born in Farningham, Kent, England, August 26, 1912. He served his country in
World War II as a pilot for the Air Transport Auxiliary. In 1947 he

Yolande became a loving mother to Roy's three boys and together they had two

fine Tudor homes in the Victoria area. He was a member of the Air Crew
Association (Sidney), a member of the Air Transport Auxiliary Association

flying and especially his love of Spitfires. He instilled the joy of boating
and cruising the Gulf Islands in all his children and their families. Roy is
survived by his loving friend and companion, Margaret Campbell. He also
leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife Yolande, who was at his side
for 45 years, his sons and daughters, Bill Coleman (Isabel), John Coleman

JOHNSTON, Agnes Ellen (nee Wishart) Also known as Nan or Nance, passed away
on August 22, 2007 after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
Predeceased in 2002 by her adoring husband, William Dalglish Johnston, Nan
leaves behind her children, Joan Scroggs, John Johnston (Kathy), Lynda
Farmer (Murray); grandchildren, Ian, Bill (Wendi), Rob, Allison, David and
Louise; great grandchildren, Conor, Clare, Emma, Hannah, Jade and Nick; her
beloved nieces and nephews; extended family; brother-in-law, George Moody
Johnston; and countless friends, many life-long, young and old all so
special to her. Born in MacNutt, Saskatchewan on January 28, 1915, Nan was
daughter to Ramona Josephine Boldt and Alan Wishart and sister to Loyd,
Margaret, Walter and Douglas, all deceased. With the unexpected death of her
father when Nan was two years of age, her maternal grandfather, Carl Julius
Boldt, `the kindest man I ever knew,' came to live with the family. Her
family re-located to Russell, Manitoba and when Nan was ten years old they
moved west to make a new home in New Westminster, BC. Nan settled into her
new life becoming involved with Sixth Avenue United Church where she, along
with her brother Loyd, were active in Young Peoples, an association that
gave her a life-time of wonderful memories. During her school years she
excelled at Math, a subject she loved throughout her life. Following
graduation Nan's working life began as a psychiatric nurse at Woodlands
School in New Westminster where she worked until her marriage. Later in her
life, she joined her husband's shoe business, Johnston's Shoe Store, a
business started in 1859 by her husband's grandfather, early BC pioneer,
William Johnston. There she worked for 25 years also becoming active in the
New Westminster Downtown Business Association. Nan and Bill's family home on
Queens Avenue in the Royal City, built in 1911 by her father-in-law and
mother-in-law, became a gathering place for family and friends and it is
here that many more cherished memories were formed. Nan volunteered in many
community roles and taught Explorers at Queens Avenue United Church in New
Westminster, being awarded a life membership with the United Church Women's,
an honour for which she was forever proud. She was also active with the
IODE, New Westminster Branch. On Nan and Bill's retirement they moved to
Sidney, BC. Here Nan formed many new and special friendships. Each day she
rose with purpose and spent her time in productive ways, whether applying
her artistic and creative talents to her many projects, attending to her
flowers or knitting the hundreds of toques that she gave to the Open Door
for distribution to those in need. Her evenings were spent on the phone,
staying in touch with her many friends and family around the province and
country. Nan's was an abundant life, lived with commitment, compassion and a
sincere love for others encouraging those whose lives she touched to live
their own lives well. Words cannot express her family's gratitude to Dr.
Hartrick and Lee and Dr. and Mrs. Davis for their expert care and
friendship, especially during these past few weeks. Thank you, most
sincerely, to the nursing staff at Saanich Peninsula Hospital, for their
care and loving support, and to the Palliative Care Program Volunteers. And
to niece Deborah Churchill, thank you for your unfailing support at a time
of great need. A Service of Remembrance to celebrate and honour Nan's life
will be held on September 1, 2007 at 1:30 PM at St Paul's United Church,
2410 Malaview Ave., Sidney, BC. Donations may be made in Nan's memory, to
the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation, Palliative Care Program at 2166

RICHES, James William God's finger touched him, and he slept. It is with
sadness that we announce the passing of James William Riches peacefully at
Royal Jubilee Hospital Hospice in Victoria. He was born November 8, 1929 to
John and Margaret in Yorkshire, England. Predeceased by his 3 brothers John,
Alex, and David. Survived by his only sister Margaret who he loved dearly,
her husband, Tommy and family all in Scotland. Our family also lived in
Scotland, and then moved to Ontario. Our father spent his last 3 1/2 years
in Victoria. He enjoyed going down the causeway and sitting for hours
looking at the boats and talking with anyone who would listen. He loved to
tell stories. He was an Army and Navy man; he had such a passion for animals
especially for greyhounds and birds. He was a boxer, he loved to dance and
sing. He had seven children, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren,
with one little miracle on the way. Thanks to the staff of Victoria General
Hospital. Our family would also like to thank the Royal Jubilee Hospital
Hospice, Dr. Saunders, and the compassionate nurses and volunteers that
cared for our father with grace and dignity right to the end. He will be
laid to rest in Hamilton, Ontario. As your great grandson said Now you'll
have your brothers to play with. If you came back from heaven, would it be
like it was then, we'd all pick up where we left off and try it all again,
Oh if you came back from Heaven it would freeze us in our tracks, and I hope
God knows if he let you go, we'd never send you back". God Bless You. Love
