CALDERBANK, Kathleen (Kay) Doris (nee Rippengale) 10 March 1924 to 15
January 2008 Kay passed away peacefully on 15 January 2008 at The Lodge at
Broadmead, Victoria. Kay was born in Saskatoon and made Victoria her home
when she was 19. Kay met her future husband Ken on New Years Eve 1943 and
embarked on a lifetime of adventure. Kay achieved much in her life and was
very proud of her two sons. Ken was seconded to the Royal Navy for
submariners training in 1954. Kay's time overseas with the family in England
and Australia were well enjoyed and fondly remembered. She enjoyed the Navy
family, and especially the camaraderie of the submarine service. Kay's trips
across Canada from Halifax to Victoria in 1959 and 1960 were a real treat,
especially when she drove at over 100 miles per hour. Upon returning to
Canada in 1965, Kay and Ken built a home on an acreage in Deep Cove, North
Saanich. In 1972 they decided to return to Australia. Kay and Ken made two
trips completely around Australia, which were very special times. In 1979
Kay and Ken built another home east of Condong near Murwillumbah. Kay was
proud to have held dual Canadian and Australian citizenship. Kay and Ken
returned to Victoria in 1990, a few months before Ken passed away.
Throughout her life and travels Kay made many dear friends. For as long as
she was able she remained in contact with them, and visited many on her
several travels to Europe and Australia in the 1990's, and welcomed those
who visited Victoria. Declining mobility required a move into care in 2001.
Kay wasn't a complainer and bore her gradually failing heath with dignity.
The family would like to thank the staff of Broadmead for the thoughtful
care provided to Kay and Judith Strother for her warm companionship. Kay is
survived by sons Richard (Peggy) and Bruce (Louise), brother George (Renee),
nephew Robert, and nieces Wendy, Joan, Judy and Cindy. Kay was predeceased
by her husband Ken and brother Jack. A Memorial Service will be held at
First Memorial Funeral Services at 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria on Tuesday,
22 January at 2:00 PM with a reception afterwards. In lieu of flowers, as a
memorial to Kay donations can be made in aid of the Jeunes en Compassion
Orphanage Building Project in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. Cheques
may be made in the name of Judith Strother and mailed to 2315 Greenlands
