social worker but
left the school to join the war effort as an ambulance driver with the
American Ambulance Corps. It was during the London Blitz that she met Rocky.
They were married in 1942 in Dublin and came to Canada, where they lived in
Vernon and then in Vancouver and Victoria. When the children were all in
school, Elizabeth wanted to do volunteer social work, but instead was hired
by Family and Children's Services and later employed by the Ministry of
Human Resources as a social worker specializing in adoptions. She was the
centre of the family's activities, and welcomed many into her home,
including her son's rugby and soccer teams, her daughters' choirs, and
sailing guests from around the world. She loved travelling, gardening and
her cairn terriers. Her love of sewing led her to make costumes for the
Victoria Gilbert & Sullivan Society for which she was made an honourary life
member. Elizabeth enjoyed going to the symphony and the opera, and with

missed by all. The funeral will take place at 2:00 pm, Thursday, January 26

Witwicki, Anthony "Tony"
WITWICKI, Anthony Nicholas Tony" October 12, 1927 January 22, 2006 In the
early morning hours, Tony took his final turn on the dance floor and
peacefully sailed away at Glengarry Hospital. He was a loving Partner,
amazing Dad, terrific Grandpa and enthusiastic Great Grandpa. Tony was born
in Bield, Manitoba and was a plow jockey" on the family farm until he joined
the Royal Canadian Navy in 1946. He saw the world from naval ships, H.M.C.S.
Athabaska, Sault Ste. Marie, Crescent and Canada's largest aircraft carrier
Bonaventure, until his retirement in 1964. One of Tony's proudest memories
was saving an entire crew while serving on H.M.C.S. Sault Ste. Marie during
a typhoon in August 1952. Subsequently, he was promoted to CPO 2nd Class.
Tony began a new career with the B.C. Civil Service until his retirement in
1978. Retirement opened a new volume of learning for Tony. He spent many
years auditing courses at UVic, and was stimulated by the freedom of
knowledge. Although he never earned a degree, he was thrilled when he was
invited to join the Faculty Club. There began a new tradition in Tony's
life. He spent the last 5 years of his life going daily to his club" for
lunch, keeping up on current events and changing world views. He especially
enjoyed the stimulating discussions regarding Hockey and Baseball. Tony was
a big fan of Hockey and cheered on the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple
Leafs. His favourite players were Maurice The Rocket" Richard and Bobby Orr,
among a list of favourites. He inspired lifelong learning in all he met, and
was quick to smile and laugh with family and strangers alike. Tony gave us a
love of the outdoors through many years of hiking and camping on Vancouver
Island. You are welcome to sit on Tony's bench in Beacon Hill Park and enjoy
the ships and mountains. Look for the bench reading Tony Witwicki, a Prairie
Sailor". Tony also helped create the cement sea creatures at Cadboro Bay
Park with the Chamber Of Commerce in the 1950's. Tony gave generously to
others throughout his life, including 27 years of donating blood to the
Canadian Red Cross, and donating hundreds of books along with his fine
telescope to UVic. Tony is predeceased by his brothers Angus, Joe, Metro,
Pete and John, sisters Anne, Nell, Margaret, and Mary. He is survived by his
brother Stan, sisters Teenie, Helen, and Marjorie, loving longtime partner
Ursala Taylor, former wife Mary (also known as Betty) and his three
children, Shirley (Larry) of Victoria, Cynthia (Bruce) of Mill Valley, CA.,
Michael (Anne) of Airdrie, AB, and 6 wonderful grandchildren, all of whom
Tony referred to as his lighthouses"; Christopher (Melissa) of Milwaukee,
WI, Michelle (Paul), Denise (Justin), Laura (Perry) all of Victoria, Kelly
and Ryan of Mill Valley, CA., and one inspiring great granddaughter, Tony's
