LANDRY _ Owen William November 27, 1943 - August 5, 2007 How does one
describe a man like Owen Landry? There is not just one, there are many and I
have been privileged and honoured to know all. Owen was a loving husband for
33 years, a wonderful father for 26, brother-in-law to my siblings and their
spouses, uncle to our niece and nephew, great uncle, mentor to fellow
co-workers, loving son, nephew and cousin, neighbour and life-long friend to
many - far too many to comprehend. He was an avid hunter, fisherman - both
saltwater and freshwater, fly-tying fiend, camping enthusiast, boater, trap
shooter, gardener, champion for the declining salmon and herring population,
member of the volunteer organization Oyster River Enhancement Society, UBC
Farm Park Chairman, joke-teller extraordinaire, WWII junkie, excellent cook,
practical joker, one of the most generous persons I have ever known, and the
list goes on. At a fairly recent "debauchery" he won the title for telling
jokes long after everyone had run out of ideas. Nobody could believe the
variety of subjects that this man could come up with a joke for. Owen could
give a hug. No, not just any hug. He would envelope you and almost squeeze
the breath out of you. If you were ever given the opportunity to be hugged
by him you know what I mean. It is with supreme sadness that I must put
these words together. Owen has lost his battle with cancer - a scourge on
our society. Remember him fondly and with a smile. He would want it that
way. As a footnote, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to our
family doctor John Fitzpatrick, and the medical staff at St. Joseph's
Hospital in Comox, in the Emergency Room and in particular the third floor
nursing staff - Mandy, Heather, Valerie, Paula and Lori who treated him with
respect and compassion in his final hours. _ His loving wife Sue Private
family arrangements entrusted to Comox Valley Funeral Home, Cremation and
Reception Centre, 1101 Ryan Road, Courtenay. For those wishing, donations in
Owen's memory to a charity of choice would be appreciated.
