BURNETT-Robert Graham July 4, 1928 - January 26, 2007 We mourn the loss of
Graham, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, who passed
away peacefully at home after a two-month-long illness which followed an
active, useful and interesting life. Graham was born in Edmonton to John and
Margaret Burnett who had emigrated from Scotland. At an early age he moved
to Vancouver Island where he grew up in several places and got his first
"adult" job at Lake Cowichan with the Bank of Toronto, followed shortly by a
switch to the forest industry where he was to spend the rest of his career
in the capacity of accountant, manager and controller. From the early 1950's
to his early retirement in 1986, he worked for over 35 years for companies
that eventually became Crown Zellerbach, Fletcher-Challenge Canada, and
Crown Forest Products, in various locations: Ocean Falls, Campbell River and
Vancouver. Graham's qualifications as a CGA were only the beginning of his
education. During the 1970's and 80's he was enrolled at UBC as a mature
student, graduating with a BA in Philosophy in 1985. After retirement he
entered the Emily Carr College of Art and Design to study painting,
print-making and collage, receiving his diploma in May of 1991. For the 15
plus years since then he devoted himself to his development as an artist. He
has shown his artwork in various locations among them Edmonton, Dawson City
and Whitehorse. His most recent exhibition was in July 2006 in Edmonton at
"The Works" a city-wide celebration of visual art held every summer, where
his work was displayed in the rotunda of the Edmonton Journal building. His
art studio for the past several years was located on Cordova Street.
Graham's interests ranged widely beyond art and forest products - to music,
art films, photography, travel, hiking and back-packing, distance swimming
and weight and fitness training as well as wide-ranging intellectual
pursuits. His physical and mental stamina belied his age and made his sudden
serious illness shocking to all those familiar with his youthfulness and
vitality. He is mourned by his wife of 20 years, Sue Abzinger, his sons Ross
and Ian, his daughters Iona Turner and Rebecca Hock, his sister Sheila Turk,
his grandchildren Travis, Meaghan and Brett Hock, Devon and Patrick
Fewtrell, and Kerstin Burnett, his nieces Ingrid and Karin Turk and nephew
John Turk. We will be celebrating his memory with pride and love on Friday,
February 2nd at Stamps Landing Pub (upstairs) in False Creek, with a service
at 2 p.m. followed by a reception. Stamps is located beside Monk McQueen's
in False Creek South. Directions: Turn off 6th Avenue onto Moberly Road
(opposite Heather St.) and park in one of the lots to the right, passing
Claytech Studios before turning left at Stamps Landing. The pub is a short
distance along on the left hand side. In lieu of flowers, donations to Help
the Aged, Foster Parents Plan or Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without
Borders) may be sent c/o 817 Sawcut, Vancouver BC V5Z 4A2

McKINNON _ Mary McLagan (nee Campbell) It is with deep sorrow we announce
the sudden passing of our wonderful wife and mother, Mary McLagan McKinnon
(nee Campbell) at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Comox, British Columbia, on
Thursday, January 25, 2007, surrounded by her loving West Coast family. Mary
was born November 1, 1915 at the mining town of Phoenix in BC's Boundary
Country to Charles M. and Lucy (McGeer) Campbell. Being a mining family, the
Campbell's - Mary and her brothers Charlie and Jimmy - moved around Canada
and the world, from Phoenix to Grand Forks to Cassidy, to Montreal, then to
Okeep in South Africa. On returning to Vancouver, she attended Queen Mary
and Lord Bing and in 1940 graduated from nursing at St. Paul's Hospital.
There being a war on, Mary then joined the Army Medical Corps' as a
Lieutenant Nursing Sister and served both in Canada and the European
Theatre. In 1942, while stationed at the Military Hospital in Nanaimo, Mary
met and became engaged to a young army captain from Ontario, Gerry McKinnon.
As "luck" would have it, they went overseas on the same troop ship, were
stationed close to one another in Britain and when Gerry was evacuated from
Normandy after being wounded after Falaise, Mary became his ward nurse. They
were married at the Royal Garrison Church in Aldershot, England. On
returning to Canada, they lived and raised a family in Peterborough,
Ontario, then moved back to Mary's beloved West Coast, living in Vancouver,
Qualicum Beach and finally, Comox. The McKinnons have two children, Mary
Ellen Chapple, of Port Hope, Ontario and Tim (Gail) of Comox. There are two
grandchildren, Sarah and Alexander, of Toronto. Mary was a gracious, gentle
woman and the best of mothers. On February 20, 2007, the McKinnon's would
have celebrated the 62nd anniversary of their love affair and marriage. A
private commemoration of Mary's life will be held at a later date.
Arrangements entrusted to Comox Valley Funeral Home & Cremation, 1101 Ryan
Road, Courtenay.

SWANSON _ Roy September 16, 1917 - January 4, 2007 Veteran of WWII as a
Capt. in the Royal Canadian Engineers. In his 90th year. Roy joined his
beloved wife Yvette of 65 years. He is survived by his brother Glenn and his
four children Don, Ray, Len, Denise with whom he had managed to develop the
best type of bond a father can have. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren
who have been regaled with his fun-filled stories from his past, and four
great-grandchildren who will miss these stories. Roy was a civil engineer
with CP Rail, who enjoyed working with his hands, which made him an
extremely popular fix-it man with his neighbours and their wives. He prided
himself on being a world traveller and bragged he had set foot on six
continents. He volunteered at both the Red Cross and his church, where he
was well known as a bingo caller and as a financial officer. For those who
knew him, we should charge our glasses, and toast a man who both loved and
lived life to the fullest. A funeral service will be held at the Good

SWANSON _ Yvette (nee Longtin) December 8, 1918 - November 23, 2006
Peacefully in Ottawa after a long battle with Alzheimer's. After 65 years of
marriage to Roy, in whose arms she loved to float around the dance floor.
Survived by her four children Don, Ray, Len, and Denise (Clement) whose most
difficult task growing up was to show appropriate appreciation at the dinner
table for her culinary skills! She also leaves ten grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren, who unfortunately will never hear her beautiful voice
rendering her beloved Christmas carols, especially joyous in her native
French. She and Roy spent most of their retired life in White Rock. They
were a fiercely competitive (and fearsome) partnership at bridge, spending
many delightful evenings with friends. Community volunteer, forth right in
speech, fiscally prudent and stubbornly determined, she will take the Lord
by the hand and go charging forth to the next challenge that awaits her. A
funeral service will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, White Rock,
BC, February 3, 2007 at 1:00 pm.
