BAILLIE, Geraldine May (nee Sample) Born February 23, 1920, in Radisson, SK.
An honour student throughout her childhood, she had to wait two years after
high school graduation before she could train as a Registered Nurse in
Saskatoon. True to the description of her classmates in her yearbook, beauty
and wisdom are so rarely combined". She went to Vancouver for a course in
operating room techniques, and it was there that she received a telegram
from a young airforce navigator, Wilfred Baillie, wanting to know if she
would see him if he were to come to Vancouver. She said yes, and they were
married four days later, in November 1944. They were initially stationed at
Pat Bay on Vancouver Island, and upon Wilf's discharge from the RCAF in
1945, they moved to Calgary where their son William John was born December
1945. Son Robert Arne was born in September 1947 in Jackson, Mississippi,
while the family was on a two-year assignment with Shell Oil, before
returning to Calgary where they raised their family. They then moved to
Singapore in 1972 for 6 years and then retired to Deep Cove on Vancouver
Island in 1978. Gerry was a champion curler, and an avid golfer, with a
number of holes-in-one to her credit as well as many flight wins in
tournament play, playing out of the Calgary Golf and Country Club for many
years and, after retirement to Vancouver Island, out of the Uplands Golf and
Country Club in Victoria. In fact, it was in August of 1998 that she
suffered a stroke while on the golf course, ending her many years of
enjoyment of the game, and leaving her with sight and memory problems. Being
a perfectionist at everything she did, this made her very frustrated and
unhappy. Her health deteriorated this last year, and she passed away in her
sleep at 6 o'clock in the morning of the first day of spring, March 20th.
Gerry was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred, in November 2005 and since
his death she has many times said Oh, Wilf is just around the corner having
a cup of coffee". Perhaps now she will be able to join him for that coffee.
Gerry is survived by her son William and friend Guillaume of Paris, France;
her son Robert and wife Kristin of Surrey; granddaughter Dr. Jill
(Nathaniel) Olsson, and great-granddaughters Elizabeth and Eleanor Olsson,
of Surrey; and grandson Dr. Daniel (Katherine) Baillie, and great-grandson
Taidhg Baillie, of Bethlehem, PA. A special thanks goes out to her cousin
and our family friend, Jean Nordlund, who visited Gerry faithfully during
her last years, bringing her happiness and joy to brighten her days. It
meant a lot to her and to her family. Gerry was selfeffacing, loving,
compassionate and kind. A life well-lived by one well-loved. There will be
no service by request. 353052

CLARKE, Howard Donald Passed away suddenly in his home on March 15, 2007.
These past ten months, he grieved deeply and bravely for his beloved Kay,
his wife of 45 years. It was his broken heart that brought them together
again. Many are left to grieve the passing of this kind, intelligent,
adventurous man: his beloved children, grandchildren and great grandson, his
cherished siblings, many nieces and nephews and their children, and many
many good friends all over the world. Howie had a tremendously full 73
years. He was an hotelier in Toronto, Bermuda and New England. He was a real
estate agent and property manager in Victoria. Right up to recent years, he
loved to ski and he won most of the pool games he ever played. He was a deep
thinker, very well read on astronomy, physics and world events. The loss of
his son Brian in 1973 deepened his ability to love fully and live
courageously. He loved people, made friends easily and kept his circle
strong. The Love he created sustains us now. He spent his final years in
Qualicum Bay, enjoyed many family gatherings, a group of friends who made
sure he was never alone and one of the most beautiful landscapes in the
world. We're proud of you Dad and we Love you forever. 352961

CLEGHORN, Kay (Kathleen Mary) Went to be with her Lord and Saviour on March
24th, 2007, at the age of 84. She will be reunited with her husband, Ken
(1974) and their son, Leslie (1998) and the many friends who have gone
before. She leaves behind her much-loved children, Janet Howard, Rick
(Margaret) Cleghom, Nancy (David) Balabuck. Her grandchildren ~ Katie
(Bruce), Richard (Crystal), Jeffrey, Chris, Kara (Andrew), Michael, Dennis
(Alana), Graeme and Meagan. Her great grandchildren Gage and Tyler and a
dearly beloved cousin, Bill Gillespie of Mississauga, Ontario. Kay was a
Navy wife with all the trials and tribulations that this statement entails.
She and Ken lived in Prince Rupert, Matsqui, twice in Halifax and Victoria.
That meant that she had friends from coast to coast with whom she delighted
in keeping in touch, and in some cases going to visit them. For 18 years she
was a member of the Boy Scouts of Canada, having Cub packs on both coasts.
After some years as District Cub Master, she went onto being a trainer all
for which she was awarded the Medal of Merit, which she prized. She was also
of member of the Girl Guides of Canada, again on both coasts. She was a
member of the 2nd Trefoil Guild (Girl Guides) and the B-P Guild (Boy
Scouts), both of Victoria. She was an employee of the Greater Victoria
School Board serving as a secretary in elementary schools and two junior
high secondary schools: Arbutus and S.J. Willis. She was a proud, early
member of Local 947 C.U.P.E.the "inside " workers of the Greater Victoria
School Board. She held various offices before becoming President for two
terms. She was also on the executive of C.U.P.E.'s Island Council and the
B.C. Division. She was an Associate Member of the Chief and Petty Officers'
Association and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, #172. She loved to
embroider and knit, even having finished a project on occasion. She also
loved to play bridge. She leaves her friend of many years, Beryl Big Canoe;
Joanie Hockley, whom she loved dearly; and her neighbour and friend, Win
Jones. Many thanks to Dr. Murray Stanwood and the staff of the Renaissance,
where she lived for many years. She would like to give credit to all her
children for their unconditional love and support in all her endeavors from
the time they were young up to the present day. God Bless. In lieu of
flowers, donations can be made to Our Place, BC Heart & Stroke or the
charity of your choice. Service at St. Mathias Anglican Church, 600 Richmond
Ave., Thursday March 29 at 1 pm. 352725
