LUNDGREN, Bernice Ethel "Be " July 20, 1923 January 14, 2008 Be was born at
455 Dockyard Road in Esquimalt and was a lifelong resident. She died
following an evening of bridge with her good friends. Be was a keen
competitor and enjoyed successes in many sports including bowling, curling
and golf. She held city records in bowling and won many golf tournaments.
She was a member of the Gorge Vale Golf Club for over 40 years, golfing her
last round at Ladies' Night in October, 2007. In the 1984 B.C. Summer Games,
Be and her 14 year-old granddaughter, Kristen, were identified as the first
grandmother/granddaughter participants. She shared fun times with a large
group of friends. They played golf, bridge, shopped, travelled and always
looked out for each other. This group of ladies taught us how to live life
to the fullest. Mom was a very positive and happy person. She considered
herself to be the matriarch of the family and we were more than happy to
accept that. Mom was very proud of her family and didn't hesitate to let us
know. She lived an independent life in the family home and maintained a
beautiful garden. We loved her. Nana will be particularly missed by her
grandchildren: Dan, Jason, Kristen, Ember, Karen, Kathryn, Gillian and
Derek. Nana took care of us when we needed it and spoiled us whether we
needed it or not. Nana was there for every Christmas, birthday, graduation
and wedding throughout our entire lives and we shall miss her. Be, driving
her 1967 Mustang, was a fixture in the community and she will be missed. Be
was predeceased by her husband, Lundy/Swede, in 1983. She will be remembered
by her brother Jim (Naomi), cousin C.J. and her sons, Rod (Donna) and Wayne
(Sandra) and daughter Tona. Be's legacy includes eight grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren. She leaves many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends in
British Columbia, Washington and California. In lieu of flowers please make
donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. and Yukon or the B.C.
Cancer Society. There will be no service at Be's request. 438429

SMITH, The Reverend Gilbert David October 14, 1913 January 16, 2008 Born in
Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Dearly beloved husband of Barbara and father
of David (Ethelwyn); cherished grandfather of Stephen, Brian and Sarah.
Predeceased by his parents, 2 sisters and brother, all of N. Ireland.
Educated at Foyle and Magee Colleges, Londonderry. He loved language and
completed an M.A. in English at Trinity College, Dublin followed by Theology
at New College, Edinburgh. As a young man his faith was strongly influenced
by T.S. Mooney. He served Belfast as a chaplain during the bombings of WW
II, later ministering at Trinity, Bangor, and Magheragall, where he enjoyed
an amazing rapport with young people. Gilbert was a keen sportsman
representing his schools in soccer, cricket and field hockey, and country in
field hockey. Later his sporting prowess helped Lisburn Cricket and
Lisnagarvey Hockey Clubs reach great heights. In 1953 he was urged to come
to Canada; his leadership helped found a new congregation, St. Giles
Presbyterian Church Peterborough, Ont. Here he met Barbara; they married in
1954. In Ontario he continued to play cricket and once scored a century
during a game at Upper Canada College. After serving congregations in
Brantford and Mt. Pleasant, the family went to New Zealand where he
ministered at Clevedon from 1965-1967. Back in Canada, Trinity Presbyterian
Victoria, welcomed the Smiths; Gilbert's years of Christian teaching,
counsel and friendship touched lives, inside and out of the church
community. He was on the Dallas House A.A. board for many years. He retired
from Trinity in 1981 but continued in service, especially loved by his
friends at the Chinese Presbyterian Church. At Beacon Hill Park he enjoyed
playing cricket and later umpiring. Monthly Cricket club luncheons featured
his graces. Golfing Mondays at Royal Colwood GC, he managed two hole-inones.
Gilbert was also an ardent flower grower, a member of the Chrysanthemum and
Dahlia Clubs. He leaves friends, young and old, who were influenced by his
integrated wit, intelligence, compassion and faith! A legacy to his
grandchildren is his faith, often expressed through great hymns, which he
continued to sing in his last days. It is with assurance and joy that his
family reaffirms his faith: I know whom I have believed and am persuaded
that He is able, to keep that which I've committed unto Him, against that
day!" & It is well, it is well, with my soul!" Special thanks to the staff
at San Pen ECU. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity
Presbyterian Church or to a charity of your choice. Funeral will be held at
