DEVERELL, Katherine Jean (Kay) Died peacefully, in the presence of family,
on August 7th, 2007, in her 89th year, at Leaside Retirement Residence,
Toronto, ON, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Kay was an
accomplished home manager and hostess who cared about her community. She
began adult life as a schoolteacher, then devoted 15 years to caring for
three children before building a third career as a successful realtor to
many University of Saskatchewan faculty members. Our mother was a fundraiser
for the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, a duplicate bridge shark and a
lifelong learner who never failed to recommend the latest best book" and to
encourage independence in her offspring. She taught us to live good values,
to take care of ourselves, and to be caring and considerate of others. She
was born on April 30th, 1919 in Sioux Lookout, Ontario, eldest daughter of
Peter Gordon McPherson and Nettie Louella McPherson (nee Perrin).
Predeceased by her brothers John and Hugh (Hugo) McPherson and survived by
her brother Neil and his wife Veronica McPherson, her three children (John
Frederick Deverell, Frances Leigh Deverell, and Peter McPherson Deverell)
her grandchildren (Sage, Basil and Ginger (by Peter); Murray, Rakael, and
Vanessa (by John) and Karen Abramson (by Frances), and great grandchildren
(Riley, Sidney, and Leah (by Basil and Brandi Deverell). Kay grew up in
Sioux Lookout until age 10 when her father, a United Church Minister, moved
the family to Leduc, Alberta. She attended normal school in Edmonton, where
she met her future husband, Alfred Frederick Deverell. They married August
16th, 1941, just before Fred enlisted. Kay lived in Winnipeg with her mother
and gave birth to her first son while Fred served overseas. After the war
Fred took a posting at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, where
they raised their family. Upon retirement in 1974 they moved to Victoria,
B.C. where Fred died (1992). Kay moved to Toronto in 2005 to be closer to
family. We thank the caring teams at Berwick House in Victoria and Leaside
Retirement Residence in Toronto for their excellent support to Kay in her
last years. If you wish to acknowledge your memories of Katherine Deverell
please send donations to Parkinson Society Canada or the CNIB. Send cards to
Frances Deverell, #2 Barnaby Pvt., Ottawa, K1K 4S4. 398733
