HANSEN _ Nancy Anne October 5, 1920 - May 9, 2007 It is with profound
sadness that we announce the passing of an extraordinary person - our Mom,
Nancy. Mom's life was full and well lived; she often spoke of her high
school days in Edmonton where she was elected first female President of her
school. She ran on the platform "grit, go and gumption" which resonated with
everything she did later in life. Nancy was a metaphor for optimism and good
will; she and Warren spoke often of the many friends that added such joy to
their lives. Nancy was a proud member of Kiwassa and most other
organizations that touched the lives of her children. She was a loving wife
to Warren and first class mother to son Wayne, (wife Pamela and children
Sandra, Julie, Michael), son Douglas, (wife Elizabeth and children Bradley
and Curtis) and to daughter Barbara, (husband Jacky and children Christopher
and Alexandra). Nancy will be lovingly remembered and cherished by her
husband Warren, her children and grandchildren and sisters May Lees and
Jeanine Hinds and brother Jim Pate. She is predeceased by her sister Sally.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff on Evergreen 2
South for the compassionate care given to our mother. A celebration of
Nancy's life will be held at West Vancouver United Church, 2062 Esquimalt
Avenue, West Vancouver on Monday, May 14, 2007 at 11am. Kindness in words
creates confidence, kindness in thinking creates profoundness, kindness in
giving creates love. Thank you for your love Mom. Hollyburn Funeral Home

beautiful Verna. Verna was predeceased by her parents George and Eudokia
Sibyk, brothers Matthew and Mike, sisters Mary, Victoria and Dorothy. Verna
was also predeceased by life-long friends, Ilah and Lloyd Batten and Beth
Grimes (Phil). Verna and Jack met during the war, came to BC in 1948 and
Cloverdale in 1951 where they opened Hassall's Florist and Verna became the
first woman president of a local Chamber of Commerce, quite an accolade for
the time. When their family had fled the nest, they found and moved to their
beloved Texada Island in 1964 where they built the home of their dreams,
owned and operated M & M Hardware and Variety and spent the happiest years
of their life. Verna's last year at Kinsmen Place Lodge, where she was
lovingly cherished by Jack and cared for by the wonderful staff was a year
of peace and blessing before passing quietly away. A Celebration of Life

LAI _ Leo Man-On June 28, 1949 - May 10, 2007 The world lost a dash of
charm, a pinch of curiosity and a recipe for a devoted family man when Leo
Lai passed away peacefully on May 10. Struggles, he had plenty, achievements
he had much more. All of this, he willed himself on with strength and class.
He leaves behind a family with an abundance of memories - his wife, Fanny,
and two sons, Tim and Jon. Also, his brother, Ming Sai, sisters, Fiona and
Esther, their families and many others dear to him. Leo is predeceased by
his mother, father and Philip, his eldest brother. Born in Hong Kong to
modest means, he set out to the United States for multiple university
degrees before settling in the Lower Mainland with Fanny for nearly 30 years
of marriage. Soccer and hockey games, homework help, masterful meals and
family globetrotting were never a footnote during a successful career in the
insurance and financial sector. He taught us to dream, but made our reality
points of conversation. Leo's enthusiasm matured Richmond through tireless
involvement. And in return, we proudly offer a toast to a man who made life
definitely more interesting. Thanks go to the staff at the Palliative Care
Unit at VGH for their support and care. In lieu of flowers, a donation can
be made in his memory to the VGH Foundation. To send condolences, please
visit www.kearneyfs.com A memorial service will be held at the Minoru Chapel
in Richmond on May 18th at 1:30 pm with a brief reception to follow at
Gateway Theatre. What awaits you is limitless. Love and laughter be with
you, Leo, always.

to her community. She was a member and past treasurer of the service club
Women of the Moose, past president of the Surrey chapter of the Arthritis

she thrived on the company of her friends there, and on the loving care of
the staff. Her greatest wish was to stay in her home for as long as

McFARLANE _ Evelyn Joan (nee Maryan) Born March 3, 1922 in London, England,
died peacefully at home in Burnaby April 11, 2007, aged 85. Joan is survived
by her son Andrew (and Karen) McFarlane and grandchildren Alana and James in
Surrey; her son Ian (and Susan) McFarlane in Burnaby; and her daughter
Carole (and Tom) Easton in Campbell River and granddaughter Jennifer (and
Chris) Boubouras in Australia. As well, her family includes her sister Ann
(and Wayne) Littleton in California and her brother Stan Maryan in England.
She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years Thomas Alexander McFarlane in
2001 and her brother Thomas Maryan in England in 1995. In 1946, Joan came to
Canada from England - to Burnaby - as the war-bride of a returning Canadian
soldier, with their daughter. She and Tom then moved to Richmond, where
their two sons were born. Their work took them throughout BC, to Prince
George, Surrey and back to Burnaby. There were several memorable years in
the Interior, during which they hosted many travellers at the Chilcotin
Lodge, in Riske Creek. Joan and Tom had their last years together in North
Delta, and she moved back - once more - to Burnaby several years ago. A
literate woman, she lived a life that had been at times Dickensian or
Orwellian, but never commonplace. She instilled a love of learning in her
children, and indeed achieved her own life-long dream when, in her fifties,
she began and completed a bachelor's degree. As she wished, there was no
service, nor memorial gathering. No flowers, please, but those who wish to
donate in her memory may do so to a charity of their choice. She cherished
writing and reading, and it would be fitting if donations were related in
some way to those passions.
