BOYD, Loreen Victoria (nee Lesopoy) It is with profound sadness that we say
goodbye to a woman who was loved and admired by many. Loreen was born
October 29, 1927 in The Pas, Manitoba and passed away peacefully on February
3, 2007 at Saanich Peninsula Hospital in Victoria, B.C. She was a country
girl at heart and loved to be outside. She was an avid horsewoman, artist,
musician, gardener and rockhound. As a young woman she moved to Victoria
where she met Gordon, a handsome young sailor, and they were wed in February
of 1950. They had 4 children, Gordon, Jo-Ann (m.Art), and twins Dennis and
Denise (m.Lance). One of the highlights of her life was when her first
grandchild was born in 1971, Jodie Ann (m.Jody). They played together
endlessly. Then more grandchildren came and filled her with even more joy,
Scott, Irene (m.Alex), Josie and Cody. In 2005 her first great-grandson
Chase was born. A second, Brodie, is on his way, but didn't arrive in time
to meet his great-granny. Loreen suffered an accident In 1978 which left her
quadrapalegic. Her amazing will to live in spite of those difficult
circumstances has set a courageous example for us all. We remember and
honour a very special woman who graced our lives. We will miss her more than
words can say. One person that deserves special mention is her
sister-in-Iaw, Norine, a steadfast friend who was uniquely dear in Loreen's
heart, and a sincere thank you to all the nurses and staff that helped care
for her. Loreen is also survived by sisters Ruby and Bernice, brother Bill,
many cousins, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by parents William and
Lillian and sister Irene. Services will be held at First Memorial Funeral
Services, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at
10:00 am. 338328

BRIDEAU, Mary Milne (Molly) November 12, 1925 February 5, 2007 It is with
much sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother in

cancer and throughout this period retained her independent spirit and sense
of humour. She will long be remembered for the series of light-hearted
living wakes she organized and held on her own behalf in order to bring
friends and family together. Many thanks to the staff of the Juan de Fuca
Home Support Service for providing excellent care and support to Molly over
the past months and to the staff and volunteers of the Victoria Hospice
Society. Thanks also to Dr. Andrew Isaac who could always be relied upon to
make Molly laugh and to special caregivers, Pat and Samantha. Cremation is
to take place and, by request, Molly's ashes will be spread at sea and
followed by a simple family gathering. No service will be held. In lieu of

COCKBURN, Patricia (nee Cowan) January 18, 1927 February 3, 2007 Pat (
"Peter "), of Victoria, passed away peacefully after a brief illness. Born
in Cumberland and raised in Duncan, Peter spent most of her long, active
life with her husband Bill far away from Vancouver Island before retiring to
Victoria in 1988. As a Bachelor of Commerce student at UBC she joined the
Delta Gamma sorority, of which she was a lifelong member. After completing
her degree in 1948, Peter worked for a year in Victoria before moving to
Ottawa, where she held a number of positions, including at Statistics Canada
and the CBC. In Ottawa, Peter met Bill Cockburn, a native of Glasgow,
Scotland, whom she married in 1950. In 1959, her full-time career was
interrupted to raise two children, Bruce and Sally, but she continued to do
freelance work as a contractor. With her children at university, she
returned to full-time jobs with Complan Research and later with Gallup
Canada. Throughout her life, Peter enjoyed her passion for tennis. She won
the junior BC women's championship in 1948 and 1949, and the Rideau Club
ladies tournament in Ottawa in 1951. In 1997, she was a member of the
winning VI-level team at the BC team tennis tournament. However, most of her
tennis was as social as it was competitive. Bill's scientific career took
the family to Belgium from 1969 to 1973, an adventure that allowed Peter to
explore European culture, to learn French and to form lasting friendships
with people from several European countries. She also easily made friends
during their postings to Bonn, Germany, from 1979 to 1983, and Washington,
DC, from 1983 to 1988. At all of these homes, Peter was quick to get
involved in volunteer work, including with the Canadian Mental Health
Association in Ottawa, the National Art Gallery in Washington, DC, where she
was a docent in French, and the Alzheimer Society in Victoria. Peter will be
greatly missed by Bill; Bruce, Sally, and their spouses Judy and Onno; and
relatives around the world. Her energy, sense of humour and enthusiasm will
also be remembered by her numerous friends. A memorial service will be held
in Victoria on March 18 or 19 (details to be announced). In lieu of flowers,
please send donations to the Victoria Hospice and Palliative Care

Ltd., Imperial Oil Agent (for 28 years), San Juan Fishing Company, West
Coast Trail Water Taxi and Port Renfrew Marina and R. V. Park. Travel was
also dear to him and his wife, they often traveled to Mexico and in the past
cruised to China and Alaska. He was abundantly supportive, kind and generous
to family, friends and community. His caring nature will be missed and
remembered by all who grew to know, love and respect this man who had such a
big heart and extreme passion for life. The family would like to extend our
sincere thanks to Dr. Isabel Rimmer and staff at Cowichan District Hospital
for the recent care and support and a very special thank you to Dr. Walter
Chow, his physician and friend for so many years. Adios Amigo. In lieu of
flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity. There will be a
celebration of his life at Quw'utson Centre, 200 Cowichan Way, Duncan, B.C.

THOMSON, C. Gordon 1913 2007 On January 30th, peacefully in his sleep, we
lost our beloved Gord at the age of 94. Known as Mr. Thomson to many, he
served for several decades as teacher and vice-principal in the Saanich
School District, retiring in 1975. He also enjoyed two years teaching at
AFCENT in the Netherlands. Born in Dublin, Ireland during the troubles, he
emigrated to Duncan in 1927 with his parents who were seeking a better life
for their three sons. A year later they moved to a farm near Prospect Lake.
During the depression, Gord interrupted his education to help his mother
with the farm, selling chickens and eggs throughout Victoria and working for
HBC. He later attended Victoria Normal School and gained his education
degree from UBC. After teaching briefly in Salmon Arm, his life was once
again interrupted, this time by the Second World War. He enlisted and served
in the RCAF as a Navigator with Pathfinders Squadron. In Dad's own words,
the one good thing about that time was that he met his beloved Scottish
war-bride, Jeannie. Returning to Canada, Gord resumed his teaching career,
and they started their family life together. He was a loving father to his
four children and a wonderful husband to Jean, who predeceased him in 1989.
After his retirement, the two enjoyed many years of travelling, golfing,
symphony concerts, bridge with friends and time spent with family. Ever the
gentleman, Gord was always concerned with the welfare of others. He was
respected for his intelligence and loved for his quick wit and kind nature.
He lived his life with gratitude, optimism and determination. He was the
grand old man of our family. He loved gardening, books and knowledge,
languages, and was a dedicated letter writer. Until his last year, he never
missed completing the NY Times crossword puzzle it was his weekly challenge.
His family, children Frances, Keith, Anne (Dave) and Bruce (Helen),
grandchildren Josh (Kelly), Paul, Lucas and Jake and great-grandsons Cole
and Hunter , as well as extended family and many friends will dearly miss
him. A special thanks to the caregivers who helped Dad in the last year. A
remembrance service will be held at McCall's, at Vancouver and Johnson, on
Thursday, February 15 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if desired, please
donate to the Canadian Cancer Society. "So long, old Gord, press on
regardless, to heaven" 338307

WATERTON, Barbara Mary Born on July 22, 1916, Babs grew up on a family farm
with her parents, Fred and Ethel and brother Bill (Welman). It was here she
learnt to love and respect both the environment and all the critters who
inhabit it. After attending Normal School in Winnipeg, Mom became a teacher
in a small community called Scandinavia. The one room school, housed grades
1 9. She met her future husband Warren at a Friday dance in the town hall,
not long after he convinced her to marry him --just 3 days before he left to
join the allied forces in Europe for 6 years. The Welman clan relocated to
Victoria during this time, Warren joined them on his return. Together they
built their home on Eva Ave. in Gordon Head. Mom was the neighbourhood
ambassador; welcoming new arrivals, lending a helping hand, cooking and
caring for those in need. A Brown Owl for 22 years she influenced a myriad
of young women who remember her with fondness. Many, now "past their teens",
would stop to chat during chance encounters, recounting how their Brownie
experience enriched their lives. Babs loved children and took great pride in
her granddaughter Melissa. Her home was always open to anyone, especially
the young and boisterous. We, her daughters, Jennifer and Peggy, were
blessed to have grown up with such a wonderful woman to call our Mother.
Rarely judgemental Babs possessed a strong sense of what was right and wrong
in making up a contributing member of society. She often reminded us that
"If you have the strength of your own convictions you can always stand tall"
and "If you always do your best, no one can ask for more". Running a close
second to her love for her family and neighbours was her love of her garden.
Babs had 4 green fingers as well as her thumb; so many have found peace and
serenity surrounded by the beauty she nurtured. It is with profound sadness
that we said goodbye on the afternoon of February 4, 2007, just before Mom's
favourite season. However, we stand firm in our conviction that Barbara Mary
Waterton will find spring wherever her next adventure takes her and that all
of us who have cherished our time with her will move on; stronger and
enriched by the gift of her caring. A celebration of life will be held at a
future date to be announced and we request in lieu of flowers that anyone
who wishes might give a remembrance to Oak Bay Kiwanis Foundation. It is
impossible to fully express how much we appreciate the fabulous staff at Oak
Bay Kiwanis Pavilion. In the year and a half that Babs resided at OBK their
humour, compassion and love for all the residents always shone through. I
know, that had she been able, Mom would have told them they were both angels
and saints, shot through with just enough devilment to make them fun. We
love you Momma and you will be sorely missed. 338378
