AXFORD, Herbert Melvin February 18, 2006 Herbert, after a period of illness
at home, passed away peacefully in hospital, surrounded by his family. Born
in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on July 25th 1918, he was predeceased by parents
Gudmunder and Ethel Axford (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and brothers Elmer (June,
deceased) of Kingston, Ontario, Don (Ruth), of Calgary, Alberta, Ted
(Phyllis) of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57
years, Joan, and their children: James Herbert (Nancy) of Nanaimo, Donald
Clark (Joan), of Ottawa, Ontario, and Marilyn Jane Kuss (Michael) of Port
McNeill, grandchildren Adam Axford (Becky), Graham Axford and Julia Axford
of Ottawa, MaryJane Baker (John) of Nanaimo, Peter Kuss and Alexis Kuss of
Victoria and great-grandson, Devon Baker of Nanaimo. After Bert received his
Bachelor degree in Commerce at the University of Manitoba, he gained his
Masters of Commerce at the University of Toronto. His education was
interrupted, as it was for many others, by World War II. From 1941 to 1946,
he served in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve, rising to the rank
of Lieutenant Commander. In 1947 he married Joan and in quick succession had
three children while he earned his PhD (in Economics) from the University of
Wisconsin. After a career as a university professor (Pacific Lutheran in
Tacoma, University of Alberta, Waterloo Lutheran), Bert joined the civil
service first, as Superintendent of Cost Ascertainment in the Post Office,
then later in the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. Following his civil service
interlude, Bert moved to Lethbridge, Alberta to participate in the founding
of its University. He remained there, as head of the Economics department,
until he retired and moved to Victoria in 1975. Bert really enjoyed his
retirement. He and Joan were active in All Saints Anglican Church where he
sang in the choir and they were regulars at its Birthday Luncheons. For over
25 years they were members View Royal Garden Club and won many ribbons at
its Flower Show. Victoria also let Bert indulge his curiosity, finally he
could take university courses (like Indonesian and Chemistry) just for fun
as well as practical" courses at the Juan de Fuca Seniors Center (carpentry
and lapidary). The carpentry came in handy as he also continued building the
world's biggest personal filing system. Eclectically, he expanded his
interests and studied trees and forests, pursued his genealogy and tried to
master computers. Despite his many distractions he always had time for
people, making long lasting friends of all his neighbours, becoming
especially close with those along Stancil Lane. This was a good thing as he
spent every possible Saturday listening to opera in his garden. Bert and
Joan enjoyed exploring BC in camping trips in the summer, Elder Hostel in
the fall, and visiting kinfolk all year round. A memorial service will be
held on Thursday, February 23rd at 3:00 at All Saints Anglican Church on the
corner of Pallisier and Stewart Streets, just off the Old Island Highway in
View Royal. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Heart and
Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon, #107, 1001 Cloverdale Avenue, Victoria,
BC, V8X 4C9. 209027

CARTWRIGHT, Joyce August 23, 1911 February 15, 2006 Joyce Cartwright, nee
Gibbons, born in Haselmere, Surrey, England came to Canada with her family
when she was 8 years old. The family settled in Dauphin, Manitoba where
Joyce finished school and won an Isbister scholarship which she used to
attend the University of Manitoba. She earned degrees in Arts, 1933, and
Education, 1966. After getting her Arts degree, she taught for a number of
years around Manitoba, and then fulfilled a dream by completing nurses'
training in Winnipeg in 1946. She and Milton Cartwright met and married at
the end of her nurses' training and moved to a farm outside Pilot Mound,
Manitoba. Milton and Joyce had two children, Lyn (a.k.a. Diane) and Charlie,
and Joyce nursed there in Pilot Mound and then returned to teaching. The
family left the farm a few years after the children were born and Joyce
continued to teach, becoming head of the business department at Churchill
High School, Winnipeg, by the time she retired. Charlie had gone to British
Columbia for university degrees in music and biology and Joyce and Milton
followed a few years later, arriving in Victoria in 1980. Milton died at
home in 1986 and Joyce lived on in their house for another 20 years. She had
dear old friends, many of whom still lived in Manitoba, such as Betty and
Mike Young and Family, and Vera Robinson and Peggy Fraser to name a few;
many Victoria friends had passed away or moved from Victoria, one by one,
except for Mary Sandford. Joyce had made new friends in the last 15 years of
her life Rose, Jean, Abalan and Charbal Hage. Also dear to her were Louise,
a home care worker with her for three years, and Irene, Andrea, Sharyl and
Nikki, as well as Nikki's young children, Keigan and Meggie. She was also
much loved by Toronto friends Adam Stone, Martin Sheiner and Rhys Fockler
(husband of Lyn). All who knew her held her in high esteem for her kindness,
generosity and determination as well as her spiritual strength and
resilience. In the last decade of her life Joyce published her poetry and
kept on playing her piano up to a few weeks before she died at home with her
son and daughter at her side and beloved cat, Silken, nearby. The family and
friends would like to note with thanks the help and support of Dr. T.
Rosenberg and team and the Victoria Hospice nurses in Joyce's last,
challenging days. Her memorial service will be at First Memorial Funeral
Home, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, Thursday, February 23rd, at 2 p.m. with
a reception following at 845 Isbister Street, Esquimalt. The Rev. Canon

STIEBRITZ, Dr. Horst-Peter R. (Peter) June 10, 1930 February 15, 2006 It is
with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter who died peacefully
surrounded by his family at his home in Victoria. Peter's 7year-long battle
with cancer never dampened his spirit or slowed him down as he remained
active, full of humour and involved with his family and friends till the
end. Peter was born in Heidelberg, Germany and adopted Canada as his home in
1953. While crossing the Atlantic, he met his beloved wife Rosemarie, of 51
years. Together they had 3 children, Norbert, Brigitte Gammon (Brian),
Michael (Yvonne), and his cherished grandchildren, Christopher (Daisy),
Melissa Abrams (Shawn), Jonathan, Taylor, Alycia and Reid. His brother
Helmut of Heidelberg and many other relatives in Germany survive him.
Peter's career led his family from coast to coast, with homes in Montreal,
Chilliwack, Halifax, Ottawa, Edmonton and Victoria. His career would
traverse both Government and the private sector. His outgoing nature, charm,
wit, intelligent discussions and lifelong desire to constantly improve
himself allowed for many awards and designations including his Doctorate in
Valuation Sciences. He continued to serve on groups and organizations up
till the end and those who knew him will miss his enthusiasm, wisdom and
charm. Peter lived for his family and loved all of us immeasurably. He
provided for everyone on so many levels, but mostly with unconditional love.
Thank you Dad for teaching us life's great lessons. The void you leave will

SUDDS, Michael Norman Mike passed away peacefully on February 18 with his
loving wife, Sherry, by his side. In his usual style, Mike faced his brief
time with cancer with a positive spirit and a gentle dignity. He is forever
cherished and lovingly remembered by his wife, Sherry; and children Hayley,
Brydon and Evan, who were all his pride and joy. Mike was predeceased by his
mother, Sonia and his brother, Stanley. Mike is survived by his father,
Norman (Hazel); mother-in-law, Dorothy Davies as well as their close-knit
family members and longtime friends who provided unwavering love and
support. Mike was born in Montreal, moved to Victoria at age 1 and later
graduating from Mount Doug High School. He enjoyed his 31 years with Canada
Post, making countless friends of fellow posties and customers, until he
retired early due to the challenges of Parkinson's Disease. Despite
declining health for the past few years, he lived life with tremendous
optimism; always had big and creative ideas; and truly made everyone he met,
his friend. Mike was the very best of men enthusiastic, genuine, generous of
heart, and kind. A faithful son, devoted father, treasured husband. He'll
live on forever in our hearts. The family wishes to thank the special angels
at Hospice who made Mike's final days a time of comfort and love. Family,
friends and all whose lives Mike has touched are invited to join the family
for the "gig " we know Mike wants, on Friday, February 24, from 2:00 4:00 pm
