AMES, Dorothy Evelyn Beloved wife, mother and grandmother who passed away

ASHLEY, Frederick Thomas Henry Age 86, died peacefully at the Royal Jubilee
Hospital, Victoria, B.C. on Thursday, March 2, 2006. Fred was predeceased by
his wife Phyllis in July 2005. Fred was born December 4, 1919, in Marbury,
Cheshire, England, to the late Harold Randall Ashley and Rhoda Mary Ashley
(nee Hancock) and was raised by his uncle Wilf in Whitchurch. He began his
working life in the dairy industry as a cheese maker but in 1940 Fred
enlisted in the Royal Air force. He served in London during some of the
heaviest raids of the war and subsequently with the Commonwealth Air
Training Command in Canada. Upon returning to England he met Phyllis, who
was also serving in the RAF. Following the war, Frederick joined the
National Fire Service and began raising his family of three children,
Christopher, Anthony and Jean. In 1957 the Ashley family immigrated to
Canada to settle in Winnipeg. Upon retirement, Fred and Phyllis moved to
Victoria. Frederick is lovingly remembered by his family son Christopher
(Winnipeg) and grandchildren Caroline and Chris; his son Anthony and his
wife Valerie (Ottawa) and granddaughter Jennifer, his daughter Jean
(Nanaimo) and children Cherrel, Ian, Thomas, Cyndi, Sandi, Krysta and
several great-grandchildren. Fred will always be remembered as a happy go
lucky guy who would always go that extra mile to help his family and
friends. He was, and will always be, the best dad and granddad. He will be
sorely missed by us all but now he goes to rest with the love of his life,
Phyllis. We would like to thank Dr. Stanwood and the staff of the hospitals
that took such good care of Dad during his period of declining health.
Sincere appreciation is also sent to the staff of Juan de Fuca Home Support
who took care of Mom and Dad over the past years and to Veterans Affairs
Canada for providing such wonderful support. Visitation will take place from
10 12 am Tuesday March 14, 2006 at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1803 Quadra Street,
Victoria, B.C. A memorial service will follow at Sands Funeral Chapel on
Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at 1 pm. Fred and Phyllis will be interred at the
Hatley Memorial Garden with future interment in England. 214655

BATER, Garnet Stanley (Gar) It is with great sadness that we announce the
sudden passing of Garnet Stanley Bater on February 28, 2006. Born on
December 3, 1938 he is predeceased by his mother and father. He will be
sadly missed by his wife of 44 years, Erlene, daughter Brenda (Phil) Venoit,
son Blair, grandchildren Devon, Jessie, and Cassidy, brothers Bob (Jacque),

BLOCK, Joyce Joyce slipped away on Sunday, March 5, 2006. She was
predeceased by her husband Ronald Block September 1980. She leaves to mourn
her passing daughters Valerie Creighton (Hugh), Colleen Block (Ian). Also
grandchildren Eleanor McNamara and Patrick McNamara. Originally from
Alberta, she leaves many family members and friends in Alberta, USA and
British Columbia. A private family celebration of her life to take place at
a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to

BRIZIDA, Jamie Sousa Jaime, beloved husband of Cecilia; much loved brother,
uncle, cousin and godfather to many, passed away peacefully March 4th, 2006
at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. He is survived by his adoring wife, Cecilia;
his sisters, Carolina and Honorina; his sister-in-Iaws and brother-in-laws,
Lucy and Tom (de Medeiros), Lean (de Melo); a great loss for all his
nephews, nieces and godchildren, who he leaves behind, not only in Victoria,
but all across Canada, United States, Portugal and the Azores. Jaime was
born January 8th, 1911 in Furnas, Sao Miguel, Azores. He later immigrated to
Victoria in 1966. Special thanks to Dr. James Piercey and the nursing staff
at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. A Prayer Service will be held at the Sands
Funeral Chapel, "Memorial Chapel of Chimes ", 1803 Quadra Street, Victoria,
BC on Tuesday, March 7th, 2006 at 6:00 pm. Thence to Our Lady of Fatima

you in October, with the bright blue sky and the wind off the ocean so crisp
and clear. The kind of day you loved. I will always come to you, my love,
until the last trip when I'll never leave. You were the most wonderful wife
and mother that I and our sons could have ever hoped to have and we always
knew that you were devoted to us in every way. Through all of life's ups and
downs, you were never wanting in love, courage and devotion to all of us.

CRONK, George James (World War II Veteran Serving on the East Coast of
Canada with the RCNVR) Born June 15th, 1919 in Victoria, BC. Passed away
March 5th, 2006 in Victoria, BC. George Cronk, dear husband of the late
Gladys. Loving father of Howard (Noreen). Fondly remembered by his 4
grandchildren, Ron (Kathleen), Gary (Sherry), Russell (Shari) and Colleen
Woodger (Mark); and his 5 great grandchildren, Graham, Paige, Riley, Liam
and Logan. He will be sadly missed by his extended family, especially Doris
Hunniford, Lois Lumley, Terry Hunniford and Rory Hunniford, their families
and his many friends. Survived by his sisters, Elsie Sutton of Parksville
and Lil Cummins of Victoria. Predeceased by his brothers, Percy and Jimmy
and a sister, Bessie Margetish. Georges earlier years were spent in
Shawnigan Lake where he attended school, later moving to Victoria to work in
the lumber industry. Grandpa was known to many as 'Mr. Fixit'. The family
wish to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Central Care Home
and the nursing staff at VGH, 7A for the love and care George received. A
Funeral Service will be held at the Sands Funeral Chapel, 'Memorial Chapel
of Chimes', 1803 Quadra Street, Victoria, BC on Friday, March 10th, 2006 at
1:00 pm, followed by a reception in the Arbor Reception Centre of the

GRIGG, Joan June 18, 1921 March 5, 2006 Joan Grigg died peacefully in her
sleep. Born in Poona, India and raised in Oxford, England, she met her
Canadian Air Force pilot while on police duty at a dance. She came out to
Moose Jaw, Sask. as a war bride. After Neil's death from leukemia, Joan
moved to Victoria to raise their two children, John and Sheila. Joan loved
Victoria, first living on the Gorge, and then at Bickerton Court in James
Bay, where her special love was gardening in the PolyGarden. Predeceased by
her husband Neil (1950) and her brother John (1996), Joan is lovingly
remembered by daughter Sheila, son John and their spouses Phil and Minerva,
sisters Maise and Ivy, and sister-in-law Joan, and her very much loved
granddaughter, Rachel. Also many special relatives on Neil's side. Much
thanks for all the gentle loving care Joan received for the last 10 years at

JORDENS, Donat (Don) Sept. 13, 1933 Feb. 25, 2006 After a courageous battle
with cancer, we sadly announce the passing of Donat. He leaves behind his
loving wife Dorothy, son Tim Jordens (Marcie); grandchildren Adam and Amanda
Jordens; stepchildren Margaret Wilcox (Norman); Dan Walters (Kim) and Larry
Walters (Sandy). He will be greatly missed by his 9 grandchildren, 6
great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Donat will be
remembered for his many accomplishments. He was an outstanding horseman, a
well respected real estate developer and a superb painter who would never
give up. Donat enjoyed playing golf and socializing with family and friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Postuk, all the home support nurses, and
the Victoria Hospice for all their kindness, compassion and support. A

KERSTEN, Katharina Wilhelmina (Toos) It is with heavy hearts that we
announce the passing of a beloved wife, devoted mother and precious Oma.
Kathy passed away at home on March 3, 2006 surrounded by her family after a
courageous battle of lymphoma. Born on January 4, 1934 in Limburg,
Netherlands she married her sweetheart, Theo in 1954, and together they
immigrated to Canada in 1957. She will be forever remembered by her devoted
husband of 52 years, Theo; children, Tony (Leanne), Gerald (Lisa), Monique
(Martin), Cain; and grandchildren, Jennifer (Aaron), Jim (Sarah), Jane,
Andrew and Madelyn. Kathy also leaves behind family in the Netherlands,
Alberta, BC and many dear friends. We would like to extend our deepest
thanks to Dr. Martin Lane, Dr. Nicol MacPherson an Victoria Hospice society

LANE, Michael July 26, 1951 March 3, 2006 Michael passed away peacefully at
home on the 3rd of March 2006, surrounded by his family. He was and always
will be dearly loved and greatly missed by his family and friends. Michael
was born in Regina Sask. and raised in Ottawa. He lived in Toronto and then
travelled out West to Victoria, B.C. in 1976 He met and married his wife
Dale & they raised their two children, Sean and Erin. Michael had a love of
the outdoors, enjoyed a good political discussion, loved history, antiques,
books & the company of his family and friends. Michael is survived by his
wife Dale, son Sean and daughter Erin. He lovingly leaves behind his sisters
Janice, Cathy, Carole, Chrissy and his brothers John and Billy. He had many
nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, in-laws & friends that he loved
dearly as well. A celebration of Michael's life will be held on Friday March

MCLAREN, Craig Alexander June 12, 1992 March 6, 2006 Craig Alexander at the
age of 13 years, passed away peacefully in his parents loving arms at 2:30
p.m Monday, March 6, 2006 at Canucks Place Children's Hospice. During his
short life, Craig touched the lives of countless numbers of people with his
quiet charm, his beautiful curly hair and his special musical talents. He
loved to play his favourite keyboard, and sing along in choir performances
in his own way. He was predeceased by his big brother Trevor, his granny
Rose McLaren and his Opa and Oma Hermann & Gisela Cornelsen. He is survived
by his parents Mark and Karin who will miss him deeply. He is survived by
his grandfather Jack McLaren and many wonderful Aunts, Uncles and cousins:
the Albistons, the Alexanders, the Cornelsens, the Gehringers, the Kremners,
the McCues, the McLarens, the Shields and the Thiessens. A Memorial Mass
will be held on Friday, March 10 at 1:30pm at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic
Church, 1345 West 73rd Avenue, Vancouver. Thanks to all the staff at BC
Childrens Hospital, especially in the ER and TCU. Thanks also to the staff
at Canuck Place who made Craig's last hours as comfortable as possible. And
thanks to Dr. Hal Siden & Dr. Tara Tucker for overseeing everything. In lieu

NORMAN: Lenore Passed away peacefully at James Bay Lodge on March 5, 2006.
Born in Nanaimo, BC on March 9, 1909 and was predeceased by her husband,
Geoffrey Clifford in March 1980 and her sisters, Margaret and Marcelle.
Lenore will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Barbara Anne (Ron)
Gibbons of Victoria; her son, David of Vancouver; 3 grandchildren, Donna
(Tony)White, Aurela (Michael) Edgson and Andrea (Jason) Taylor; 6 great
grandchildren, Geoffrey, Liam, Conor, Josiah, Abigail and Zachary; nieces,
Beverly, Roberta and Jackie and nephews, Raymond and Teddy. Lenore was very
active with the Order of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. She
also liked to knit and donated much of her work to charity. A celebration of
Lenore's life will be held at First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1155 Fort
Street, on Saturday, March 11 at 2:00 P.M. with a reception to follow in the

RHODES, Wilfred Arthur Born July 26, 1918, gone to be with the Lord March 5,
2006. Survived by his loving wife Margaret, sons Stephen and Ray, and
daughters Louise and Effie. Predeceased by son Wally. A memorial service

SMITH, Lawrence Fredrick Sept. 16, 1923 (Thurso, PQ) March 1, 2006
(Victoria, BC) Larry is survived and will be deeply missed by his wife
Florrie of 62 years; son David; along with other family, friends and
neighbours. Having retired ffrom the Liquor Control Branch, he enjoyed
travel, gardening and his time at the Metchosin Golf Club as well as the #91
Legion. A bit of a jokester, Larry was a Golden Glove Boxer and leaves many
fond memories of his forgiving, generous and supportive nature. Funeral

STANLAKE, Ken passed away peacefully the morning of March 5 at Saanich
Peninsula Hospital in his 90th year. Ken was a true pioneer being one of the
first to bring cold storage, television and cable TV to the Peninsula. In
addition, he was a lifetime member of the North and South Saanich
Agricultural Society for which he was a tireless worker. He will be
remembered for his tenacity, ingenuity, honesty and his commitment to
community and social values. His energy and indefatigable spirit were an
inspiration for everyone who knew him. Ken is survived by his beloved wife
Patricia of 63 years and his four children; John (Lora-lea), Bob (Lea), Mike
(Elizabeth) and Sue (Eric). He will be sadly missed by his eleven
grandchildren and two great granddaughters: Allison, Jennifer, Simon, Bree
and Meghan, Matthew and Louisa, Cara, Matt, Patricia, Graham, Mackenzie and
Jorja. He leaves three sisters, Dorothy Strojich, Ruth Uzzell and Peri
Leander and his Sister-inlaw Betty Byers. A memorial service to celebrate
Ken's life will be held at St. Mary's Church, 1973 Cultra Avenue,
Saanichton, BC., Saturday March 11, 2006, at 2:00 pm. Reception will follow
at the Saanich Fairgrounds on Stellys X Road. In lieu of flowers donations

STELCK, Mildred Margaret Passed away at Victoria General Hospital on March
1, 2006. Born January 4, 1913, she was predeceased by her loving husband
Gerald Arthur Rannie Stelck on August 24, 1991, her sister Marjorie and her
brother Clarence. She leaves behind her loving children, Aletha Kochuk
(Nester) and David as well as grandchildren Scott and Alyson, whom she
adored, and nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Goddaughter,
Claudine Fletcher. Mildred was born in Winnipeg and married Gerald in 1937.
They moved to Victoria in 1941. Mildred was proud of the garden party she
arranged at her home for the IODE at which the Naden Naval band played. She
was very involved with the Metropolitan United Church and was very active
with the Victoria Symphony Society, being president of the Women's Committee
for many years. Mildred attended the first symphony concert and was still
enjoying concerts until her recent stroke. She was a life member of the
Victoria Symphony. Another great love of Mildred's was golf. She was proud
of the life membership bestowed on her from the Royal Colwood Golf Club. She
also loved bridge and was a proud member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Mildred's
hands were always busy creating all kinds of crafts. She belonged to the
Esquimalt Arts and Crafts Society and has participated in many craft fairs
donating the money raised to scholarship funds. Mildred and Gerald traveled
extensively and after Gerald died she took her whole family on several
cruises which the family all enjoyed. Many thanks to the staff and friends
at the Victorian at McKenzie who were so kind to Mom as well as the V.I.H.A.
and nurses and staff at the Victoria General Hospital. A memorial service
will be held at Gordon Head United Church, 4201 Tyndall Avenue on Thursday,
March 9 at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mildred's memory may
be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or to a charity of your choice.

STOBBART, Margaret Rose Born September 14th, 1937 in North Vancouver,
BCPassed away March 3rd, 2006 in Victoria BC after a courageous battle with
cancer. Margaret dearly beloved wife to David for 53 years. Loving mother of
Norman (Julie), Christine Holte (Reg), Shelly Thompson, and Pamela Luco
(Gerry). Fondly remembered by her grandchildren Colin, Ryan, Alison, Cheryl,
Leslie, Rachel, Stephen, Kristin, Mary and David. She will be sadly missed
by her mother Thelma Tyson, her sisters Mary and Maxine, her relatives and
friends, and especially her feathered friend Gabby and her dog Madchen.
Margaret and David married March 20, 1953 and when David joined the army
they moved cross country in a blizzard to Winnipeg in May 1954. Army life
took them from Winnipeg to Germany in 1958, back to Gagetown New Brunswick
in 1960, on to Shilo Manitoba in 1966, Chilliwack BC in 1971 and on to
Victoria when David retired in 1974. Having cut short her education to
become wife and mother, she always desired to return to school and enrolled
as an adult student in Shilo, Manitoba where she graduated with a
scholarship to Brandon University. The move to Chilliwack interrupted her
education again but once established in Victoria she was able to complete
her degree in Psychology, graduating in 1984. She worked in many health care
related positions until cancer forced her to retire but she especially
enjoyed the work she did with her employer and friend Richard Rondow. She
was an accomplished bowler, winning many trophies, but later came to love
golf and that became her focus. She was a past member of Beta Sigma Phi and
a long standing member of Metchosin Golf Club. The family wishes to express
their gratitude to Dr. Desmond Erwin, and also to the staff at Victoria

TODD, Noreen Louise Elizabeth Wife, mother, auntie, friend passed away
peacefully after a short illness on March 6, 2006 surrounded by her family.
She will be forevermissed by her husband Derek, her children Michael
(Dolores) and Debbie and their children, Jesse, Alicia, Jake, Risha, James
and Ashley, her friend Peggy, her niece Di-Lin and her cousins Robin (Norm)
and Barnabas. She was a generous, loving, beautiful person and all our lives
were enriched by knowing her. No service, no flowers, just wonderful

WOUTERLOOD van DOESBURG, Lolkje (Loni) Loni passed away peacefully at
Glengarry Hospital on March 4, 2006. The eldest of four daughters, she was
born June 13, 1911 to parents Frans and Neeltje Valk (Kuyvenhoven). Loni was
predeceased by her husband Jan in 1989. Jan, Loni and their five children
immigrated to Canada from The Hague, The Netherlands in 1957. Loni was a
loving mother and a very caring grandmother. She leaves her children: Wil
(Victor) Troop in Nova Scotia; Frans (Faye) in Merville; Kees (Kathryn) in
Malaysia; Robert in Montreal; and Leonie (David) Johns in Victoria.
Grandchildren: Sandie & Heather; Rod, Lisa, Christopher & Melissa; Allison &
Jaimie; Marijke: Alexandra, Geoffrey & Carolyn; as well as her three sisters
and many relatives in The Netherlands. Loni was a devoted member of St.
Andrew's Presbyterian Church, a long-time member of the choir as well as a
charter member of St. Andrew's Handbell Choir. A Service will be held at
MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets, Victoria, BC on
Friday, March 10th at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
