BAKER, Kevin Mitchell May 20, 1961 June 5, 1981 It's been 25 years now, and
we still have you in our hearts and thoughts daily. We will love you

BALLAM, Edith Dede" Frances (nee Dent) Born January 3rd, 1922, died suddenly
Friday, June 2nd, 2006. Dede always like to say that she dated a Corporal in
the army, married a Lieutenant, gave birth to her first child fathered by a
Captain, gave birth to her next two children fathered by a student, and her
last two children fathered by a doctor. Widowed in 1987 from Corporal/
Lieutenant/ Captain/ Dr. Charles F. Ballam, she decided that the armed
forces had done her well" the first time around so she went on to remarry,
at the age of 74, an ex-Airforce man with whom she has lived happily for the
last 13 years. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband Al Lukinuk and
her own small army of 5 children and in-laws, Gail Waterman (Ron), Gordon
(Joni), Debi (Mark), Doug (Corinne) and Patty Ballam (Mark), grandchildren,
great grandchildren, brother Errol Dent (Edie), brotherin-law Phil (Grace),
cousins, nieces, nephews, step children Steve, David (Andrea) and Sandy
Lukinuk and many wonderful friends. She will be fondly remembered for her
love of life, sense of humour, love of travel, sense of fashion, her busy
hands, her love of family, her flare and her sparkle. The memorial service
for Dede will be held at First Memorial, 4725 Falaise Dr., Friday, June 9th
at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honour to

BELL, Nadine Alexandra March 7, 1922 June 2, 2006 Loving wife, mother,
grandmother and friend, Nadine "Mimi" passed away peacefully early in the
morning of June 2, 2006, at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Survived by her
husband of 58 years, John Bell, Wing Commander, RCAF (retired), sons Gordon
(Ilona), Richard (Lannea), Jim (Colleen) and daughter Diane, as well as
grandchildren Jon, Scott, Tricia, Ricky, Dylan and Emily. Nadine was also a
"Mother Tigress" to all the: 439 Fighter Squadron pilots. A celebration of
her life will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, June 8, 2006, at First
Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 FaIaise Drive, in Victoria. A reception will
be held at 806 Sea Ridge Place after the service. Many thanks to all of
Nadine's caring neighbours and friends. Grateful thanks also to Dr. Neil
Boyle and the 2 Royal Staff, Royal Jubilee Hospital, for their loving care

BEST, William (Bill) James It is with great sadness that we announce the
passing of William (Bill) James Best on May 31, 2006. Born in Victoria on
April 16, 1927 to Bessie Sturgeon and James Best, both deceased. Father,
husband, brother, grandpa and great grandpa, Bill leaves behind his loving
wife Gladys, sister Ivy (Dave), daughters Deborah (Lue), Christine (Luc) and
Cheryl (Don) and son Terry. Grandchildren Cindy, K.C., Bobby, Michael,
Sandra, Wyatt and Dana and 7 great grandchildren. An excellent fisherman,
many happy hours of his early life were spent at the Oak Bay Marina, and
more recently as a regular at the Marina coffee shop with the boys". Bill
worked as a cement truck driver and plant operator at Ocean Cement for 45
years. A heart felt thanks to Dr. Lockhurst, family physician and friend, as
well as the caring staff in the CCU at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Flowers

BOOKER, Helen May 1922 2006 Helen Booker passed away on Tuesday, May 30th,
2006 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Comox B.C. She was predeceased by her
husband Walter Frederick (Wallie) on January 26th, 2003. Helen is survived
by her sons; Frederick (Shawna) of Tumbler Ridge, B.C. and Wayne (Donna) of
Oyster River, B.C. her daughter Brenda (Bob) Letendre of St. Albert,
Alberta, her grandchildren; Leslie (Mike) of Vernon, Scott (Lisa) of
Germany, Lareina (Trev) of St. Albert, Trevis of Prince George and Krystle
of Victoria as well as her great grandchildren; Tia and Jessa of Vernon,
Ayden and Holly of Germany and Mason and Elleson of St. Albert. Helen served
overseas with the CWAC during World War II from 1941 to 1945 and after
returning home she took care of her family and raised her children. In her
leisure time she enjoyed gardening, knitting and her chickens. A Service of
Remembrance in celebration of her life will take place at 1:00 P.M. on
Thursday, June 8th, 2006 from COMOX VALLEY FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORIUM, 1101

CAMERON, Major Jean Mildred The Salvation Army "R" Promoted to Glory from
York Central Hospital on Tuesday, May 30, 2006, in her 65th year. Major
Jean, beloved daughter of the late William (Max) and Mildred Chalk. Loving
wife of the late Major Jack Cameron. Dear mother of Catherine (Mrs. Graham
Larkan) and Brian. Also survived by her grandchildren Taylor, Lauren and
Robyn. Will be sadly missed by her brother Carl and his wife Barbara along

DONALDSON, Arthur It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of
Arthur (Art) Donaldson on June 1, 2006. Born in Trail, B.C. on August 16,
1925. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years Dagmar, his two
sons David (Sharon), Richard (Bobbi). His grandson Brett (Lacey),
great-grandson Kobe and his sister Jean. He was predeceased by his brother
Harry. Art spent his early years living on the Rossland Trail Golf Course.
Following a tour of duty in the military during World War II he completed
his apprenticeship as a boilermaker. Art began his professional career as
golf professional in 1948 at the Kimberly Golf Club. Then as Pro-Manager at
the Earl Grey Golf Course in Calgary, Alberta. Art was a well-known golf
professional and superintendent having worked at Gorge Vale Golf Club,
Capilano Golf & Country Club and then the Chemainus Golf Club. Until the
time of his death he was a member (retired) of the Golf Course
Superintendent's of America winning their 1968 Championship in Monterey,
California. He was the 1960 Vancouver Island Open Golf champion. He was also
a member of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. The happiest years of his
life were the fourteen years he spent as a starter on the first tee of the
Fairwinds Golf Course. His passion was golf followed closely by fishing! A
memorial service will be held at Fairwinds Golf Club in Nanoose Bay, BC on
June 8 at 1:00PM. 253218

HAGGLUND, Laura Mae December 10, 1908 May 31, 2006 Laura Mae Hagglund (nee
Bohn) died peacefully at Glengarry Hospital on May 31, 2006 surrounded by
love and her family. She was predeceased by her husband George in 1986. She
was also predeceased by her sister Agnes Martyn and brothers Louis, John,
Walter, and Edward. Laura leaves to mourn, with love and great memories, her
daughters, Donna Cole of Langley, Lyn Hagglund of Burnaby, Lee Drummond
(Paul) of Victoria and her granddaughters, Kellee Cole, Kwyn Drummond, and
Kylie Ferguson (Jesse); and most importantly her beloved
great-granddaughters, Tate and Faris Ferguson who were the "light of her
life". She also leaves behind her sisters-inlaw Florence Bohn (Saskatchewan)
and Evelyn Lloyd (California) as well as numerous nieces, nephews and
friends. Laura was born in Melfort, Saskatchewan but was raised nearby in
Beatty where she met George. They were married in 1933. Together they worked
the family farm and the Hagglund Hardware business until their move to
Victoria in 1956. During her time in Beatty she was very active in the
United Church and was the first woman from Saskatchewan to be elected to the
Board of World Mission. Laura was passionate about her family, her friends,
her church and her garden. She delighted in time spent with family and both
in Saskatchewan and Victoria she developed a network of valued lifelong
friends. She will be remembered for her extremely generous and hospitable
nature. Many relatives and friends have stayed at the "Hagglund Hotel" in
Victoria over the years. In Victoria her compassion and humanity was notable
with much time given to volunteer work in church and community
organizations: She was always there to lend a hand to anyone in need. Laura
was a long time and very active member of First Metropolitan United Church
where she took on many leadership roles over the years. She was a Life
Member of the United Church Women, Chair of the Victoria CGIT Council,
founding member of the Victoria Ecumenical Outreach, and a member of the
Citizenship Council, Community Arts Council and Victoria Presbytery to name
a few. Laura spent many happy hours working in her garden and only a stroke
at 96 years brought that to an end. She was an accomplished painter and an
enthusiastic traveller having RVed across North America and taken trips to
Europe, Great Britian, Israel, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii.
Laura will be truly missed by all those whose lives she touched. The family
would like to thank Dr. R. Nuttall, the staff of 7C and 5A at Victoria
General Hospital and the staff of Glengarry Hospital for their kind and
compassionate care of our mom. Laura's family invites you to join them in a
celebration of her life at First Metropolitan United Church on Thursday June
8, 2006 at 1 pm. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Internment
of Laura's ashes will take place at a later date in the family plot in

HANSEN, Melville Birger Born September 24, 1914. Passed peacefully on June
4, 2006 at Mount St. Mary's in Victoria in his 92nd year. Mel was
predeceased by his beloved wife of 48 years, Betty, in 1990 and his brother,
Harris, in 1993. In 1995 he met Rose Johnson. He spent 10 very happy years
with her and enjoyed her large and hospitable family. He will be remembered
for his dry sense of humour, his acumen at tennis and squash, his love of
dancing, music, and travelling, and his devotion to family. In later years,
he achieved his dream of visiting all seven continents. He and Betty spent
two wonderful years in Kabwe, Zambia where he was Chief Engineer for Zambian
Railways, visiting Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, the Seychelles, Mauritius, and
South Africa. They spent 11 lovely years gardening and socializing on the
lush slopes of Dean Park in Sidney. Mel is survived by his three children:
Laura Fairbairn (Doug), London ON; David (Donna); and Pamela (Charles
Steele), North Vancouver and grandchildren Jennifer, Julie, Greg, Janice,
Steven, Brendan and Michaela. Mel's family would like to thank the caring
staff at Mount St. Mary's. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church
Cathedral, Quadra at Rockland, on Wednesday, June 7 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of

HOLLAND, Alexander James Suddenly on June 2nd at 75 years Alex's journey
through life ended. This soft spoken gentle man is survived by his loving
and devoted daughter Cheryl, sons Ken (Marlene), Gary and Russ. Brothers &
sisters Owen, George, Evelyn, MaryJane and families. Grandsons Matthew
(Little Buddy) and Owen. Granddaughters Jacquie and Heather. Long time
friend and caring ex wife Lilian. Good friend Brian and numerous friends at

JACKSON, Geoffrey Clifford August 1, 1928 June 3, 2006 Passed away
peacefully at Victoria General Hospital in his 78th year. He is survived by
his loving wife of fifty three years, Daphne, three sons Andrew (Nola), Mark
(Jane) and Tim (Marie) and grandchildren Brett, Laura, Katie, Megan, Sara,
Paul, Jenny and Chris. Geoff was born in Leeds, England and obtained a BA
degree in Education and Geography from Leeds University, then joined the
R.A.F. as an Education Officer in 1950. Geoff and Daphne met in Bath,
England and shortly after they were married, Geoff was posted in Malta,
where Andrew and Mark were born. After returning to England and eventually
leaving the R.A.F., Geoff, Daphne and their young family emigrated to
Alberta and lived in Lacombe, Alberta where Tim was born. Geoff studied at
the University of Alberta and obtained a further degree in Education. He was
Principal of Clive Elementary School, Alberta from 1960 until 1967, at which
time the family moved to Duncan where Geoff taught at Mt. Prevost High
School and was Principal at several Elementary Schools in the Cowichan
Valley. After his retirement in 1988, Geoff and Daphne enjoyed traveling to
many foreign destinations. In his University days, Geoff cycled across
France, a tale which was recounted at many a family gathering. He enjoyed
the study of different languages, was able to speak French fluently and
could communicate in several other languages. Geoff's love of music kept him
busy playing the clarinet with various groups and orchestras from the time
he spent with the Leeds Symphony as a young man until recently in Victoria
and the Cowichan Valley. Geoff also enjoyed sailing in local waters for many
years. If you wish, a donation may be made in Geoff's memory to the Canadian
Cancer Society. A private gathering will be held at a later date. 253451

JACKSON, John William (Bill) 1916 2006 Born in Cardston, Alberta passed away
June 4, 2006 at home in Cowichan Bay, BC. Predeceased by his first wife
Irene (Bunty). Bill will be lovingly remembered by his son David, daughters;
Dianne, Sally, Deborah, Barbara and their families and his wife Leonora.
Bill was a super carpenter, boat builder and artist. He greatly appreciated
so much all the Lords creations. There will be a service held Saturday, June
10, 1:00pm at Cobble Hill Baptist Church. 253551

KEGEL, Ottomar September 29, 1916 May 23rd, 2006 Passed away peacefully at
the Priory in Langford, B.C. on Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006 aged 89 years.
Ottomar is survived by his wife Marie-Elisabeth, their daughter, Christine
and their son Michael, as well as their grandchildren Caitlin, Silke and
Katharina. He will be fondly remembered by his many friends and family
members. Heartfelt thanks go to the wonderful Home Support Team and the
staff at the Glengarry and Priory Care Homes for their loving help and care
and to Dr. Dan O'Connell for his kind and understanding support. A memorial
service was held on June 1st at the Sands Funeral Chapel in Colwood by

MCKEOWN, Frederick Thomas Born on November 10, 1928 in Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan. Passed away peacefully at Royal Jubilee Hospital on June 1,
2006. Predeceased by his 2 brothers, Sidney and Robert. Lovingly remembered
by his wife of 54 years, Verle; brothers, Jack and Richard (Joan); sister,
Edith Laplante as well as many nieces and nephews. He was a member of the
Victoria Curling Club and Gorge Vail Golf Club for many years. Fred was a
firefighter in Saskatoon, Kemano, Kitimat, Alcan Smelter and DND Fire
Department, Victoria and retired as Deputy Fire Chief. He was also a member
of Gizeh Temple, Masonic Lodge and Victoria Shrine. The family wish to thank
the nurses and doctors at Royal Jubilee Hospital for their care. Private
family service will be held. A Remembrance Tea will be held at SEQUOIA
GARDENS MEMORIAL, 4665 Falaise Drive on Thursday, June 8, 2006 from 1:00 pm

METHERELL, Marjorie Passed away at Chemainus Health Care Centre on June 4,
2006. Marjorie was born in 1924 in north eastern Quebec (nee MacDougald).
She leaves behind her husband Charles; sons Ian (Linda), and Alan; and
sister Evelyn. Marjorie was active in the community of Chemainus. She was a
life member of the Legion Auxiliary of Br. 191. She served diligently in the
Anglican Church Women and Rotary Club functions and as a past Regent of the
IODE. Marjorie will be interred in the Chemainus cemetery followed by a
memorial service at St. Michael & All Angels Church on Thursday, June 8,
2006 at 1:30 p.m. A tea in the Church Hall will be held after the service. A
special thank you goes out to the wonderful staff at both the Oceanview Care
Home in Crofton and the Chemainus Health Care Centre during her long battle

MONTGOMERY, Matt 1962 2006 Matt, our beloved son and brother passed away
suddenly on April 5, 2006. He leaves to mourn his mother & father, Lorraine
& Larry, brothers Chris & Malcolm, daughter Mikhaila, relatives and many

RIPPON, Albert Bernard Born June 23, 1919, Al passed away peacefully on June
3, 2006 after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by Jean, his
beloved wife of almost 65 years, brother Tom, son Bob, daughters Lynne
(Fred) and Barb (Greg), and grandchildren, Shawn and Tara. He will be
lovingly remembered for his sense of humour and generous spirit. The family
wishes to thank the caring staff and volunteers of the Palliative Care Unit

ROBERTSON, (Buck) Hugh McDonald 1938 2006 Buck passed away at St. Joseph's
Hospital, Comox, BC on the 01 of June 2006 after a long uphill battle with
diabetes. He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy; stepchildren, Ken and
Christine and 5 step grandchildren; sisters: Barbara Robertson, Patricia
Goble, Janice (Patrick) McKay and extended family members. His father,
Wilfred M. Robertson in 1985 and his mother Florence Aileen Robertson in
1987, as well as his brother-in-law, Ben Goble predeceased him. He was born
in Vernon, B.C. and shortly thereafter the family moved to Ocean Falls, BC.
Buck wanted to see the world so he joined the Royal Canadian Navy. His
chosen profession was Naval Air as an AESO (Observers Mate). He retired from
the Navy as a CP02 in 1983 to pursue a second career in the civilian
workforce as a cabinetmaker and then the City of Courtenay as a guard for
the RCMP until he retired in 2002 for medical reasons. Buck was a member of
the Courtenay Legion and CNAG, he enjoyed the outdoors (hunting and fishing)
and was a past member of the Rod and Gun Club. A Celebration of Buck's life
(Poppy Service) will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 17,
367 Cliffe Ave, Courtenay, BC on Thursday, 08 June at 1400 hours (2PM). In

SMELSER, Rodney Elmere August 23, 1919 May 28, 2006 It is with sadness that
we say goodbye to our brother and friend, Rod E. Smelser. After serving in
the Army in Europe during WWII, Rod became a marine engineer for many years,
ending his career at Naden in Esquimalt. Rod came from a family of twelve.
He is survived by four of his siblings, Verlie Elvedahl, Mabel Atsinger,
Vergne Smelser, and Irish Smelser and his friend, Bunny McKinnon. He spent
many an hour at the Esquimalt Silver Threads playing carpet bowling and
cards. He was a deep thinker and although short on words he was loved by

SMYLIE, Joyce Eileen (nee Blunt) Joyce died June 2, 2006 at the age of 83.
Born on 10th Avenue in Courtenay on June 23, 1922 to Max and Nora Blunt,
early settlers of the Merville Soldiers Settlement. Joyce was schooled in
Nanaimo and at U.B.C. and lived in Victoria where she taught at Central
Junior High School. She briefly relocated to Vancouver before retiring to
the Comox Valley on her beloved Vancouver Island. Joyce spent her retirement
years supporting the music community and pursuing her love of golf,
gardening and cats. She is survived by her daughter Nony James, special
friend Sue Walden and many other friends. Donations may be made to the Comox
Valley Youth Music Center or to the SPCA. Arrangements have been entrusted

SPENCER, John R.C. (Squadron Leader, RAF Retired) After a long illness
bravely born, John passed away on Friday, June 2, 2006. Born in Kent,
England on May 17, 1924 and educated at Brighton College and later at
Loughborough College where John obtained his degree in Electrical
Engineering. He was an active Senior Electronics Engineer in the RAF until
he retired in 1973. In 1989 he immigrated to Canada and settled in Oak Bay
where he was a volunteer with the PEP Program. John is survived by his
sister, Jean (Les) Benson and his life-long friend, Mildred Boyer. A private

THOMSON, James (Jim) Southam Passed away peacefully in Windsor on June 4,
2006 at 75 years of age in the presence of his family. Beloved husband of
Gail with whom he celebrated 30 years of marriage. Beloved father of James
(Jay) Southam Thomson and wife Kim (Lauren and Jessica) of Ancaster, ON;
Laura Thomson of Calgary, AB; Cyndy and husband Roland Wilhelm (Matthew) of
Thornton, ON. Loving brother of Bunnie (Don) Hunter of Burlington, ON;
Marion (William) Holton of Waterdown, ON. Also survived by many nieces and
nephews. Will be sadly missed by many friends. Jim retired in 1993 from a
meaningful and rewarding position as Publisher of the Windsor Star. Special
thanks for the many kindnesses of the CCU staff at Hotel-Dieu Grace
Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be
appreciated. Cremation has taken place. Memorial Visitation Wednesday, June
7th from 2-5 & 7-9 p.m. at Families First Funeral Home & Tribute Centre
(969-5841) 3260 Dougall Ave, Windsor. A Celebration of Jim's life will be
held on Friday, June 9th from 2-5 p.m. at the Tamahaac Club, 180 Filman
