BALLAM, Edith Dede" Frances (nee Dent) Born January 3rd, 1922, died suddenly
Friday, June 2nd, 2006. Dede always like to say that she dated a Corporal in
the army, married a Lieutenant, gave birth to her first child fathered by a
Captain, gave birth to her next two children fathered by a student, and her
last two children fathered by a doctor. Widowed in 1987 from Corporal/
Lieutenant/ Captain/ Dr. Charles F. Ballam, she decided that the armed
forces had done her well" the first time around so she went on to remarry,
at the age of 74, an ex-Airforce man with whom she has lived happily for the
last 13 years. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband Al Lukinuk and
her own small army of 5 children and in-laws, Gail Waterman (Ron), Gordon
(Joni), Debi (Mark), Doug (Corinne) and Patty Ballam (Mark), grandchildren,
great grandchildren, brother Errol Dent (Edie), brotherin-law Phil (Grace),
cousins, nieces, nephews, step children Steve, David (Andrea) and Sandy
Lukinuk and many wonderful friends. She will be fondly remembered for her
love of life, sense of humour, love of travel, sense of fashion, her busy
hands, her love of family, her flare and her sparkle. The memorial service
for Dede will be held at First Memorial, 4725 Falaise Dr., Friday, June 9th
at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honour to
Hospice, UBC Faculty of Medicine, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. 253252

BELL, Nadine Alexandra March 7, 1922 June 2, 2006 Loving wife, mother,
grandmother and friend, Nadine "Mimi" passed away peacefully early in the
morning of June 2, 2006, at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Survived by her
husband of 58 years, John Bell, Wing Commander, RCAF (retired), sons Gordon
(Ilona), Richard (Lannea), Jim (Colleen) and daughter Diane, as well as
grandchildren Jon, Scott, Tricia, Ricky, Dylan and Emily. Nadine was also a
"Mother Tigress" to all the: 439 Fighter Squadron pilots. A celebration of
her life will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, June 8, 2006, at First
Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 FaIaise Drive, in Victoria. A reception will
be held at 806 Sea Ridge Place after the service. Many thanks to all of
Nadine's caring neighbours and friends. Grateful thanks also to Dr. Neil
Boyle and the 2 Royal Staff, Royal Jubilee Hospital, for their loving care

BENEDEK, Allana Hughena, Augurst 20, 1936 June 04, 2006 After a long and
courageous battle with cancer, Allana was taken in the grace of God. Born in
Inverness, Cape Brenton. She was always torn between the two coasts.
Predeceased by both her parents. She traveled often back east where she
enjoyed music and dancing. Back on the west coast she took part in a variety
of activities, swimming at the river and lake tending to her beautiful
roses. Her love for education was apparent even before she received a B.A.
from Mt. St. Vincent and a B. Ed. from Dalhousie. She then spread her joy by
traveling into the Northwest Territories where she met her husband of 46
years William Benedek and taught for 3 years. Her adventurous spirit is also
survived by her sister Donalda MacLeod, (Quebec), Allana and Bill's five
children William Jr., Kristin (Gerry), Megan (Andy), Brent, Ariane (Doug).
One grandchild Lyndsay (Brian) and many more friends and relatives on both
the east and west coast. We thank you all including the incredible home
support staff for your help and invite you to attend a service in Allana's
honor at St. Edwards Church in Duncan on Friday, June 9th at 11:00am. A
casual BBQ at the residence on Saturday June 10th. Please save the last

BUTTERFIELD-RUSCONI, Joy Peacefully on June 5, 2006, as a result of injuries
sustained in a car accident in India on March 30, which also caused the
death of her husband, Stefano Rusconi. Survived by her parents, James and
Sybil; her son Marco and daughter Sarah; members of the Rusconi family in
Italy; her brothers Christopher (Merrie-Ellen), Philip (Tracy), Peter
(Sarah), Benjamin (Anne) and their children. Joy will be sadly missed by all
who knew and loved her. A Celebration of Joy's life will be held at Christ
Church Cathedral, Quadra & Rockland Streets, Victoria, on Thursday, June 8,

CARLSEN, Gerner "GarMan" October 7, 1952 June 7, 2005 Father, son and best
friend. A year has passed and it still seems unreal. The pain still cuts
deep, but we're vikings and we'll carry on. We'll be ok but miss you
freaking BIGTIME! We love you and can't stand not having you here with us.
Hope your building some decent hot rods up there! Throwing you a kiss and

DUPUIS, Madeleine Theresa Madeline died on Monday, June 5, 2006 in Victoria.
She was born in Montreal, Quebec, the daughter of Albert R. Desautels and
Dora (Pittsley) Desautels. For the latter part of her life, she resided in
Victoria. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Joseph Dupuis, her
sister, Norma Martineau, and is survived by her son, Norman Dupuis; her
daughter, Lori Whipps; son-in-law, Murray Whipps; her grandchildren, Kevin
and Kara Whipps; her sister, Frances DeRoche and brother-in-law, Arthur
DeRoche. A funeral service will be held at St. Patricks Catholic Church on
Haultain Street near Foul Bay Road on Friday, June 9 at 12:10 P.M. with

ESPIN, George William Born in Winnipeg, September 1, 1929, died peacefully
in his sleep on May 30, 2006. He is survived by his sons, Geoffrey and
Barry, their families, and his former wife Marion. A medic in the RCN for 25
years, George then spent another 20 years losing mail for the post office.
Always a music lover, he sang in many choirs, including the Victoria Choral
Society, Arion and various churches. He was an active member of St. John's
Anglican Church, and started their Emergency Food Bank. He was a long time
driver for Meals on Wheels. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St.
John's Emergency Food Bank or Doctors Without Borders. A memorial service
will be held at St. John the Divine (Quadra & Balmoral) on Thursday, June

HAGEN, Gordon Terrence Born on August 12, 1916 in Louis Head, Nova Scotia
and died on June 3, 2006 in Victoria, BC. Gordon was predeceased by his wife
of 53 years, Dolly Hagen; son Barry Hagen and grandson Staecy Hagen. He is
survived by his two sons Bruce and Derek (Margie) and extended family.
Gordon will be fondly remembered by many teachers and students from his 36
years in education. A funeral service will be held on June 8, 2006 at 11:00
am at First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 4725 Falaise Drive with burial to
follow at Royal Oak Burial Park. 254106

HOLLAND, Alexander James Suddenly on June 2nd at 75 years Alex's journey
through life ended. This soft spoken gentle man is survived by his loving
and devoted daughter Cheryl, sons Ken (Marlene), Gary and Russ. Brothers &
sisters Owen, George, Evelyn, MaryJane and families. Grandsons Matthew
(Little Buddy) and Owen. Granddaughters Jacquie and Heather. Long time

JACKSON, Geoffrey Clifford August 1, 1928 June 3, 2006 Passed away
peacefully at Victoria General Hospital in his 78th year. He is survived by
his loving wife of fifty three years, Daphne, three sons Andrew (Nola), Mark
(Jane) and Tim (Marie) and grandchildren Brett, Laura, Katie, Megan, Sara,
Paul, Jenny and Chris. Geoff was born in Leeds, England and obtained a BA
degree in Education and Geography from Leeds University, then joined the
R.A.F. as an Education Officer in 1950. Geoff and Daphne met in Bath,
England and shortly after they were married, Geoff was posted in Malta,
where Andrew and Mark were born. After returning to England and eventually
leaving the R.A.F., Geoff, Daphne and their young family emigrated to
Alberta and lived in Lacombe, Alberta where Tim was born. Geoff studied at
the University of Alberta and obtained a further degree in Education. He was
Principal of Clive Elementary School, Alberta from 1960 until 1967, at which
time the family moved to Duncan where Geoff taught at Mt. Prevost High
School and was Principal at several Elementary Schools in the Cowichan
Valley. After his retirement in 1988, Geoff and Daphne enjoyed traveling to
many foreign destinations. In his University days, Geoff cycled across
France, a tale which was recounted at many a family gathering. He enjoyed
the study of different languages, was able to speak French fluently and
could communicate in several other languages. Geoff's love of music kept him
busy playing the clarinet with various groups and orchestras from the time
he spent with the Leeds Symphony as a young man until recently in Victoria
and the Cowichan Valley. Geoff also enjoyed sailing in local waters for many
years. If you wish, a donation may be made in Geoff's memory to the Canadian
Cancer Society. A private gathering will be held at a later date. 253451

JACKSON, John William (Bill) 1916 2006 Born in Cardston, Alberta passed away
June 4, 2006 at home in Cowichan Bay, BC. Predeceased by his first wife
Irene (Bunty). Bill will be lovingly remembered by his son David, daughters;
Dianne, Sally, Deborah, Barbara and their families and his wife Leonora.
Bill was a super carpenter, boat builder and artist. He greatly appreciated
so much all the Lords creations. There will be a service held Saturday, June

LETNES, Gordon Martin Peacefully on June 2, 2006 in his 89th year. Beloved
husband of Norah Gwynneth; father of Della Letnes (Michael) of Edmonton; two
sisters, Phyllis Kmet of Dawson Creek and Norma Case of Kamloops;
brother-in-law, Harold Ridgway (Gail) of Cache Creek and a large extended
family. He will be greatly missed by all. Born in Prince Rupert, B.C. on
October 28, 1917 to Norwegian immigrants and raised in Port Essington, on
the mighty Skeena River. Gordon served seven years with the 167th Battery,
Artillery and saw action in the European Theatre, settling in Victoria when
the War ended. Gordon was an entertainer and his love of harmonica thrilled
many. He was a proud Member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and
Joiners, Local 1598 for 50 years and the Trafalgar/ Pro Patria Branch No.
292, Royal Canadian Legion for 30 years. A Celebration of his life will be
held in MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets, on
Friday, June 9th at 10:30 a.m. followed by a reception in the Graham and
Torrey McCall Family Centre. Flowers are gratefully declined; tributes, if

MCKEOWN, Frederick Thomas Born on November 10, 1928 in Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan. Passed away peacefully at Royal Jubilee Hospital on June 1,
2006. Predeceased by his 2 brothers, Sidney and Robert. Lovingly remembered
by his wife of 54 years, Verle; brothers, Jack and Richard (Joan); sister,
Edith Laplante as well as many nieces and nephews. He was a member of the
Victoria Curling Club and Gorge Vail Golf Club for many years. Fred was a
firefighter in Saskatoon, Kemano, Kitimat, Alcan Smelter and DND Fire
Department, Victoria and retired as Deputy Fire Chief. He was also a member
of Gizeh Temple, Masonic Lodge and Victoria Shrine. The family wish to thank
the nurses and doctors at Royal Jubilee Hospital for their care. Private
family service will be held. A Remembrance Tea will be held at SEQUOIA
GARDENS MEMORIAL, 4665 Falaise Drive on Thursday, June 8, 2006 from 1:00 pm

MENU, Jeannette Frances Passed away suddenly on June 1, 2006. Born in St.
John's, Newfoundland on December 19, 1929, the 8th child of Henry and
Jeanette Foster. Predeceased by her husband Marcel and siblings Jack,
Phyllis, Ollie (Chris), Nina, Helen, Adrian and Harry. Left with fond
memories are her children, Janet (Darren), Marc (Kathy), Cathay (Cliff),
Lisa (Paul), Paul (Jen), Mona (AI) and her brother and sisters Alex Foster,
Sheila Whalen, of St John's and Stella Hyder of N.C.; and grandkids Cameron,
Alicia, Tyler, Calvin, Courtney, Aysa, Jake, Camille, Dustin, Mason and
Maria; also her very special nephew Brian Moodie (Joan, Lori, Darren).
Jeannie was full of love and we will all long to see and hear her throw out
her arms and shout, "I loves yous all"! We loves you too Jeannie! Service
will be held at the First Memorial Funeral Home, 4725 Falaise Drive, Royal
Oak on Saturday, June 10, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a celebration of her

MILLS, Jean C. 91, formerly of Medicine Hat, Alberta and most recently of
Victoria, B. C., died June 6, 2006. She was the widow of John Huey Mills.
Born March 4, 1915 near Perth, Australia, she was a daughter of the late
George and Janet (Mitchell) Henderson. She and her family immigrated to
Canada in 1927 and settled in Brandon, Manitoba. In 1944, she moved to
Medicine Hat with her husband and sons and was a resident of Medicine Hat
for 39 years. She had resided in Victoria, B. C. for the past 22 years.
Survivors include two sons, William G. Mills of Farmington, Connecticut and
John H. Mills of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Jennifer
B. Mills, John H. Mills III, George B. Mills, and Ramsey M. Mills; two
great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Harold McCrae
of Winnipeg; a sister-in-law, Donna Henderson of Winnipeg; and several
nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Katie
Mills, and three brothers, James Henderson, Archibald Henderson, and George
Henderson. Contributions in Mrs. Mills' memory may be made to the
organization or charity of one's choice. Written expressions of sympathy may

MORRISS, Bernadette (Pollard) Born in Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan on April 21,
1921. Passed away peacefully on June 3, 2006. She moved to Trail as a young
adult and trained as a secretary at the Trail Business School, then worked
at Cominco and a few years later moved to Victoria with family members where
she worked for the Navy and Mac and Macs and met her future husband Victor.
Bernie was predeceased by Victor in 1991 and son Ron, in 1972. She is
survived by; daughters, Sheila (Paul) and Teresa (Les); son, Alan (Susan);
grandchildren, Ron, Neil, Shawn (Amber), Jillian, Kyle and Spencer; brother,
Ernest Pollard (Mary) and many special nieces, nephews and extended
families. An avid hockey and softball player as a youngster, Bernie kept her
interest in sports up as a keen Canucks supporter and an active member of
the Victoria Curling Club. She was a devoted member of St. Patrick's Church
and an active member of the CWL. It is here where she made many wonderful
friends over the years who will greatly miss her. Special thanks to Dr.
Smith and the caring nurses on the Neuroscience Ward at Victoria General
Hospital. Your care and words of encouragement were deeply appreciated. "We
will miss your soft hugs, your warm smile, quirky humour and Saturday and

MOZOL, Ursula Ursula Mozol, widow of Stan Mozol passed away peacefully on
May 2, 2006 at the age of 79 in Calgary, AB at the home of her daughter. She

POLLARD, Trevor William Passed away peacefully on June 2, 2006 in Victoria.
Survived by his loving wife Beryl of 63 years, sister Lorrie, children
Cheryl, Garth, Greg and Grant, grandchildren Brett, Bonnie, Rorie, Taylor,
Carson, Adam and Kaeleigh, and greatgrandchildren Maya, Jade, Justin and
Jesse. Trevor was a flight instructor in Calgary during WWII, then in sales
with Purvis Rithie, Wajax and manager of Logan Mayhew and Heede Int. before
purchasing and operating Wilcuma Resort for 8 years. He then owned the
charter boat Bonnie Seas at the Bay Shore for 12 years. Retiring in 1993 to
Victoria, Mesa Arizona and his cabin at Rail Lake, where he enjoyed the
outdoors and hunting. He was also an avid boater and cruised the B.C. coast
in his six different yachts. A celebration of Trev's life will be held June

is survived by Bill, her loving husband of 60 years; her son, Ralph of
Vancouver and her extended family. Iris was a Hairdresser for many years and

SIMPSON, Agnes Sylvia October 28, 1914 June 3, 2006 Agnes Sylvia Simpson
died peacefully at home on her farm surrounded by her family. She was
predeceased by her husband Jack, sister Violet, and brothers Aubrey, Tom and
Laurie. Agnes is survived by her sister Margaret, her sons Peter (Margaret)
of Brentwood Bay, John (Joan) of Delta, and her grandchildren Christopher
(Stacey), Darryl (Tanya), Julia (Curt) and Laura, as well as great
grandchildren Sylvia, Nicholas and Jeremy. Agnes was born in Lee,
Massachusetts and lived in Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula. She was
passionate and knowledgeable about her horses and dogs and she loved
boating, an interest she shared with Jack and her family and for many years
cruised the waters of the B.C. Coast. Both were active members of the
Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (Saanich Peninsula Squadron) and Agnes was
recently awarded her 20 years service/ lifetime membership award for her
service to the Squadron. Her family and friends will miss her. The family
wishes to thank all the staff at Saanich Peninsula Hospital, Community
Health and Beacon Home Support for their caring and support. Service will be
held at St. Stephen's Church, 7921 St. Stephen's Road, Saanichton on Friday,

SMELSER, Rodney Elmere August 23, 1919 May 28, 2006 It is with sadness that
we say goodbye to our brother and friend, Rod E. Smelser. After serving in
the Army in Europe during WWII, Rod became a marine engineer for many years,
ending his career at Naden in Esquimalt. Rod came from a family of twelve.
He is survived by four of his siblings, Verlie Elvedahl, Mabel Atsinger,
Vergne Smelser, and Irish Smelser and his friend, Bunny McKinnon. He spent
many an hour at the Esquimalt Silver Threads playing carpet bowling and
cards. He was a deep thinker and although short on words he was loved by
those who knew him. Family and friends please join us on Wednesday, June 14,
2pm at First Memorial Service and Tea, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, RSVP

SPENCER, John R.C. (Squadron Leader, RAF Retired) After a long illness
bravely born, John passed away on Friday, June 2, 2006. Born in Kent,
England on May 17, 1924 and educated at Brighton College and later at
Loughborough College where John obtained his degree in Electrical
Engineering. He was an active Senior Electronics Engineer in the RAF until
he retired in 1973. In 1989 he immigrated to Canada and settled in Oak Bay
where he was a volunteer with the PEP Program. John is survived by his
sister, Jean (Les) Benson and his life-long friend, Mildred Boyer. A private
