ANDERSON _ Edna Christina (Mattson) Born in Cabri, Saskatchewan, May 31,
1918, passed away March 19, 2007 at Minoru Residence, Richmond, BC.
Predeceased by her husband, George Anderson, her brothers Norman, Morris,
Raymond and Kenneth; survived by her daughter Marlene (Greg), sisters Mabel
(John), Helen, Lillian and May; sister-in-law Eileen, and many nieces and
nephews in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Minnesota and Georgia. In Cabri she
was caregiver for her seven siblings, played the organ and guitar, curled,

in Regina. Her next adventure was wartime wife, mother and co-proprietor of
a rooming house in Vancouver from 1945 to 1961, mainly looking after young
gals coming from the small towns of BC to the big city. She was a great
"housemother". To all those who knew her, "Eddie" had a great sense of
humour, a quick wit, was an excellent judge of character, and loved to sing,
dance and whistle. Many thanks to Dr. James McCreary for his care over and
above the call of duty, and also to the staff of Minoru Residence for their
loving care, and to her attendant and friend, Pinky Alladin. Funeral service

ANDERSON _ Mary A.I. Born London, England August 19, 1911. Much-loved mother
and Nanna, Mary passed away peacefully March 13th, 2007 in her 96th year
after a brief stay in hospital. Up until that time Mary had lived
independently. Mary was predeceased by her husband William (Michael) Kyle,
who was killed at the Battle of Dunkirk in 1940; her second husband,
Canadian Army Regimental Sergeant Major William (Andy) Jay Anderson, who
died as a result of war injuries in 1950; and beloved son Ian Clay Anderson
who passed away in 1983. Mary led an exciting and eventful life, spending
her first 32 years in England and then moving to Canada during WWII. Mary
wed Andy early in 1944, then with Kathleen (Michael's daughter) embarked on
a passenger liner to Canada. Mary and one other woman, were the only "war
brides" on board, the rest of the passengers were returning soldiers. After
a harrowing voyage dodging U-Boats, the liner docked in Halifax on February
29th, 1944. Andy met Mary and Kathleen on the trans-Canada train, and they
traveled west to begin a new life in Kelowna, British Columbia. When Andy
died in 1950, Mary was left to raise four young children on her own.
Although Mary missed her homeland she decided that Canada offered more
opportunity for her children. In 1974, Mary moved from the Okanagan to the
Lower Mainland, to be closer to daughter Carol and her family. In her
earlier years Mary enjoyed traveling, gardening and visiting family in
England and Ireland. In more recent years Mary enjoyed feeding the blue
jays, reading a good novel and visits from family. Mary is deeply missed by
daughters, Kathleen (Bill), Carol (Gary), son John (Marie), 10
grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and her nieces and nephews. We will
always remember Mum for her repertoire of entertaining stories and songs,
her wry sense of humour, her generous heart, and her love of life. Mum, we
miss you so much. The family will gather for a memorial reunion later this
year.

approached, Jessie loved traveling with Tommy to the 4 corners of the world

their travels she expressed her creative talents by her prolific production
of both fabric and painted butterflies and dragonflies. Jessie's crafts were
often juried for the many craft fairs that she took part in and through her
"gift of the gab" she sold thousands which not only decorate homes around
the Vancouver area but also many were left at the places where she traveled.

occupation forces, especially towards the end of the war. Upon his arrival
in Canada he continued to apply his cooper trade for Rosemount Barrel and
Drum and later for Seagram's Distillery in Montreal. He retired in 1976. In
1979 he moved to White Rock B.C. where he continued to enjoy his trade and

in his nineties he frequently joined his sons on their boat. He enjoyed life
and his family. He will be missed. He has asked that his ashes be spread
over the ocean. The Family would like to thank all those who assisted Albert

GALLOWAY _ ALICE (1920-2007) Alice Veronica Galloway (nee MacDonald), born
January 7, 1920, in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, died of cancer, peacefully
at home on March 22, 2007 in Vancouver. Alice was the daughter of Cape
Breton coal miner and union activist, Angus MacDonald and Beatrice
Livingston. She was predeceased by her four brothers, Mickey, Joe, Wallace
and Alec, and her younger sister Betty. In 1945 Alice met Al, the handsome
bass player and singer in the army band, and this began a life-long love
affair. They married on November 27, 1945 and moved to Vancouver. The
transition from such a loving close-knit Cape Breton family, was a difficult
period of adjustment. Where they lived and worked, Al and Alice Galloway
effortlessly opened their hearts and spaces to a wide range of relatives,
friends and customers. For 25 years Al ran a unique barbershop on West
Broadway and greeted clients with songs, carved wooden masks and two barber
chairs from the early 1900s. His unstoppable humour, stories and unassuming
Alberta wisdom even got him through the Beatles era where haircuts gave way
to transcendental meditation. Alice was the reigning queen of her kitchen on
13th and Waterloo. A sign in the space said "My mind's made up. Don't
confuse me with the Facts." She was the boss, the knowing one, the hostess
with a direct pipeline to God. Alice set up living room picnics of tea,
cheddar cheese cinnamon toast. So many conversations, so much laughter.
Throughout the 60s the basement rec room was filled with piano, acoustic
guitar, bongos, and a stand up bass, all uniting to lift the sing-alongs to
new heights. At weekend breakfasts her children, grandchildren and friends
she called extended family, had spirited discussions. No subject was off
limits. Temperatures could rise to regions above those recorded by the
thermometer on the wall. With each pancake and cup of Yoka coffee came a
serving of sympathy for the working person, for people raising young
children. We all spoke, knowing, at that table that Canadian democracy
really means you and I. Alice knew something about taking a stand in this
busy whirling world. She knew that with a strong family, the right attitude
and the right kind of support each person at any breakfast table, could go
out there into that big big world and do something great. Alice tackled life
with vitality and curiosity. Right up to her death she hosted film night on
Friday nights and insisted on seeing the latest videos and documentaries.
She read fiction and non-fiction and was always up for clarifying "just what
that writer or director was trying to say." A confidante to all her
grandchildren, Alice Galloway was an original not a copy. She was not afraid
to tell you that you weren't living up to your potential, when you, uh,
weren't living up to your potential. But she was also quick to laugh about
how we all can slide off the tracks. She said in the last few days, "after
all is said and done, it turned out a lot better than I thought it would."
The whole family wishes to express their sincere thanks to all those who
helped fulfill Alice's wish to die at home. Shelley Stewart, her beloved
daughter-in-law, organized a care plan and brought the family together. Dr.
Nicola James provided comfort and loving care during her many home visits.
Neighbours Fred and Lorna Mah provided friendship and a watchful eye. Gary
the shift coordinator of Bayshore Home Health assisted the family on short
notice. At first Alice was resistant to strangers coming into her home, but
each caregiver's tenderness won her over. She loved them all, especially
Victoria. The palliative care nurses eased Alice through her final days and

GROOS _ Phyllis Elizabeth "Pep" (Pooley) January 30, 1919 - March 21, 2007
Although we all hoped to keep her forever, in the early hours of March 21,
2007, the first day of Spring, we unexpectedly bid adieu to our wonderful
mother, Nanya, Auntie Pep and dear friend, Pep Groos. Predeceased by her
husband, Captain David Groos (1976) and her sister, Daphne, Pep will be
sorely missed by all who enjoyed her grace and warmth. We, her family,
children Laura Groos Prins (Gerry), Madeleine Humer, Brian Groos and Hilary
Bungarten (Harald) and grandchildren David (Erin) and Emma Blewett, Saskia
(Wolfi) and Patrick Humer, and Marc Laura Bungarten will miss having our
"matriarch" play her usual active role in our lives. A third generation
Esquimalt resident, youngest daughter of BC Attorney General and BC
Conservative Party Leader R. H. "Harry" Pooley and his musician wife, Laura
Loewen. Mum's roots ran deep in Victoria. In her younger years Pep loved her
horse-riding and grass hockey while at Norfolk House School, later heading
to France to study, returning to the West Coast immediately before the
Second World War. As a navy wife, mother and later, wife of the Member of
Parliament for Victoria, she quietly contributed to the Victoria community,
supporting the arts, including the Victoria Conservatory of Music, the
Victoria Music Festival and recently the Victoria Children's Choir. After
losing Dad far too early, she became the ideal "Nanya" to her 6
grandchildren, visiting them around the world. Active right up to her death,
she created a home and garden setting where there was always a warm welcome
to her extended family of friends of all ages. A life well-lived by one
well-loved. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mum's memory would be
gratefully received by the David and Pep Groos Fund for the Arts in Victoria
through the Victoria Foundation, (250) 381-5532. A Celebration of Pep's life
will be held at Christ Church Cathedral (Victoria), Quadra and Rockland, at

REID _ Douglas Charles Thomas September 03, 1924 - March 27, 2007 Doug had a
long, full and wonderfully varied life. He was born in Vancouver, B.C. and
spend many years in the Kitsilano area of Vancouver and in Richmond, B.C. As
a boy, Doug displayed natural talent in all areas of athletics. He went on
to become a skilled equestrian, down-hill skier, ice skater, and tennis,
hockey, rugby, and football player. He is famous for his rugby ('rugger')
and football prowess, at Kitsilano High School, and at the University of
British Columbia. He was the 1944 recipient of the Howie McPhee Trophy for
the best rugby player. In 1944, Doug joined the Royal Canadian Navy, during
the 'hostilities' of the Second World War. He served aboard the ships
H.M.C.S. Discovery, Protector, and Algonquin between 1944 and 1946, and saw
active duty in the Mediterranean. After the war, Doug continued with
professional sports, and was especially proud of his football years, forming
the first B.C. Lions team in 1954, and later playing for the Calgary
Stampeders. He was inducted into the U.B.C. Sport Hall of Fame in 1995. In
2004, his name was entered onto the B.C. Lions' 'Wall of Fame'. During the
post-war years, Doug trained as a teacher, and completed his B.A. at the
University of British Columbia in 1949. He began working for the Vancouver
School Board in 1952 and continued that work for the next 37 years. During
that time, he taught Elementary school for two years, Secondary school for
13 years, and was in Administrative positions for five years, including one
year as interim Head of Student Services. He completed his M.A. at Simon
Fraser University in 1976. The rest of his school working years were spent
as a skilled and highly respected Elementary School Area Counsellor. He
especially loved his work training teachers, and was admired for his group
counseling work with children. His education career ended after a number of
years in Vancouver's particularly challenging east-side and inner-city
schools. He retired in 1989. Doug is also well-known in B.C. Equestrian
circles. He was actively involved in a wide variety of equestrian
activities, from pleasure and competitive riding, to raising, breeding and
showing horses. He actively supported Pony Clubs and Young Riders groups,
and worked for many years as a Canadian Equestrian Federation Judge. He was
especially proud of his daughter Leslie Reid, delighted in supporting her
throughout his life, and thrilled to watch her develop into a highly
accomplished dressage rider, keen competitor, and talented riding
instructor. Doug moved to Maple Bay, Vancouver Island, 15 years ago, with
his wife, Joanna Neilson, and their daughter, Caitlin Reid. There he enjoyed
a number of years of good health, and was actively involved in Tai Chi,
horse-show judging, bicycle riding, gardening, and sailing. He also enjoyed
camping, holidaying in Mexico, whale-watching, garage 'sale-ing', attending
auctions and symphony concerts, drinking Spanish coffees, and doing
crossword puzzles. For the past 18 years, Doug delighted in being an
'at-home dad'. He took extraordinary pleasure and pride in watching his
daughter, Caitlin, grow and become an amazing, kind, gracious, intelligent
and multi-talented young lady. Doug's last 10 years were marred by declining
health, and the many tediums, frustrations disappointments and limitations
of deteriorating mental and physical abilities. After a courageous and
tumultuous 10-year struggle with Lewy Body Syndrome, he was recently
suddenly stricken with a very aggressive form cancer. He passed away at his
home, with Joanna and Caitlin by his side. We know that Doug joins with us
in extending our heart-felt thanks to the 'cast of hundreds' who have cared
for him and supported us over the past decade. Thanks to all the medical and
other professional support workers who helped Doug be as well as possible,
as independent as possible, as happy as possible, and at home as long as
possible. Doug will be remembered for his dry humour, his quiet, gentle,
kind and generous personality, his positive attitude, his love of family,
his story-telling, his love of dancing, his passion for native art and
culture, and his many interests, skills, talents and life accomplishments.
He is survived by his wife, Joanna, his daughters, Caitlin and Leslie, and
his brother, Don, and by many extended family members. Donations in Doug's
memory may be sent to the Providence Community Association Therapeutic
Riding Program, or to the Cowichan Rugby Club. Flowers are gratefully
declined. A celebration of Doug's amazing life will take place on Saturday,

TAYLER _ Gary George Williams b. March 24, 1939 in Edmonton, AB. d. March
19, 2007 in Langley, B.C. Married to Christina (deceased) and survived by
son Adam Tayler (Jen), daughters Michelle Tayler and Lara Galloway (Steve),
and grandchildren Aidan, Morgan, Sydney, Katharine and TBA May 2nd. Also
survived by brother Dennis (Terry) and sister Janis, as well as various
cousins, nieces, and nephew. Gary grew up in Victoria during WWII and moved
back to Edmonton with his parents when the war ended. They moved to Okanagan
Center in 1948 and then to Vancouver in 1950. At the age of 12, he started
paying his own way with his paper route. He worked as a commercial fisherman
in the early 60's to put himself through UBC where he was part of "the 4th
Ave crowd" and was known as GT. He also learned to fly and received his
commercial pilots licence for single engine fixed wing, and later in life
upgraded to multi-engine. He moved to Montreal and was a public relations
officer for Expo 67. When he returned to Vancouver in 1971, he met Christina
and they married June 17, 1972 and Gary successfully started Tayler
Construction. He longed for a simpler life and a better place to raise the
kids, so the family moved to Penticton in 1976 and planted a vineyard. There
he also became a Mason, a Shriner, coached soccer, and was President of the
B.C. Grape Growers Association. The family moved back to Cloverdale in 1988
and Gary started Trinity Construction and again became a successful
builder/developer. He designed and built his own home in Langley in 1995 and
still yearning a vineyard, planted one in 1997. That November, Gary suffered
a heart attack and even though half of his heart was destroyed, he
persevered. He "retired early" in 2000 and opened Glenugie Winery June 15,
2002 which he again designed and built himself. He also joined the Rotary,
was involved in politics at all levels, and was an official of BC Athletics.
Gary was a loving and supportive father, who believed you got out of life
what you put into it. He could never be called a shy and quiet man, and was
never afraid to express his opinion, and he told it like it was. Many a
night the world's problems were solved over a glass of wine. He had a great
interest in history and politics, and believed knowledge was power, and was
never without a fresh book to read. Magnanimous would be a single word to
describe Gary, but he was so much more. Independent, gregarious, stubborn,
dauntless, defiant, generous, supportive, and wise are adjectives that just
scratch the surface. Through all his ups and downs, he always stood up for
himself and never let himself be pushed around. He did not do things the
easy way, he did them his way, and he never gave up. He lived life to it's
fullest. Gary was definitely one in a million and will be sorely missed by
all that knew him. A service is to be held on Saturday, March 31 at the
Aldergrove Kinsman Community Centre at 2:00 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, please
give to the Salvation Army or the B.C./Yukon Heart and Stroke Foundation.
