BIENERT Matthew Ryan April 9, 1979 - October 13, 2007 Matthew Bienert,
beloved husband of Laurie Bienert (nee Sukovieff) passed away on Saturday,
October 13, 2007 at the age of 28 years. Profoundly missed is the smile that
dazzled everyone it shined upon; the compassion, sincerity, warmth, and
optimism always felt by his presence; and the enthusiasm, brilliance and
passion of our Smiling Sparkle of the skies and our hearts. Forever
remembered is the boundless laughter and ever-present joy of a son and
brother; and the love, moments and adventures shared in the strongest,
deepest bond of friendship, life and spirit with a husband. Matthew was born
in Calgary, AB on April 9, 1979 and from the age of four years old and on he
grew up in Springbank, AB. After graduating from Springbank Community High

Island, BC. Matthew's strength was unyieldingly demonstrated in the advent
of challenge, instinctively and persistently turning adversity into
accomplishment. Matthew, with relentless perseverance and skill, fulfilled
his passion as a successful, phenomenal pilot. On the happiest day of their
lives, Matthew married his best friend and true love, Laurie, on August 26,
2006 in Calgary, AB. After spending many wonderful days together in Calgary,
Matthew and Laurie moved to Vancouver Island in April of 2007. Cherished are
the many laughs and the love Laurie shared with her "Smiley Eyes". Matthew

Theresa (Teresa) Maria Bono January 1, 1910 - October 7, 2007 The family of
Theresa Maria Bono is saddened to announce her passing on October 7, 2007 in
St. Paul's Hospital. Nearly 98 years ago, she was also born in this same
hospital. Theresa, also lovingly known as ''Nana'', is survived by her three
children: Mary laci, Seattle; Joseph Bono, Vancouver; Peter Bono (Barbara),
Tsawwassen; Grandchildren: Vince Iaci (Mary Pat), Seattle; Darlene

Over many years, Theresa worshipped at the Holy Rosary Cathedral in
Vancouver and for 40+ years was an active member of the Catholic Womens'
League. She always looked forward to the church teas and bazaars. She loved
to talk and socialize with her many friends and acquaintances. Theresa's
skills were many -- most noteworthy were the delicious meals that she
prepared for any and all who visited her home. There was always lots of
laughter and fun at these meals. As well, she was an extremely talented
knitter and crotchetier -- there were many beautiful pieces of clothing
prepared for her children and grandchildren over the years. During Theresa's
life time, many were blessed by her strong feisty spirit and keen sense of
humor. She will be dearly missed and always loved and remembered. The family
would like to acknowledge and thank the St. Paul's Hospital staff who cared
for her during her last few weeks of life in their ward. A private service
for Theresa's immediate family and friends was held on October 15th in the
Holy Rosary Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Theresa

BORTHWICK Roy McIntosh July 28, 1920 October 15, 2007 It was with heavy
hearts that we said goodbye for the last time to our beloved husband and
father, Roy. He is survived by his loving wife June (Lari) and devoted sons
Steve (Susan) and Jim (Tess) as well as nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his sister Jean and brothers Jim and John. Roy had a
wonderful life. Vancouver born, he attended Magee high school where he was
an excellent scholar and an athlete on the school rugby, basketball and swim
teams. He also enjoyed training as a Seaforth Highlander cadet. Summers were
spent sailing and swimming in Howe Sound at the family cottage on Keats
Island. Roy joined the RCAF in 1941 and spent the next couple of years as a
flight instructor and flying U-boat patrol on Canada's east coast. He was
then sent to India where he flew B-24 Liberator bombers. In the South East
Asia Command, Roy was the first pilot to complete a 400-hour tour of
operations. He was awarded the DFC for many successful missions, including a
strike on a bridge on the River Kwai. His DFC citation reads "Throughout,
this officer has displayed cool judgement, courage and great devotion to
duty". He was a member of both the Burma Bomber and Burma Star associations.
Upon his return to Vancouver, he was delighted to hit the ski slopes and
start sailing again. He and Lari shared their love of the outdoors with
their sons. Roy worked as a marketing manager in several businesses
including the B&K Economy Stores, where he successfully introduced some
innovative advertising. After some years Roy and partner John Rogers
purchased a small company and developed it into a thriving business. As a
long time member of the WVYC and the zany Flat Earth Society, many summers
were spent exploring the BC coast. His 50th birthday was spent as navigator
and crew member on a friend's yacht that won its division while competing in
the Victoria to Maui sailing classic. In his 60's he joined Lari in the
sport of masters swimming. After his retirement the two of them spent many
happy winters touring the southwestern United States and Mexico. They
celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past summer. Roy survived
four different cancers with never a complaint nor a `why me?'. He was always
generous, kind and considerate of other people and his love of life and wry
sense of humour always made it fun to be in his company. Thank you, Roy, for
all you have taught us. You will be sorely missed and remembered with love.
Our heartfelt thanks go to Dr. Paisley Howard and the caring staff at
Inglewood Manor. By request there will be no service. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to a charity of choice.

BROWN Barbara Janet (11 January 1964 -15 October 2007) Peacefully but far
too soon, at the age of forty-three Barb passed away suddenly at St. Paul's
Hospital, Vancouver, BC, on Monday, October 15th, 2007. Barb was above-all a
decent human being a committed activist and educator, a fine friend, a
charming, smart, often irreverent and always complex woman. She leaves
behind many family members, friends sand colleagues who are shocked and
grieved by her sudden death, notably her beloved husband Mike Dumler,
parents Lois and Dave, sisters Lynn and Catherine (Larry), brother Gordon,
great-uncle Walt, aunts Joan, Marion and Donalda, and many cousins. Barb was
raised in Burnaby, graduating from Burnaby North Secondary in 1981, and

role as head of the Faculty Association at College of the Rockies. Shortly
after returning to Vancouver, she moved from post-secondary education into
full-time union work, first with the Canadian Union of Public Employees,
then with the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators, where she was working
at the time of her death. In both posts, she used her articulate, persuasive
intelligence and her compassion to advocate for workers' rights and dignity.
Barb was blessed in love and family as well. For the past six years, she
found home and happiness in the love of husband Mike. Together, they shared
many passions for social justice, for family and friends, for books and folk
music, for ''the boys'' (Rebus and Theo), and fat travel to hot, sunny
places. Barb quickly grew to love Mike's three children, Aaron. Matthew and
Michelle, and they her. She also took to heart her role as ''Auntie Barb''
to Meg Stainsby's daughters Tillie and Erin, whom she also loved. A memorial

(Memoriam)
KOZAR Tom Passed away suddenly on October 7, 2007 at 65 years of age.
Brother Kozar was born in Toronto and raised in the Okanagan; the son of
John and Jean (Ewen) Kozar and the grandson of political activist Tom
McEwen. His father, who died before Tom's birth, was a volunteer in the
antifascist MacKenzie-Papineau Battalion that fought in the Spanish Civil
War. Tom's mother spent six years nursing in China, two of which as a
nursing assistant to Dr. Norman Bethune. Brother Kozar's work life began as
a west coast faller, but a logging accident in 1966 led to a career change
and ultimately his second calling, as a Vocational Instructor in Mechanics
at BCIT. Not surprisingly, he became a union shop steward the day after the
end of his probationary period. A highly respected and well-loved former
leader of the BC Government & Service Employees Union, Tom served the rank &
file as Component Chair of General Services from 1980 1982, BCGEU Treasurer
from 1982 1987 and BCGEU Vice President from 1993 until his retirement in
1999. Among his many contributions was the establishment of a partnership
between the union's International Solidarity Committee and CoDevelopment
Canada. Tom's work and tireless effort in promoting the importance of
government support for technical and trades' training was visionary;
especially for his prediction of the critical labour shortage we are
experiencing today. A man of selfless and unpretentious good works, Tom
Kozar gave both his time and money to many charitable endeavours. The United
Way, Habitat for Humanity, the Labour Community Christmas Dinners and many
an individual down on their luck were among the beneficiaries of his
unheralded kindness. Brother Kozar earned the nickname ''The Bard of The
Labour Movement'' for his eloquent and impassioned oratory. A brilliant and
highly entertaining speaker, his causes ranged from the plight of Leonard
Peltier to the recognition of Canadian Merchant Seamen. But nothing defined
Tom as clearly as his successful campaign to build the ''Spirit of the
Republic''; the magnificent monument at BC's provincial legislature which
pays homage to the Canadian veterans of the Spanish Civil War. Tom Kozar was
a dear friend to many in the labour family. His absence will be deeply felt.
Each Sister and Brother cherishes many fond memories of Tom. He is an
irreplaceable comrade. Brother Kozar was always very proud of his daughter,
Seana, and granddaughter, Miranda. He is also survived by his sister, Laura
Meyers, brother, Mike Kovich, and uncles Sean and Norm McEwan. A Celebration
of Tom Kozar's life will be held Monday, October 29, 2007 at 1:00 pm at the
Operating Engineers Hall, 4333 Ledger Avenue, Burnaby BC.

vonSivers Olaf Henry June 15, 1929 - October 13, 2007 It is with sadness
that we announce the passing of our dad and grandpa. Born into a family of
nobility in Riga, Latvia Olaf was the oldest son of Werner and Marie Luise
(nee Baroness von Nolde). As the threat of war approached their home, the
family had to escape. Olaf spent most of his youth in Poland and Germany
before he boarded a ship to Halifax in 1952. Over time Olaf made his way
across Canada and eventually he settled in Vancouver. Olaf approached his
new life in Canada with eagerness and hard work. Within a short time, he
started working at Continental Can in Burnaby, working his way up to be a
production foreman where he remained until he retired. Together with his
wife Julie, they settled in New Westminster where their son Peter was born
and later relocated to Coquitlam where daughter Gina-Monique completed the
family. Olaf was a very active ham radio operator (VE7ON-VE7XS). Over the
years, Olaf made friendships both near and far on the air. He lived for his
radio schedule and no matter what; Olaf was on the air every day at 4:30 PM.
This was his special time with Uncle Pete, Dr. Finley, Ossie, Blackie and
John to name a few. Olaf was a true friend and will be remembered for his
polite soft spoken ways. Our family Peter, Helena, Gina-Monique;
grandchildren Julius, Eric and Oliver and siblings Gisela, Peter and Isa
will greatly miss the scent of his coffee, the tune of his harmonica and the
twinkle in his eye. The family wishes to thank the staff of Queens Park Care
Center who cared for Olaf during his struggle with dementia. Respecting
Olaf's wishes, a private family service will be held. Columbia-Bowell
