LEATHER, Mary Passed away peacefully at the Lodge at Broadmead on April 14,
2006. Predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Jack, on January 7, 2006. Mary
is survived by and will be greatly missed by her sons, John and Ronnie,
daughter Nancy, son-in-law Jim, daughter-in-law Nadine, grandsons, Johnny,
Jamie, Jason and Jonathan (Lori), cousins and sisters-in law, Josephine and
Alice, nieces and nephews in Toronto as well as friends in both the east and
the west. Born in Toronto on June 16, 1917 Mary lived and worked in Toronto
until her retirement at the end of '70s. Mary also served in the WACS during
WW2, hoping to meet up with "her" Jack who was already serving overseas.
After retirement Mary and Jack moved first to Campbellford, Ontario and in
1981 Mary and Jack headed west to the Sidney and Victoria areas to be closer
to the 'kids'. For those fortunate enough to have known Mary before the
sands of time took their toll, Mary will be remembered for her love of art,
music, her quick wit and honesty; always a willing shoulder to lean on and a
ready ear at the end of the line. Mary took people as she found them and
understood at an early age the true meaning of the word equality long before
the politically correct joined the cause. While Mary celebrated our
similarities, Mary understood and appreciated that our differences only made
the world a more interesting place in which to live. The road in Mary's life
was not always easy, however, Mary faced life's many challenges head on and
although Jack was the driver, Mary provided direction and while Jack could
be a boat at sea, Mary was the anchor. Mary was often heard to say 'we are
only passing through'. God Bless dear sweet Mary, mother and friend, on the
next part of your journey. May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be
always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, And until we
meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hand. Thank you to all the
caring staff at the LAB particularly the nursing staff on B3 Lodge. There
will be no service by request. Donations can be made to the Lodge at
Broadmead Foundation if so desired. 231461

McCOLLOM, Virginia Born in Hettick, Illinois on October 2, 1918, died
peacefully at home in Victoria, B.C, Canada on April 4, 2006. She will be
sadly missed by her husband Herbert (Bert) Buchanan. She leaves behind two
children in Laguna Beach and a brother in Denver. She lost her own mother
who died early, Virginia was then raised by her grandparents on the family
farm in Hettick, Illinois. An excellent scholar, she earned her college
education at Milwaukee Downer by writing for the local Wisconsin Newspaper.
Following that she attended The University of Illinois where she obtained
Bachelor and Master of Arts and Science Degrees, in pursuit of a profession
in Geography. At the end of WWII, she was stationed in the British Sector of
Germany at the Port of Bremerhaven where she was awarded a Certificate of
Service by the USA Signal Corps for her efforts. She later moved to Laguna
Beach, CA, and taught Geography at various high schools. She became a world
traveler, visiting all the world's continents. After retiring to Palm
Springs, she volunteered at Shelter from the Storm, a haven for battered
women, where she donated the Library and books. Clients found the books
useful and Virginia was pleased that when they left they often took the
books with them. It was in Palm Springs that she met Bert, a wintering
snowbird from Victoria, at a hotel dinner and dance for singles. Her first
trip to B.C. was to drive to Anacortes, where Bert bought his CAL 29
Sailboat. After joining the R.V.Y. Club's Commodore's Cruise of the San Juan
Islands, Bert and Virginia headed north to places like Princess Louisa's
Inlet and Desolation Sound. When the weather was stormy, Virginia found
sailing quite exciting, but in light winds quite boring. It was then that
she would concentrate on one of her favourite hobbies, knitting the Artist
Kaffe Fassetts intricately patterned wool designs. The cruise lasted three
months, with only one night spent ashore at Port Angeles. Further cruises
followed on larger vessels to places varying from Alaska to Yalta on the
Black Sea. One dry land trip that stands out was a rail trip through the
famous Copper Canyon in Mexico to meet visit the Tarhumara Indians at El
Divisadero Chichuaha. Virginia survived a commercial aircraft belly landing
in South America, but six years ago in Los Angeles, while undergoing
open-heart surgery she suffered two strokes and struggled to learn to walk
again. One of her names should have been Determination. I am proud to have
been a partner in the endeavor, but eventually her heart failed at 87 years
of age. It was Virginia's wish that, with the help of friends and relatives,
her ashes be scattered in some of the places that she visited throughout her
many travels. 231972

WOOLFENDEN, Brian F.R.A.I.C. 23 May, 1930 8 April, 2006 It is with great
sadness that we announce the death of Brian Woolfenden after a short battle
with cancer. Beloved husband and dearest friend to Edna, Yellowpoint;
devoted father to Andrew (Marliss), Vancouver; Rachel (Gary), Edmonton;
special stepfather to Jayne (Rick), Calgary; funloving step-grandfather to
Alison and Jeffrey, Calgary; and unique uncle to nephew Mark and nieces
Clare, Jane and Ann, U.K. Brian was born in Rochdale, Lancashire, U.K. He
was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects in
1954, his many major projects in the U.K. culminating with the design of the
University of Lancaster, 1964/66. In 1966, he emigrated to Edmonton. Brian's
30-year professional career as a consulting architect in Edmonton was
highlighted by several award-winning projects, including the redevelopment
and expansion of the Cross Cancer Institute and the renowned innovative
Heritage Medical Research Building at the University of Alberta. He was a
gentlemen architect: his ethics, honesty, commitment and quiet demeanour
were highly respected by every client, associate and colleague, and indeed
by all. Upon his retirement, he was awarded the honorary title "Fellow of
the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (FRAIC) " by his peers. Brian's
retirement years were happily spent with Edna at Yellowpoint, Vancouver
Island. He had an amazing zest for life and a great sense of humour and will
