Lolita Doherty It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of
Lolita Pearl Doherty. Lolita was born February 22, 1932 to George & Lillian
Hunden of Courtenay, and into three pioneer Comox Valley families. Lolita
married Bernie Doherty on Nov. 6, 1954 and settled into raising a family.
Lolita will be remembered for warmth and loyalty of her friendship, her love
for the Lord, her service to the community and church, but above all, as a
wonderful mother and grandmother. She was predeceased by her parents. She is
survived by her loving husband, Bernie, by her children, Jean (Pat)
Scholefield, Barbara (Raghbir) Basi, Mary Houser, Peter (Lynn), Brian
(Carmen) and Glen (April); by 14 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, by
sisters Yvonne (Dave) Bond and Georgina (Allen) Houghton, by sisterin-law
Raeburn Orr, and by several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be
held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2007 at the United Church of Canada, 415
Pinecrest Road, Campbell River, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations would be
appreciated by the First Open Heart Society, P.O. Box 175, Campbell River,

FRASER Frank Leonard 1929 2007 Frank passed away on March 29, 2007. He is
survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Glenys. Also survived by son, Gary;
and daughters: Sherri (Jim) and Sandy; grandchildren: Eric, Brad, Jessica,
Lisa, Ali, Kellan and Claire; sister, Shirley (Nat) Eccleston; brothers:
John and Gary (Diane) and Dick; sisters-inlaw: Shirlee (Bill) Wymer, Delphia
Evans; and several nieces and nephews. Especially Ray Evans who visited
often to retell hunting and fishing stories. A special thanks to Dr. Jansen
for his care. No service by Franks, request (cremation). In lieu of flowers,
donations to the Nanaimo Hospital Palliative Care Unit or to the Mid-Island

Douglas James Mactaggart It is with great sadness that we announce the
passing of Douglas James Mactaggart, at 87 years, on March 26th, 2007 at
home in Courtenay. Douglas passed away with his family at his side. Douglas
is survived by daughter, Joanna (Doug) and grandchildren, David and Erin;
son, Ian (Dawn) and step-grandchildren Robyn and Brett. He was predeceased
by is wife Diana, father Robert and stepmother Gertrude Mactaggart. Douglas
served as an officer in the Royal Navy during WWII on cruisers and corvettes
escorting convoys on both the North Atlantic and Mermansk convoy runs. His
adventure continued in Abadan as a mechanical engineer following which he
immigrated to Canada in 1948 where he worked as a chief engineer operating
on vessels along the Mackenzie River. He and Diana were married in 1951. He
joined Trans Mountain Pipeline company in 1953 and built many lasting
friendships along with an accomplished career. He retired to Vancouver
Island in 1982 where his circle of friends continued to grow due to his
outgoing nature and undying sense of humour. His love of life was reflected
in his gardening, photography and his respect for nature. We are truly
blessed to have had such a caring and devoted father. There will be no

Michael Francis "Frank" McCAFFREY April 12, 1931 March 29, 2007 Passed away
at St. Joseph's Hospital, surrounded by family, after a brief struggle with
cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, Freda and Tina, son
James Francis and granddaughter Breanna Mary. Frank is survived and will be
greatly missed by Mary his loving wife of 51 years, his sons; Michael
(Melissa) and Paul (Cheryl), his daughters; Noreen and Sheila,
grandchildren; Paula, Rory, Megan, Katie, Samuel, Adam, Lily and Grace, his
brother Fred (Trish), sister Ursula and nieces and nephews; Trenna, Caitlen,
Anthony, Leslie, Ciaran, Aidan and Patrick (Ireland). Frank was a member of
the Knights of Columbus and an Associate Member of The Sisters of St.
Joseph's. He retired as chief engineer of St. Joseph's Hospital. Frank was
ÃMr. Fix-itÄ and a keen bird watcher. Thanks to the Homecare Nurses women
with a true calling to care giving and to the Emergency and Third Floor
staff. Thanks also to Dr. Moise and Comox Medical staff. Flowers gratefully
declined. If friends so wish, donations in Frank's memory made to St.
Joseph's Hospital Foundation, 2137 Comox Ave., Comox, B.C. V9M 1P2 would be

Mary Gilbert Mitchell Born November 11, 1925 Newton Stewart Scotland Died
March 31, 2007 Ladysmith B.C. Survived by her loving husband of 39 years
John (Smokey) Mitchell, daughter Joanne (Wayne), sons Rob (Leslie) & Keith,
grandchildren Christopher (JoAnna), Jean, Rylie & Ava, great grandchildren
Colby & Andrew, sister-in-law Lillian English, nieces, nephews & many
friends. Mary was a Veteran & member of the R.C. Legion, Ladysmith Hospital
Auxiliary & Ladysmith Hospital Board. There are no words to express our
thanks to Dr. Lang & the staff of Ladysmith Hospital. No funeral by request.

PATRICK Ruth Joy April 07, 1918 March 28, 2007 Ruth passed peacefully at
Nanaimo Travellers Lodge. She lived in Alberta, mainly Wayne, Drumheller and
Hinton until moving to Nanaimo in 1981. Predeceased by husband, Bill;
brother, Bob; grandson, Stephen and 4 brothers-in-law. Left to remember her
are: daughter, Joy; granddaughters: Theresa (Lorne), Heather (Andrew); great
grandson, Mark; sisters: Miriel, Betty, Ethel, Jean; brother, Alan (Ivy);
sisters-in-law; Margaret and May; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
The family are grateful for the loving care Ruth received while at Nanaimo
Travellers Lodge. A celebration of Ruth's life will be held in Nanaimo,
prior to interment in Hinton, Alberta cemetery. In lieu of flowers a
donation in Ruth's memory may be made to the Cancer Society or Haven

PEACE Melvin Wayne The family of Melvin Wayne Peace is saddened to announce
his sudden passing Friday morning during open-heart surgery in Victoria.
Wayne was born in Ft. St. John on July 13, 1962 and raised in Nanaimo with
his three brothers. Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Tanya and three
sons: Charlie, Clayton and Carter; by his mother, Carole (Roy); and his
father, Francis (Marlene); by his three brothers: Cole (Cathy), Boyd (Lisa),
and Tyler (Susan); and many nieces and nephews; by his mother-in-law, Judy
(Tom); by his brother-in-law, Greg (Troy-Anne) and sister-in-law, Cheryl
(Cory). Wayne was respected and loved by many friends, coworkers in
forestry, members of the rugby fraternity, and parents and children in youth
hockey, soccer and lacrosse. He was admired for his sense of fair play, his
honesty, his sense of humour; his knowledge of the community and world
affairs, and, his high regard for family values. Wayne was able to resolve
problems and challenges in a manner, which was accepted by those who were
privileged to call him their friend. Most importantly was his devotion to
and interaction with his three sons and his wife Tanya. Wayne was an
outstanding rugby player. He played for many years with the Nanaimo Hornets
Rugby Club and the Cowichan Rugby Club with his greatest achievement being
starting for British Columbia and winning the national rugby championship.
He also was selected to play in international rugby in New Zealand,
Barbados, Wales, the United States and England. Wayne was also an ardent
fisherman and loved the outdoors. Wayne worked for 26 years at Northwest Bay
where he was employed in various positions and was the chargehand at the dry
land log sort at the time of his passing. During his years in the logging
industry, Wayne served as a first aid attendant and was the union shop
steward. A memorial service for Wayne will be held at St. Andrew's Church on
Wesley Street at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5. A reception will follow at
the Nanaimo Hornet's Rugby Clubhouse on Dover Road. The Peace family has
been overwhelmed with the expressions of support and contributions of food
and refreshment during the days following Wayne's passing and would like to
offer their appreciation. In-lieu-of flowers, donations may be made in

RAYNOR, James Alfred: Born May 14, 1957 in Port Alberni, BC passed away
March 28, 2007 at Nanaimo Regional Hospital Palliative Care Ward, at the age
of 49 years. Jim is survived and sadly missed by his wife, Mary and
daughter, Leila. Predeceased by his parents, Al and Florrye; he is also
survived by his sisters, Aleeta (Kevin) and Maureen; mother-in-law, May;
brothers-in-law, Wally, Ben (Glenda) and nieces and nephews: Riza (Chad),
Jennifer, Laura, Krista, Nathan, Cameron, Benjamin and also many aunts,
uncles and cousins. Working in the logging industry for 30 years, Jim was a
great lover of nature and the outdoors and he spent many hours exploring the
roads and beaches of Vancouver Island. He was well respected by his fellow
workers where he spent his working years in the Franklin and Sarita River
areas working firstly for MacMillan Bloedel and then Weyerhauser and Hayes
Logging. Jim was a dedicated family man and a true friend to his buddies. He
was known for his physical strength and was generous with his time in
helping out others when called upon. A dedicated vegetable gardener he also
had a passion for his vintage trucks and cars and loved a game of pool on
the family pool table. There will be no funeral at Jim's request and his
ashes will be scattered at his favorite spot at a private family gathering.
Memorial donations in Jim's memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer
Society or to a local Hospice Society. 84167


William VINCENT Air Vice Marshall (ret) William HO. (Bill) Vincent turned on
final with wheels down and locked for the last time on March 30, 2007,
passing away peacefully at St. Josephs Hospital in Comox at the age of 85.
Bill was predeceased by his Father, Horace Gordon Vincent and Mother Alice,
Brother Peter Gordon killed whilst on active service in 1944, Brother Carl
Denis in 1988. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret of 63 years,
daughter Ann Patricia of Nanaimo, son Peter Gordon of Salt Spring Island,
son John of Cumberland, sister Joan (Collins) of Calgary, granddaughter
Tracy Lynn (MacInnis) of Edmonton, Grandson Cpl Ryan Stewart (Howlett) of
Edmonton, and five great grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Trevor (MacInnis)
and Jordon and Carissa (Cooney) of Edmonton Alta. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba
on January 31st, 1922. Bill graduated from Lord Byng High School, Vancouver
in 1940. He joined the RCAF graduating as a Sgt. Pilot and proceeded to the
UK in 1942 where he trained as a night fighter pilot. Bill completed two
tours of operations with 409 and 410 night fighter squadrons on Night
Fighter and Intruder operations, flying Beaufighter and Mosquito aircraft
over UK and Europe for five years at the sharp end. Following WWII, Bill
remained in the RCAF and became Commanding Officer of 409 Squadron Comox in
1965. Base Commander CFB Cold Lake, Alta, 1967. Canadian Air Attache London
England 1971. His final assignment in his military career was a s Commander
of Air Defence Command/Fighter Group and 22nd NORAD Region all HQs
co-located at North Bay Ont. 1975 After retirement in 1977, Bill wanted to
contribute to his community, he was elected an Alderman in the town of Comox
and served in that capacity for 18 years. Concurrently he was Director &
Chairman of St. Josephs Hospital Board in Comox for 10 years. Director &
Chairman of the Comox Valley sanitary sewer commission for 15 years,
Chairman of the Comox Valley Association for Mentally Handicapped People for
25 years, President of the Canadian Fighter Pilot's Association (Western
Region). He was a member of the Canadian Legion (Comox Branch) the Airforce
Association, 888 Wing Comox. He was a volunteer Coroner, investigating light
aircraft accidents in BC for a few years in the early eighties. In 2005 bill
became chairman of BC Special Olympics Summer Games held in the Comox Valley
in June 2005. In 2006 Bill was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary
Foundation of Rotary Internation in appreciation of assistance and friendly
relations among peoples of the world. At a Special Meeting of Comox Council
on July 15, 2006 Bill was conferred with the ÃFreedom of the TownÄ awarded
in recognition of his commitment, dedication, and service to the community.
Bill will be remembered for his contributions and dedication to his country
and community. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 11th at
2:00pm from St. Michael's and All Angels Protestant Chapel 19 Wing comox,
with the Reverend Maggie Enwright officiating. Arrangements entrusted to
COMOX VALLEY FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORIUM, 1101 Ryan Road, Courtenay. Should
friends wish, donations in Bill's memory to the Beaufort Association for
