BROWN, Joyce L., R.N., Died peacefully in her husband's loving arms on
December 18, 2006. Joyce leaves behind her husband, Alan, of 51 years, her
loving family and many dear friends. In 1954 mom graduated as an RN in
Winnipeg and was presented with the Canadian Nurses Award. As the wife of a
fighter pilot and later military attache she was required to move the family
frequently; Mom did a seamless job of making every house a home, a total of
14 times in 3 different countries. Later in Dad's career mom was essential
as an entertainer and diplomat. When the transfer came to NORAD Headquarters

cook and took pride in making an occasion out of every opportunity. Mom had
a dignity that could carry her into any room; she was at ease and at home in
any environment, from extending her kindness and generosity at the soup
kitchen to her elegance and eloquence at the State Department. Mom's
compassion and ongoing commitment to extend a helping hand was shown through
her many volunteer positions, including 15 years of service with the Cancer

HEAD, Daphne December 30, 2000 No farewell words were spoken, No time to say
goodbye, You were gone before we knew it, And only God knows why. Our hearts
still ache in sadness, And secret tears still flow, What it meant to lose
you, No one will ever know. But know we know you want us, To mourn for you
no more, To remember all the happy times, Life still has much in store.
Since you'll never be forgotten, We pledge to you today, A hallowed place
within our hearts, Is where you'll always stay. If years could build a
stairway, And memories were a lane, I would walk right up to heaven, To
bring you home again. Love from husband Roy, sons Mike (Cindy), Donald
(Sherry) and their son Brian, Stephen & Todd, and brother Don (Leslie).

HUGHES, Mary (Mimi) Vincent September 12, 1905 December 28, 2006 When asked
what was important to her in more than a century on earth, Mary would
declare without hesitation that family, friendships, painting and gardening,
in that order, were the essentials that mattered to her most. It could be no
surprise that her interest in and dedication to four generations of family
remained the central focus to her last days, and that friendships among her
own generation and equally with younger generations were sustained no matter
the distance and decades. The oldest of five children, Mary grew up in
Australia before moving with her Pacific Cable Board family to Nova Scotia,
the West Indies and Bamfield on Canada's West Coast. In 1930 she married
cable man Stuart Leslie Hughes at Christ Church Cathedral in Victoria before
moving to Brazil. By 1934 they had returned to Victoria/Langford until
moving to the cable station in Bamfield in 1940 where they lived until 1959.
Port Alberni was home from then until May 2002 when, travelling full circle
at the age of 97, she re-settled in Langford once again. Mary leaves behind
daughters Valentine Hughes (Port Alberni) and Alison Gardner (Victoria),
nine grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. Her daughter, Christine
Abney, predeceased her. She will be sorely missed by family and dear friends
she made right up to the final months of her life. Her memorial service
followed by a tea will be held on Friday, January 5, 2 pm at the First
Memorial Funeral Services chapel, 4725 Falaise Drive, in Royal Oak, just
outside Victoria off the Pat Bay Highway. Please call 658-5244 for details
and directions. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Milner
Gardens and Woodland, 2179 West Island Highway, Qualicum Beach, BC V9K 1G1,
tel: 250-752-8573, www.mala.ca/MilnerGardens/ . Mary's family is profoundly
grateful for the love and support given to her for more than two years by
the staff at the Priory in Langford while she lived in her beloved Arbutus
Cottage in great personal comfort and contentment. 327141

KITE, Sarah Aileen Born on December 29th, 1929 in Welshpool, U.K. Passed
away December 20th, 2006 in Saanichton, BC. Mum (Gran) left us December 20th
after a valiant struggle with complications from a long term illness. Mum
emigrated from the U.K. in the mid 50's and settled initially in Montreal
then North Vancouver and later on Vancouver Island. As a divorced mother of
four young children she determinedly raised each from childhood to adulthood
with little complaint or regards for self interest or personal ambition.
With dogged determination and a bit of "the old stiff upper lip" Mum worked
long hours to provide for her children. Mum was a quiet, kind, thoughtful
and fiercely independent woman and will always be an inspiration to her
children and grandchildren. Mum enjoyed life's simple pleasures: classical
music on CBC radio, driving the Malahat, PBS television, the colour yellow
and a good cup of tea. She will be missed, though never forgotten by a few
long time friends, her ex-husband Bob and her children: Tim (Lisa), Chris
(Alex), Andrew (EIke) and Jill Darley (Grant) and grandchildren Blair,
Lauren, Evan, Jack, Ben and Aaron. "Thank you Mum for such a rich legacy" We
would also like to take this opportunity to extend a special Thank you to
the nurses and Doctors from the Saanich Peninsula Hospital whose care made a
great difference in her final days. We are having an afternoon reception at
Mum's home from 1 5pm on Saturday, January 13th 2007. # 10 1144 Verdier

KOTCHONOSKI, Philip B. February 7, 1930 December 21, 2006 It is with great
sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father,
grandfather and friend after a short battle with cancer. He will be lovingly
remembered and dearly missed by his wife Joyce, children Michael, Mark and
Jane, daughter-in-laws Darlene and Trina and grandchild Tess, as well as
many relatives and friends. Philip had a great ability to make friends. His
easy going attitude and sense of humour endeared him to many, many people
over the years. It was with his close circle of friends, whom he
affectionately called "The Gang" that he had the closest bond and enjoyed
spending time with the most. All the good times that were had over the years
were very special to him. His homemade pot of borscht will be missed by all.
Many heart felt thanks go to the doctors and staff of The Victoria Hospice
Richmond Pavilion that supported him and his family with such compassion
during his illness. A service will be held for Philip at St. Patrick's

McBRATNEY, Jessie McKenzie Winnifred (nee White) With much sadness we
announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Win, on December
20th at Rest Haven Lodge in Sidney. Win was born May 27th, 1916 and had the
distinction of being the first baby born at the new maternity wing of Royal
Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. Predeceased by her husband, Reg (1979) and
brother, Jim, she will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Diana (Carol)
of North Saanich and son, Terry (Linda) of Delta. She will be missed by her
grandchildren Kris (Tom Miles), Darren (Moira), Cindy (Gord Millar) and
Derrick, great grandchildren Matthew, Kelsey, Lindsey, Jason and Aaron, as
well as nieces and nephews. Win and Reg owned and operated Burnside Hardware
from 1943 to 1965. She was always involved with her family including her
parents, Susan and Fred White, and an active volunteer helping out wherever
she could. Win was president of the Air Cadet parents auxiliary and also
president of the Victoria Handweavers and Spinners Guild. She loved weaving
and entranced her grandchildren by gathering plants and creating beautiful
dyes for her wool. Win enjoyed music and encouraged her children in various
musical pursuits. Both were involved in their church and Rotary choirs for
many years. Mum was always there to encourage and support their efforts.
Although Alzheimer's altered Win's life greatly in her last few years, she
never lost her love of music. The many musical concerts at Rest Haven gave
her much pleasure and would often have her tapping her toes. The family is
grateful to the special staff of Rest Haven Lodge for their care, kindness
and compassion. There will be no service at this time. In lieu of flowers,
friends are encouraged to make a donation to the Rest Haven Lodge Music
Therapy Program, 2281 Mills Rd., Sidney, BC, V8L 2C3. 327053

McBRIDE, John Douglas (7 December, 1944 23 December, 2006) It is with deep
regret that the family of Doug McBride announces his passing. Doug was the
much beloved husband to Chris, father to Laurie (Andy), Michelle (Dan) and
Steven (Lisa) and grandfather to Samantha, Matthew and Noah. Doug will also
be missed by his parents Reverend John and Ella McBride and his brother and
sisters, Bruce (Pam), Cheryl (Kevin), Sandra (Dan), and Maureen. Doug was
born in Kusumu, Kenya where he lived on and off until his teens when he came
home to Canada to live with his aunt and uncle in Beachburg, Ontario. Doug
spent several years exploring Canada before settling down to start a family.
Doug spent much of his work life in pulp and paper working for HA Simons,
Alberta Newsprint Company and NLK both abroad and around Canada. In the
1990s Doug changed track and married Chris. The two spent 15 years happily
married. With Chris at his side, Doug opened a Mailboxes Etc Store on the
west side of Vancouver and in later years sold real estate on Vancouver
Island. Moving to Vancouver Island had long been a dream of Doug and Chris's
and he spent his last months looking out the window at the Strait of Juan de
Fuca and listening to his blues music. Doug will be remembered by many for
his sense of humour, his prankster skills, and his story telling. His
children loved to listen to his stories of life working overseas in Eastern
Europe and China. Doug spent much of his down time tending to his exotic
fish and playing snooker at the Union Club in Victoria. One of his
highlights was winning snooker tournaments. The family wishes to thank Dr.
Martins and the Saanich Penninsula Hospital Care Unit for their excellent
care. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be
made to the Canadian or the BC Cancer Society. A Celebration of Doug's life
will be held in January at his home. For details on the Celebration or

ROOP, Susan Jessica (nee Smith) Born November 5, 1946 in Vancouver passed
away peacefully on December 26, 2006 in Victoria. Sue grew up in Vancouver,
moved with the family to Dawson Creek, BC, and eventually settled in
Victoria where she received her B.Ed. from UVic. She married and moved to
PEI in 1972 and raised a family in Charlottetown where she was a respected
elementary school teacher for many years. Sue loved to teach. Even after
being diagnosed with MS she continued for as long as possible volunteering
her time working with special ed students. Life became difficult for her and
after a fall she moved back to Victoria in 2003 into the care of Central
Park Lodge, Glenwarren, with the support of her family. She was genuinely
loved by staff and residents alike. Sue was a fighter and never gave up
trying to keep her strength and quality of life. Despite her diagnosis of
cancer, she proudly took part in the run for MS with the help of Glenwarren
staff earlier this year. Predeceased by her father, John Smith, Sue is
lovingly remembered by her mother Sylvia Smith, sister Valerie Windwick
(Greg), son Colin (Pauline) and granddaughter Madeleine, son Mark, nephews
Trevor and Darryl, many friends, and Mittens. Her family would like to thank
Dr. Kevin Wylie and the staff of Central Park Lodge, Glenwarren, for their
loving attention to Sue in the last 3 years of her life. Special thanks to
Flo Fitzsimmons, for her loving friendship and care. A celebration of Sue's
life will be announced at a later date. 326972

SHOYAMA, Thomas Kunito (Tommy) Died peacefully on December 22 in his 91st
year, after several years of declining health. Predeceased by his cherished
daughter, Kiyomi, sisters Fumi and Mitsu, and brothers Kuz, Art, and Masato,
he will be deeply missed by his loving companion Hazel, nieces Naomi and
Mitsu, great nephew Jamil, as well as friends and former colleagues across
the country. Tom had a remarkable life. Born and raised in Kamloops, BC, he
graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1938 with two degrees:
a B.A. in Economics and a B.Comm. (Honours). From 1939-1945, Tom served as
the editor of "The New Canadian," a weekly civil rights newspaper which was
published first in Vancouver and then later in Kaslo, BC, where he was
interned during the war. In this role, Tom became an eloquent spokesman for
the rights of the Japanese Canadian community and an important community
leader during the wartime evacuation and resettlement. Through 1945-1946,
Tom served his country in the S-20 Intelligence Corps of the Canadian Army.
Upon discharge, he was encouraged to go to work for the CCF government in
Saskatchewan, initially as a research economist, and later as economic
advisor to the Premier, serving in this capacity with both Premiers
T.C.Douglas and W.S. Lloyd. In 1964, along with other prominent public
servants, known fondly as the "Saskatchewan Mafia," Tom moved to Ottawa,
first joining the Economic Council of Canada, then moving to the Finance
Department in 1967. In 1968, he was appointed Assistant Deputy Minister of
Finance, and by 1975, after a brief term as Deputy Minister of Energy, Mines
and Resources, he returned to the Finance Department as Deputy Minister,
serving under three Ministers of Finance: John Turner, Donald Macdonald, and
Jean Chretien. Among the many contributions Tom made to public policy
initiatives during his long career in public service, he was personally most
proud of the role he played in establishing hospital and medical care
insurance in Canada, in instituting child tax credits, and in providing for
the entry of foreign banks into the banking system. Retiring from the
Finance Department in 1979, Tom served in the Privy Council Office, advising
Prime Minister Trudeau on economic aspects of the Constitution. As well, he
was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of Atomic Energy of Canada
that year. In 1980, at the age of 64, Tom moved to Victoria to become a
visiting professor at the University of Victoria, teaching in both the
School of Public Administration and the Department of Pacific and Asian
Studies. Ottawa's loss became Victoria's gain, as Tom enjoyed this new
career so much that he continued working with students in one capacity or
another for a further 15 years. Victoria also allowed Tom a chance to
indulge in his true passion: gardening. While he enjoyed fishing, curling,
travelling, golf, bridge, and poker, he was truly happiest when tending his
roses or digging his vegetable bed for a new season. Tom's many
contributions to public service, to his various communities, and to Canada,
have been recognized through many national awards, including Officer of the
Order of Canada (1978), Outstanding Achievement in the Public Service of
Canada (1978), the Vanier Medal in Public Administration (1982), as well as
several honourary degrees. In 1992, the government of Japan awarded him the
Order of the Sacred Treasure (gold and silver star) in recognition of his
contributions to the Japanese Canadian community. A remarkable man with a
generous spirit, Tom was deeply loved and his loss will be felt by all who
knew him. A memorial service will be held in Victoria in January (date, time
and place to be announced). No flowers by request. If desired, donations may
be made to the Nikkei Museum and Heritage Centre in Burnaby, or to the
University of Victoria Bursary Fund. "And every winter turns to spring".
