Bradshaw, Norene
Photo
BRADSHAW, Norene Wilma Flamingo" Born in Victoria on September 29, 1946,
Norene passed away peacefully at home after a long and courageous battle
with cancer. Wife, mother, grandmother, and a dear friend to many in her
life, she will be sorely missed, but her spirit will live on in all she
touched. Norene sought out ways to lend a helping hand and jumped at the
chance to organize an event or be of service. Her life was filled with
events and commitments, friends and family. Nearly every holiday was spent
with her two sisters and other family, and she was always willing to add an
extra chair or two at gatherings to include those who might need a temporary
family. Norene is predeceased by her parents, Ora and Jim, by her
step-father Clive, and by her dear Auntie Jennie. She is survived by her
husband Jim Blazina, her daughters Alice (Brandon) Hawes, and Heather (Mike)
Alsop, her precious grand-children Alana, Evelyn, Zachary, Alex, and Trevor,
her sisters Nelda (Brian) Turner and Ruth (Len) Howland, and her niece,
nephews and grand-nieces. Norene grew up in Victoria and graduated from Mt.
Douglas High School in 1964. Some of her happiest memories were from the
summers she worked as a Y camp leader at Camp Thunderbird. Norene attended
the University of Victoria for 2 years and taught at St. Anne's Academy for
a year before heading to California in the summer of 1967 to study at UCLA
where she met her first husband, James Sibley. They lived in Germany, New
Orleans, and California while Norene raised her two daughters, Alice
Victoria and Heather Elizabeth. Norene earned a Bachelor's degree in
Geography from San Jose State in 1982, and began work in the Silicon
Valley", where she met Joseph James (Jim) Blazina. They married on May 6,
1989, and moved to Victoria shortly afterwards. Norene began working at
Camosun College, first in the Personnel department, then as the Budget
Officer. She retired in 2002. Norene was also an active member of St.
Columba's Church, where she sang in the choir, led summer Bible school, and
was Church Treasurer. Norene's involvement with the Girl Guides began in
1956, and was to continue for the rest of her life. Flamingo" served for
many years in the Portage Inlet district as a Guide leader and certified
Camping Guider, and later as District Commissioner. She received the Gold
Merit Award" in 2005 for outstanding contributions to Girl Guides. She was
also given the Girl Guide Fortitude Award" for her bravery through adversity
in her battle with cancer. Music filled Norene's life. She sang in many
choirs, including the Camosun Choristers, Victoria Choral Society, the GALA
Choir, and of course, the Hootenanny Housewives. She loved to play piano in
her living room for anyone who would sing along. Her guitar was as much a
part of her camping gear as her tent, and her songs and songbooks enlivened
many a campfire. Norene lived a full but much too short life. She will be
greatly missed by her family, her many friends in Canada and the U.S., and
by her Japanese daughter" Miyuki Osawa. We especially want to thank Norene's
many friends, care workers, nurses and doctors who cared for and supported
her and her family. Norene requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be
made to the James Bradshaw Memorial Bursary. Checks should be payable to
GVPAF," cite the bursary, and mail to Greater Victoria Performing Arts
Festival, PO Box 32015, 3651 Shelbourne Street, Victoria BC, V8P 5S2. A
funeral service for Norene will be held at 2:30pm on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006
at Christ Church Cathedral located at Quadra and Rockland Ave. Reception to
follow at St. Martin in the Fields Church Hall, 550 Obed Ave. 202067
