AXFORD, Herbert Melvin February 18, 2006 Herbert, after a period of illness
at home, passed away peacefully in hospital, surrounded by his family. Born
in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on July 25th 1918, he was predeceased by parents
Gudmunder and Ethel Axford (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and brothers Elmer (June,
deceased) of Kingston, Ontario, Don (Ruth), of Calgary, Alberta, Ted
(Phyllis) of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57
years, Joan, and their children: James Herbert (Nancy) of Nanaimo, Donald
Clark (Joan), of Ottawa, Ontario, and Marilyn Jane Kuss (Michael) of Port
McNeill, grandchildren Adam Axford (Becky), Graham Axford and Julia Axford
of Ottawa, MaryJane Baker (John) of Nanaimo, Peter Kuss and Alexis Kuss of
Victoria and great-grandson, Devon Baker of Nanaimo. After Bert received his
Bachelor degree in Commerce at the University of Manitoba, he gained his
Masters of Commerce at the University of Toronto. His education was
interrupted, as it was for many others, by World War II. From 1941 to 1946,
he served in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve, rising to the rank
of Lieutenant Commander. In 1947 he married Joan and in quick succession had
three children while he earned his PhD (in Economics) from the University of
Wisconsin. After a career as a university professor (Pacific Lutheran in
Tacoma, University of Alberta, Waterloo Lutheran), Bert joined the civil
service first, as Superintendent of Cost Ascertainment in the Post Office,
then later in the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. Following his civil service
interlude, Bert moved to Lethbridge, Alberta to participate in the founding
of its University. He remained there, as head of the Economics department,
until he retired and moved to Victoria in 1975. Bert really enjoyed his
retirement. He and Joan were active in All Saints Anglican Church where he
sang in the choir and they were regulars at its Birthday Luncheons. For over
25 years they were members View Royal Garden Club and won many ribbons at
its Flower Show. Victoria also let Bert indulge his curiosity, finally he
could take university courses (like Indonesian and Chemistry) just for fun
as well as practical" courses at the Juan de Fuca Seniors Center (carpentry
and lapidary). The carpentry came in handy as he also continued building the
world's biggest personal filing system. Eclectically, he expanded his
interests and studied trees and forests, pursued his genealogy and tried to
master computers. Despite his many distractions he always had time for
people, making long lasting friends of all his neighbours, becoming
especially close with those along Stancil Lane. This was a good thing as he
spent every possible Saturday listening to opera in his garden. Bert and
Joan enjoyed exploring BC in camping trips in the summer, Elder Hostel in
the fall, and visiting kinfolk all year round. A memorial service will be
held on Thursday, February 23rd at 3:00 at All Saints Anglican Church on the
corner of Pallisier and Stewart Streets, just off the Old Island Highway in
View Royal. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Heart and
Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon, #107, 1001 Cloverdale Avenue, Victoria,
BC, V8X 4C9. 209027

BURN, Therese Margaret "The Love of my Life" Therese died peacefully at the
Chemainus Long Term Care Centre on the evening of Friday, February 10th
after fighting a long and courageous battle with seizures; her husband Neil
was holding her hand and her long time friend Maisie, was by her side.
Therese was born in London, England on April 5th 1926; her mother was
French, her father was Irish and it showed in her spirit! She was raised in
Dublin, Ireland and educated in a convent school. When she was just 17 years
old, she lied about her age so she could join the British Army during the
Second World War. In 1952 she married Dick Roper, they immigrated to Canada
in 1957 and lived in the Guelph area for many years. They had no children
but they had a long and happy marriage. Therese loved her cats, she was an
avid gardener and knew the names and medicinal uses of dozens of herbs which
she wrote about in a column in the local Guelph newspaper. She loved
cooking, gardening, painting in watercolour and was skilled in the practice
of Tai Chi. When Dick retired, they decided to move to Chemainus but just
six days before the move, Dick was hit by a car while riding his bicycle and
was tragically killed. However, because of her great strength of spirit,
Therese courageously made the move on her own and quickly became a volunteer
in many organizations, Lifeline, the Chemainus Hospital Foundation,
Chemainus Hospital Auxiliary, Thrift Store, Arts and Business Council. She
enjoyed working in the kiosk in Waterwheel Park telling visitors all about
Chemainus and it was in Chemainus that she first met Neil Burn. Therese and
Neil were married in 1997, they always had a very close and loving
relationship and they never stopped being in love. They delighted in working
in their garden, they would walk three miles almost every day and together
they enjoyed concerts, ballets, operas and plays. They traveled across
Canada, they took trips to Ireland, England and Europe; Paris was the place
Therese enjoyed the most. In the last couple of years they were unable to
travel but they still enjoyed their walks, gardening and concerts. Therese
is finally at peace now and leaves behind her loving husband Neil; she was
his constant companion, his friend, his beloved soul mate, the love of his
life. At Therese's request, there will be no religious service of any kind
but friends and neighbours are invited to 8079 Spinnaker Drive in Crofton
between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday, February 25th to remember Therese, to
celebrate her life, her willingness to help people, her joy in living and
her lovely sense of humour. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the
Chemainus Health Care Centre. 206842

Schools. She met and married Don while he was apprenticing for a Certified
General Accountant designation. Ann and Don celebrated a 50 year milestone
June 29, 2003 with a reception at the Victoria Royal Yacht club friends from
North America attending. Don and Ann lived in the USA, Venezuela, and
Vancouver finally retiring to Victoria. Ann loved a walk in a meadow of wild
flowers, dogs clipping at her heels mostly, but indulged Don his passion for
the open waters. Ann loved Don completely and once again they are united.

staff and management at Parkwood Place who did their best to attend Ann's

HERRICK, John Frederick Alexander May 20, 1951 February 18, 2006 Over the
past year, John defined the meaning of courage. Cancer overtook his body but
it never dampened his spirit or wicked sense of humour. He always took such
amazing care of his special ladies: Wendy, his wife & soul-mate of 33 years,
their daughters, Brandie Yarish & Shelaina Postings. Dad loved you Mom, from
the moment he first laid eyes on you; his poetry tells us so. Brandie, Dad
was so proud of you, for persevering with your Master's during such a tough
year. Shelaina, Dad held on hard, longing to cradle his first grandchild,
just as he did with you, with so much love, the day we brought you home from
the hospital. If he'd hand selected son-in-laws, it would have been you, Bob
& Steve. Thanks Judy & Eugene Yarish & Ron & Ann Postings for being such
great role models. A compassionate man, with strong family values, who
enjoyed the company of good friends. He took pleasure in life's simple
activities. He loved to putter in the garden & was constantly renovating.
Before passing, John said that this was going to be the year to golf more;
he was right, only now there are no windshields to hit or expensive green
fees. Fishing, baseball & travel filled his free time. When the girls were
young, John spent many days coaching little league & will be remembered for
his random trivia facts, crooked pigtails & his famous spaghetti & lasagna.
His cats, Francis (the Wanderer) & Buttons (the Princess) are already
lonely. John's personality served him well in sales over the years. In the
early years, he worked in car sales, then pharmaceuticals. In '81, he
relocated his family to Victoria & opened Microwave Cooking, Etc. For the
past 15 years, he enjoyed a career in real estate. Until recently, he was
working for Royal LePage Coast Capital. John was predeceased by his parents
John & Irene Herrick, his in-laws Doug & Eileen Kendall, his Godparents Fred
& Marie Herrick, his sister-inlaw Judy Ostere & Uncle Fred Phillips. He
leaves behind his brothers & sisters Stephen, Michael & Rheen Herrick &
Annette Lloyd & Susan Renaud. His second parents, Lil & Lorne Bailey
(Sherron & Wendy) & his brother-in-law Blaine Kendall & sister-in-laws
Connie (Colin) Lang & Sarah Spatling will also miss him. Aunts Jennie Dand &
Connie West, cousins Alan (Nancy) & David (Gail) Dand & cousins Danny
(Michelle) & Grant Phillips, Godchildren Cynthia Griffiths & Scott
Sutherland & 12 nieces & nephews will remember him fondly. Special thanks to
best buds, Kirk Sutherland & John Samuell, for so many years of friendship.
Murray Lawson you have been a true friend & an amazing business partner.
John takes with him wonderful memories of Qualicum Beach & December 23rd,
shared with his friends of 25 years the Gourmet Group & their extended
families. During the past year, we had so much help along the way. Special
thanks to Dr's: Toyota, Ma, Sun, Meadows, Boyle, McKenzie & Lines. Also, the
BC Cancer Agency, the Red Cross, Mount Newton Centre, Bev Hurlburt, Colette,
Alex, Patti & the nursing `angels' & support staff. From the depths of our
hearts, thanks to everyone who kept us in their thoughts & prayers this past
year. A Celebration of John's life will be held by Rev. Gord Thurston on
Saturday, February 25th at 2:00 pm at the Mary Winspear Centre Charlie White
Theatre 2243 Beacon Ave. in Sidney. Donations may be made in John's memory
to the Neuro-Oncology Fund, Vancouver Hospital Foundation (

MORRIS, Neil Sydney July 16, 1915 February 18, 2006 It is with great sadness
for us but with knowledge that he looked forward to reunion with Helen, that
we announce the death of our Uncle Neil at the age of 90 years. He was born
in the family farm home at Donavon (Birdview), Saskatchewan, the youngest of
three brothers in the family of Ella and Tom Morris. The family moved to
Saskatoon in 1925 and started a small country hardware/grocery store (the
Sterling Grocery) that stayed in business for 22 years. Despite his youth,
Neil was the primary business and sales person over most of those years. He
continued his interest in business as a manager for a wholesale grocery
operation in Saskatoon, and later as a credit manager for a wholesale
hardware firm in Winnipeg. He and Helen moved to Victoria in 1965. He
continued to work at various periodic part-time jobs there for many years,
was an active and welcoming "greeter " at Emmanuel Baptist Church, and
especially enjoyed being on the Condominium Council at their home on Oak Bay
Avenue. After leaving active service on the Council, he continued to serve
as an informal "consultant " to the remaining members, and as a general
"man-oncall " for all those living in the condominium. Neil was predeceased
by his dear wife Helen of 54 years in April 2003, and by his two brothers
Stanley and Ralph. He is survived by his sisterin-law (Margaret Morris), by
his nephew and his wife (Ralph and Carole Morris), by his niece and her
husband (Patricia and Jeff Donat), and by his great niece (Kimberly Morris)
and great nephews (Richard Morris, James and Tim Lozinsky). Our family
thanks his many friends for their love and caring attitude toward Neil,
especially in the years following the death of Helen. We also are deeply
grateful to the nursing staff of the Richmond Pavilion Hospice for their
gentle compassion and thoughtfulness. A Memorial service will be held at
Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2121 Cedar Hill Cross Road in Victoria, B.C. on 27
February at 2:30 PM. Neil and Helen generously supported many charities but
we suggest that they would appreciate your memorial donations to Operation
Eyesight Universal, 4 Parkdale Crescent NW, Calgary, Alberta T2N 9Z9. 209526
