ADAMS, Leonard (Carey) March 1, 1925 December 27, 2007 Born near Manchester,
England, Carey grew up in Michel, BC, in the Natal Valley. At fifteen, Carey
enlisted in the Canadian Army, and was part of D-Day landings in Normandy.
He fought with his Canadian Scottish Regiment in France until he was
captured at the Leopold Canal in Holland. En route to a prison camp in
Germany, Carey and nine others broke out of a boxcar and escaped. For five
months he evaded capture with the help of the Dutch underground before being
recaptured. After the war, Carey worked for the BC Provincial Police, the
Provincial government, then for Crofton Pulp and Paper. He opened his own
sporting goods stores in Campbell River (Carey's Sports Shop) and Duncan
(Rick's Sports Shop). Carey was very active in volunteering, notably in
minor hockey, where he was on the executives at both Fuller Lake and
Campbell River, and coached his sons' teams. He was also on the executives
of the Royal Canadian Legion in Duncan and Campbell River, volunteered with
other sports, was a driver for the Cancer Society and a blood donor. In
retirement, Carey and Pauline travelled with their fifth wheel to Alaska,
across Canada, and through the States, and enjoyed fishing off Vancouver
Island aboard their boat "Miss Muggins." Carey is predeceased by his parents
W.H. (Harry) and Doris Adams, as well as his sister Ada Starr. He is
survived by Pauline, his wife of 59 years; children Vicki Walker (Roger),
Richard, Maureen, Corky (Korrin), and Greg (Judy); and was "Poppa" to
grandchildren Brandon Walker (Erin), Marcie Walker, Ashley Picyk (Geoff
Suter), Chris, Bobby (Melissa), Cameron Picyk, Katie, Tanner, Cody, and
Chance; great-grandson Robbie Hart and a second great-grandchild on the way;
and his much-loved black lab, Toba. Carey's family would like to thank the
caring and supportive staff of Cowichan District Hospital and especially of
Cerwydden. In accordance with Carey's wishes there will be no service.
Friends are invited to join the family at 2pm on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at
the Quamichan Inn, 1478 Maple Bay Road, Duncan. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation, #4 466

MACDONALD, Edith Mary October 21st, 1925 ~ December 31st, 2007 Peacefully on
New Years Eve, Gramma Mac went on to join her love, George, who went before
her to make sure the place was OK. Edith always said she was born 100 years
to late, and wished she was around during the horse and buggy days. It would
be nice to think, that is where the two of them are now, enjoying a
leisurely buggy ride through the country hillsides, with a flask full of
"hot toddies" and warm memories. They will both be missed by many, but most
of all, by their family, 3 sons, David, James, and Ian, 3 grandchildren,
Shilanne, Logan, and Maryna, as well as brothers, nieces and nephews still
living in Scotland. It was moms wish that she be layed to rest with her
mother and father in Scotland, so there will be no service in Victoria. The
family would like to thank all those who took time from their busy day to
visit mom in hospital. Your kind words and visits made mom smile during a
difficult time, and for that, we are eternally grateful. We would like to
thankfully decline flowers and ask, if you have any elderly loved ones,
visit often, and bring a smile to someone who needs it. 435378

McLEOD Thomas Hector MacDonald (Tommy) Thomas McLeod was born in Weyburn,
Saskatchewan in August 1918. He was an only child. He took his schooling in
Weyburn, graduating from Weyburn Collegiate with honours. It was in Weyburn
that Tommy met T.C. Douglas, the young Baptist minister who would play such
an important role in his life. During the Depression, Douglas organized a
boys' group which devoted its time to sports and boxing, and to debating and
drama. Douglas was a graduate of Brandon College, and persuaded several of
his `boys' to attend that venerable institution. There Tommy received a BA
with distinction. After a Masters degree from Indiana University, he was
urged by President Evans to come back to Brandon to teach Economics, where
he stayed for three years and also met his beloved wife Beryl. In 1944, when
T.C. Douglas led the CCF party to a landslide election victory in
Saskatchewan, Premier Douglas asked Tommy to come and work for the new
government. Tommy said that he would have to consult with the College;
Douglas breezily replied that he had already sent his resignation to the
President. Thus began an exciting period of his life, beginning as advisor
to the premier and general troubleshooter, taking on assignments as
Secretary of Health Services Planning, Secretary of the Economic Planning
Board, Chair of the new Budget Bureau, and ending as Deputy Provincial
Treasurer. In between jobs, he earned two degrees from Harvard University, a
Masters in Public Administration and a PhD in Economics. When University of
Saskatchewan President W.P. Thompson called in 1952, offering the position
of Dean of the College of Commerce, Tommy decided to begin a new challenge.
He enjoyed the Saskatoon experience immensely. During this period he also
served on several boards and commissions, chairing the Saskatchewan
Commission on Taxation. In 1964 Tommy returned to Regina as Dean of Arts and
Vice Principal at the new university. In 1971, the Canadian International
Development Agency offered a broader mandate, where Tommy joined the senior
ranks of CIDA travellers, attempting to sort out administrative problems in
several countries, including Turkey, Iran, Nigeria, and Botswana. So the
family moved to Ottawa, where they stayed for 26 years. Tommy moved from
CIDA to the Federal Management Institute, acted as administrator of the
Anti-Inflation Board, and held other management positions. Among other
honours, he was especially pleased to be awarded the Vanier Medal from the
Institute of Public Administration in 1971 and the Order of Canada in 2003.
He co-wrote a popular biography of T.C. Douglas with his son Ian; Tommy
Douglas, Road to Jerusalem was published in 1987. In 1997 Tommy moved to
Victoria, loving the gardens and life style. He died there peacefully on New
Years' Day, 2008. He leaves behind his loving wife and companion of over 62
years, Beryl, children Beth Bilson, Ellen (John Heaney), Ian (Vicki McLeod),
Brian (Lorraine Thomas), and Morna (David Firman), grandchildren Max Bilson
(Jane Chapco), Kate Bilson (Paul Beke), Martin and Brendan Heaney, Adrienne
and Kelly Firman McLeod, and Tom and Will McLeod. His family and many
friends will remember his wit and wisdom, his sincere modesty, his devotion
to family, and pride in his children's many accomplishments, his unfailing
good humour, his rapport with students, his negotiating and administrative
skills, his ability to relate to almost everybody, and his keen interest in
music, books, cooking and gardening. Indicative of his wide ranging tastes
was that his favourite poets were Robert Burns and Rumi. (Epitaph) Know

SEIFRED, Dorothy Eva (Johnston) Dorothy passed away peacefully on January 2,
2008, at the age of 88 at Mt. Tolmie Extended Care Hospital in Victoria,
following a stroke. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by
her family: son John of Vancouver; daughter Anne Kirkaldy, husband Ron and
grandchildren Ewan of Nanaimo and Allison of Victoria; son Bruce, wife
Sandra Sobko and grandson Stefan of Calgary; and son Grant, wife, Marilyn
and grandchildren Alexander and Natasha of Burlington, Ontario. Dorothy was
predeceased in 2004 by her loving husband of 61 years Edward, in 1988 by her
eldest son Edward (Ted), and in the previous decade by her younger brother
Robert of Los Angeles, California. Born on April 1, 1919, in Winnipeg,
Dorothy graduated from the University of Manitoba with a BA and BEd. There
she met her future husband. They married in 1943 and started a family after
Ed's service overseas. Dorothy always maintained a loving home throughout
their frequent transfers across Western Canada in support of Ed's career as
a comptroller for Hudson's Bay Company. In 1978 Dorothy and Ed retired to
Victoria where they honed their golf and bridge skills, travelled the world
and first experienced the joys of grandparenting. Mom was a sweet and loving
woman and a most devoted, attentive and loving wife, mother, grandmother and
friend. She enjoyed her time with family and friends, her PEO sisters, her
balcony garden, reading, volunteering with the Everywoman's bookstore,
crosswords and Scrabble. Mom was the glue of our family, staying in touch
with friends and family across Canada with chatty phone calls and
exquisitely penned letters. As a mother of five, food and cooking figured
prominently in Dorothy's life. While the family fondly recalls their annual
camping trips, the logistics of feeding seven using a Coleman stove and
cooler may have made Dorothy's reminiscences slightly less glowing. Later in
retirement, Dorothy enjoyed whipping up many fabulous dishes for a gourmet
dining group. Though petite, Dorothy never ceased to amaze with her healthy
appetite. Her children carry on mom's legacy through an appreciation of food
and the continued preparation of treasured family recipes. A memorial
service will be held on Tuesday, January 8 at 10:00 a.m. at First Memorial
Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, followed by a reception. In
lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Many thanks to Agneta, Sheila, Ian and other devoted staff at Mt. Tolmie
Hospital who have been so kind and loving to Mom for the past three years.
