BUTTERS, Jacqueline Teresa At 6:05 pm on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 passed a
fine and dignified spirit. Jacqueline Teresa Butters died surrounded by
family at Lion's Gate hospital in her 88th year. Our mother lived her death
as she lived her life; with strength, with pride and with self-possession.
She was predeceased by husband Tommy and survived by five children; Nan,
Lowell, Brian, Ian and Tamara; spouses Giuseppe, Lise, Pamela and Douglas;
grandchildren Jake, Sara, Cameron, Valerie, Lindsay, Lauren, Katja, Liam,
Tessa and Luke and great-grandchildren Christopher and Ethan. Jacquie
Butters was a born and raised resident of British Columbia. Born in
Vancouver in 1918, she spent her childhood living on Dunbar Street before
graduating from UBC in 1942. In her youth, she was a professional singer and
a committed member of Vancouver's artistic community. Married in 1942, she
and Tommy were West Vancouver pioneers in the immediate post-war period,
building a showcase home on Bellevue Avenue before venturing into the
Interior in 1960. They spent several years in Kamloops before Jacquie took
the radical step (for the time and place) of returning to UBC to take a
Master's degree in Education in 1964. This led to a long and rewarding
career as a counsellor at Camosun College before retiring to West Vancouver
in 1988. After her husband's death in 1990, Jacquie devoted a great deal of
energy to her grandchildren, the University Women's Club, the CNIB and the
Catholic Church. She became fully computer literate in her mid-80's and took
great pleasure in staying up to date with the world via the C.B.C. The
family would like to recognize and applaud caregiver Bonnie Munn for all of
her very valuable and much appreciated support of Jacquie over the years. As
well, Jennifer and the other professional and compassionate staff at Lion's
Gate Hospital's Palliative Care Unit made Mother's passing graceful and
comfortable. For this and for all, we are very grateful. Funeral mass will
be held at 11:00am on Monday, May 1 at St. Anthony's Church, 2337 Inglewood
Avenue, West Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian
National Institute for the Blind will be greatly appreciated. 236595

CURTIS, Robert Robert "Bob" Curtis was born on February 4, 1929 in Windy
Nook, County Durham, England. During the Second World War his parents sent
him as a child to live with a family in Welland, Ont. to avoid the bombing.
In the Golden Horseshoe he learned to skate and play ice hockey, a game he
would later pursue as an amateur into his late 60s. At the end of the war he
returned to England, where he trained as a mechanical engineer. An avid
hiker and cyclist, he met his beautiful wife Joan also a keen rambler at a
holiday centre at Loch Leven in the Scottish Highlands. It was a romance
that led to a marriage lasting 54 years. During his national service in the
merchant navy he saw the world, working for Cunard and the New Zealand
Shipping Company, among other shipping lines. He progressed through the
ranks to become a chief engineer. He later switched to aircraft engine
engineering, joining Rolls Royce in Derby at a time when computers started
revolutionizing the industry. He jumped at an opportunity to return to
Canada in 1966, when Pratt & Whitney offered him a job as a test engineer in
Montreal. He later joined a group of highly specialized engineers who opened
Pratt & Whitney's test facility near Toronto before taking early retirement
at age 62. He took up skiing, was a strong swimmer and loved nature. He and
Joan traveled extensively and put a family of three through university. They
retired to Victoria in 1995, where they reveled in frequent rambles to their
beloved Witty's Lagoon and other regional parks. Although he returned to
England and visited Switzerland during retirement years, after all his
travels Victoria was the place that most felt like home. Bob died on Sunday,
April 23, 2006 at the Victoria Hospice after a courageous battle with
cancer. His wife Joan and their children Malcolm, Susan and Alison, son
in-law Neill, and granddaughter Cosima survive him, as well as nephew David
Curtis and niece Ann Foakes, both in England. A private memorial is planned.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Victoria Hospice Society would be
appreciated. 235968

TOWNSON, Douglas Edmund Townson, Douglas Edmund Born November 14, 1921 in
Edmonton, Alberta, lived in Victoria most of his adult life and died
unexpectedly, at the age of 85, after a brief illness on Easter Sunday,
April 16, 2006 while in Dunster, BC. He was predeceased by his wife of 50
years Roberta in 1996, who he met while billeted at her parent's home while
stationed in Belfast immediately after WW2. He leaves 4 sons, John Edmund in
Vancouver, Martin in Victoria, Danny (Vicki) in Grande Prairie and Brian
(Shelley) in Edmonton, 3 adult grandsons (Gordon, Sean, and Nicholas), as
well as his companion of the last several years, Audrey Fraser in Dunster.
Douglas served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the 2nd World War and
received several decorations for bravery and other actions, about which he
was very modest, rarely speaking about the events concerned. He continued
his career in the Navy, working in recruitment and communications, etc.
until mandatory retirement, followed by 10 years as an inside worker for
Canada Post and finally as a supervisor at Tillicum Lodge for the BC
Provincial Government, before permanently retiring in 1986. He led an active
life in retirement, keeping in touch with many of the men he had served with
in the war and after, actively gardening and improving his home by
constantly working on it. He read a great deal, both fiction and histories,
and was always working in his home workshop, pursuing his love of
woodworking and handicrafts, creating things simply for the joy of doing so.
He will be remembered by his children as a generous father who always loved
and supported his family. Though he leaves behind a diminished number of
contemporaries, his generous, friendly nature and never-failing willingness
to help attracted many younger friends. He will be sorely missed by both
family and friends. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations appreciated to
the BC Lung Association, British Columbia Lung Association, 2675 Oak Street,
Vancouver, B.C. V6H 2K2 or www.bc.lung.ca . A short commemoration of
Douglas' life was held in Dunster on Saturday, April 22. A Memorial Service
and celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 24,
2006 at the Royal Oak First Memorial Funeral Services of BC, 4725 Falaise
Drive, Victoria BC. In the world of existence there is no more powerful
magnet than the magnet of love. 236773
