CANDEY, Michael Michael passed away peacefully at Nanaimo Hospital on the 21
April 2006 after a long and hard fought struggle against spinal cancer. His
stoic endurance to the pain he suffered over many years was an inspiration
to us all. Mike was born on the 13 February, 1938 in London, England, a
first son to Stanley and Winifred Candey who raised him in a loving family
along with younger brother Jeff. During his formative years, Mike attended
Greenwich Central School and thereafter was employed and trained by Mitchell
Engineering and subsequently G.N. Haden as a mechanical and heating design
engineer. At this time Mike also began to demonstrate exceptional sporting
ability especially at soccer and from 1958 to 1965 played for top senior
amateur teams Harwich, Hendon, Kingstonian and Maidstone. This culminated in
him receiving his greatest honour in being selected to play for England on 7
occasions and for Great Britain in the Olympics of 1964. In Canada Mike's
love for soccer was replaced by his other abiding sporting passion, that of
golf. Here he honed his game down to a 7 handicap and formed many long
lasting friendships at Peace Portal, Point Grey, and Fairwinds golf clubs.
Mike will always be remembered for his keen sporting manner, his sharp sense
of humour even at times of great personal distress, his sense of fairplay
and style, his friendly disposition to everybody that he met, and for his
great love for his family. He is survived by his loving wife Jean, son Tim,
daughter Krista, sonin-law Mark Thodus, beloved grandchildren Cole and Luke
Thodus. Brother Jeff and sister-in-law Christine. The family would like to
give special thanks to the wonderful and compassionate care given to Mike by
all of the staff at the Palliative Care Unit of Nanaimo Hospital whose care
made Mike's last days so comfortable and pain free. Special thanks should
also be given to be Doctors and staff at Vancouver General Hospital and to
all of the many friends and neighbours who have supported Mike and Jean
throughout this sad and distressing time. There will be a Memorial Service
at St. Mary's Church, Powder Point Road, Nanoose Bay at 11 am on Saturday,
April 29th followed by a Reception at the Fairwinds Golf Clubhouse to which
all friends are invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
Oceanside Hospice Society, 210 Crescent Road West, Qualicum Beach, BC, V9K
