BROWN Olga (Nee Farynowski) July 18, 1933 January 13, 2008 It is with very
great sadness that I, Archie, announce the death of my beloved wife after
nearly 56 years of marriage. Olga left the work force upon marriage and
devoted her life to being a homemaker. After the children grew up she
recommenced work in a Law Office part time and later for the RCMP. We
retired to Gibsons in 1992 where Olga continued to enjoy her love of
cooking, travel and other interests. Olga is also survived by our three
children, Diane Simpson (Calgary), Robert Brown (Gibsons) and Trish Brown
(Vancouver), and by five grandchildren, Stephanie, Justin and Stacey Brown,
and Kimberly and Nicholas Simpson, four brothers, Joseph (Vancouver), Tony
(Edmonton), Wally (Los Angeles) and Edmund (Calgary) She was predeceased by
three sisters, Florence, Anne and Mary. Olga battled two types of cancer
since 2003 with operations, chemotherapy and radiation. Advised in January,
2007 that the cancer had spread and that further chemotherapy and radiation
would only prolong her life for a short period she decided to forego such
treatment and enjoy the quality of life as much as possible. Olga loved life
and was a cheerful, generous and wonderful person and will be missed by her
family, friends and all who knew her. At her request there will be no
service at this time. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to B.C.
Cancer Foundation in her memory for cancer research.

DRURY Allan Herbert (June 18, 1940 January 20, 2008) Few lived life as fully
as Allan Drury. Innovator, joker, adventurer, pioneer, businessman, spouse,
father, and a great friend to so many, Allan was all of these and more. Born
to Herb and Ida Drury in Barrie, Ontario, Allan was a high-school sports
star and an excellent student. He studied to become a geologist and worked
in the oil and gas industry in Calgary, Alberta. But a life-changing event
would lead Allan and his equally adventurous and talented spouse, Brenda
(Wedge), into the mountainous wilds of British Columbia's West Kootenay
region. In the late 1960s, Allan was one of the first skiers to venture into
the mountains with the iconic Hans Gmoser and his then ÃupstartÄ Canadian
Mountain Holidays. A life-long skier (with a great love for freestyle or, as
it was then known, hot-dogging), Allan's heli-skiing experience, coupled
with his kamikaze spirit, led him to ask, Why can't I do this? As
always, he knew he could. Before long, Brenda and Allan had moved to the
tiny logging community of Meadow Creek, two hours north of Nelson, B.C., to
start Selkirk Wilderness Skiing on Meadow Mountain in the Selkirk range, the
first snow cat skiing operation in the world. Since SWS first opened its
doors to skiers in 1975, Allan has influenced the lives of many and not just
skiers. His passion for the sport and his take-no-prisoners approach to the
slopes (ask any who skied with himÇ) had even the most reluctant skiers
exploring the wild and stunning terrain of the Selkirks. The same people
would come back year after year, in part for the amazing snow and the
beautiful terrain, but also to be anywhere close to Allan. He was, quite
simply, a magnet. Whether it was flying off a jump on Chuck Your Lunch„
(one of his favourite runs), yodelling through a powder field, or recounting
the day's events in the evening at the lodge, Allan's love for life in the
mountains was profound and infectious. One of his skiers described him thus:
He was a true gentleman, a man of honesty, courage, and clarity. You
probably know the Yiddish word that bestows the highest possible honour to a
man. The word is mensch. Allan was a mensch and I am privileged to
have known him. Another skier describes Allan as a man who lived his
dreams, but more importantly, invited countless others in. Today, Selkirk
Wilderness Skiing is known throughout the world as one of the finest
commercial backcountry operators in the snowsports industry. Its family
atmosphere, genuine commitment to staff, guests, and surrounding community;
respect for the environment, and high operational standards, are all
reflections of the man Allan Drury was. Whether he was paragliding above
Meadow Creek, windsurfing on Kootenay Lake, hitting golf balls on the back
nine (his field out back, mostly) or sharing time with his beloved daughters
Andrea and Rachel (both accomplished skiers) doing all of the things the
family loved, Allan made sure that every moment on this earth counted. Allan
had been experiencing the effects of cancer for two years, but few would
have guessed it. He approached those years, and his leaving of this life,
with his characteristic clarity of purpose, courage, optimism, and wicked
sense of humour. He did not want his death to cause any interruption of the
ski operation because, as he said the day before he died, Ãmy spirit will
be on Meadow, and I will want some company there.Ä When he left us, he was
at home in Meadow Creek with Brenda, Rachel, and Andrea, as well as other
family members and friends. In his life beyond, we wish him endless
ÃRolling Thunders,Ä another Meadow run he loved. Many helped Allan take
his final jump from this world, but his family wishes to give special thanks
to Dr. Phillip Malpasse, Dr. Martha Wilson, Cheryl Hicks R.N., and Rhonda
Addison R.N., for their amazing care and devotion to Allan. A private
mountaintop farewell will be held this weekend. A public celebration of
Allan's life will be held in Nelson in late April. Anyone wishing to
remember Allan in ways other than doing what he loved may make donations to
the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation Equipment Fund (
www.kootenaylakehospitalfoundation.com ).

resided until this November. While growing up Joe loved to play baseball for
the local town but learned to swing a golf club as well, once he settled in
Vancouver. He was a long standing member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch
177 and one of their avid crib players. Since November Joe and Florence
joined their family in Chilliwack, B.C. in order to spend more time with

FRIESEN DONNA M. January 25th, 1949 - January 23rd, 2008 It is with profound
sadness that we announce the passing of a life well-lived. With her typical
strong character, positive attitude and uncomplaining nature, Donna lost her
seven year battle with cancer. Her life was exemplified by her strong
Christian faith and a sincere desire and willingness to put others before
herself. As a school secretary the many ÃŽlittle peopleÃŽ that she nurtured
through their elementary school years often referred to her as their
ÃŽschool MomÃŽ. Donna loved sports and in her graduating year was declared
most outstanding female athlete at North Surrey Senior Secondary. During the
last 15 years Donna spent many hours on the tennis courts at Sunrise Racquet
Club in Palm Springs. Donna is survived by her husband Glen, of almost 39
years, daughters Kim and Lisa (Sean) and her beloved grandchildren Damien,
Jayden and Addison. She is also survived by her parents Vic and Marge and
sister Cathy (Mike). Her brother Gary predeceased her in September 2001.
Donna will be sorely missed by all who were touched by her exemplary life. A
memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 31 at 1:00 p.m. at Peace

HERRINGTON Diamond Grant (Bud), passed away suddenly on January 20th, 2008
at his home in North Vancouver at the age of 81. Bud was predeceased by his
2 day old son Chad, sister Harriette, mother Adelaide, and father Harry. He
will be lovingly remembered by his wife Joan, children Kirk (Shannon) and
Dawn (Rob), and six grandchildren Tyler, Travis, Quinn, Lana, Tanner and
Emily. He is also survived by cousin Diamond (Sue), Aunt Blanche, and
nephews Michael and Nathan. Bud was born in Estevan Saskatchewan on June
27th, 1926. At the tender age of 6 Bud won the 100-yard dash for his age
group in the Toronto and District Track and Field Championship, launching
his lifetime passion for sports. Bud's great speed made him a terrific
basketball and hockey player, two sports he played competitively for many
years. Bud also became involved in golf at a young age, spending many
weekends as a caddy at local golf courses. Although he never took a golf
lesson in his life, Bud became a skilled golfer who could consistently drive
over 250 yards and follow up with impressive chips and putts. Bud was proud
of his 6 Ãhole-in-onesÄ and consistent near-par scores at Ambleside Pitch
and Putt in West Vancouver, a course he especially loved in recent years.
Bud joined the RCAF in WWII as a tail gunner at the age of 17 and proudly
displayed ÃVeteranÄ license plates on his car. After returning from
service, he worked in a number of fields before taking a position with
Rothmans where he spent the remainder of his 29 years in professional life
until his retirement in 1986. During his years at Rothmans Bud and Joan and
their family were transferred many times within Canada, but when they
arrived in Vancouver they knew they were home. In the last decade of his
career Bud became very involved in a variety of events which he enjoyed
immensely, including the World Tennis Tour, RCMP Curling, Equestrian
Competitions, The Vancouver Fireworks Festival and a Celebrity Tennis
tournament. Bud enjoyed the companionship of his many friends at the
Terminal City Club where he was a member of the Birthday Club, with his
former business associates, and his wonderful good friends in the community.
In 1990 Bud and Joan spent 6 ? years at Rancho Monserate, in Fallbrook
California, where they made many new life-long friends before returning to
BC to be close to their children and grandchildren. While Bud clearly adored
his wife, he was a harmless flirt and was generous with his compliments. He
was on a first-name basis with most of the servers and cashiers at the
restaurants and shops he frequented, often presenting the ladies with a
small gift or a rose. Bud was very involved with his grandchildren,
frequently and boisterously -- attending their various sporting events to
cheer them on. Bud believed in giving back to the community and was generous
with his time, participating at an executive level in many charitable and
not-for-profit organizations including The Variety Club, Expo 86 Corporate
Sponsorship, and various strata councils. Next to the deep love and
affection he felt for his family and friends, Bud had a special fondness for
cheese, especially aged cheddar and blue. Whenever friends or family would
drop in for a visit, Bud would proudly offer up his best cheeses for his
guests to enjoy. Indeed, Bud would be insulted if his guests did not sample
the fine spread of cheeses on display! Bud was a rare man who judged no one
and who always took a deep interest in the lives and welfare of others. He
was a man of profound integrity, whose word was his bond. He was a man whom
everyone respected and was a wonderful role model for his children. Bud will
be remembered for his ever-present smile, cheerful manner and generous hugs.
He will be greatly missed by his family and close friends. A Celebration of
Life for Bud will be held at 2pm February 2nd at Highlands United Church in
Edgemont Village on the North Shore. In lieu of flowers, Bud's family asks
that you please consider making a donation to the Heart and Stroke

McAVITY (nee Oland), Adine Denise (Dids) of Vancouver, BC passed away
peacefully on Tuesday evening January 22, 2008 surrounded by and in the
company of her immediate and loving family. Born in 1920, she was the only
child of Captain John Eric Woodhouse Oland of Halifax, NS and Denise
Victoria Oland (nee Harris) of Victoria, BC. Mum grew up in many places
including Victoria and Halifax, attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart in
Vancouver, Dalhousie University in Halifax and married John M. McAvity of
Saint John, NB on December 29, 1941, several weeks before Dad went overseas.
While Dad was overseas in Italy and the low countries, Malcolm was born in
1942 in Montreal. Reunited in December 1945, Mum and Dad settled in
Rothesay, NB and welcomed to their family, Eric, born 1946, Frances, born
1948 and Catherine, born 1952. Relocating to Vancouver in 1952 from Rothesay
and Kitchener/Waterloo, Mum and Dad remained in their adopted west coast
home for the next 55 years building life long friendships and engaging in
their community as active and caring volunteers. Their passion as volunteers
was directed heavily towards the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society
(CARS) to which Mum remained devoted for many years. Predeceased by her
eldest son Malcolm in July 2001 and by her loving husband of 65 years in
July 2006, Mum remained a strong and faithful icon of family for all her
children: Malcolm (Patricia Gibson) of North Saanich, BC, Eric (Judith
Maxwell) of Canmore, Alberta, Frances of Vancouver, Catherine (John Kaye) of
North Saanich and her cherished granddaughter Martha, of Canmore, Alberta.

faithful friends as well as her caregivers: Rudi, Fatima, Helen, Tericita
and Maria. Mum remained a woman of strong faith, humour and love and through
the years was a wonderful source of inspiration, strength and comfort. Her
love of flowers and music resulted in wonderful contributions of time and
devotion to her church as a faithful and long serving member of the altar
guild and the choir. A funeral mass will be held to celebrate the life of
our mother on January 30, 2008 at Church of St. John the Apostle, 5457

Dr. Norman Lloyd Sanders Surrounded by his loving family, Norman Sanders
passed away at home on January 13, 2008. Norman was 83 years old and had a
very special and fulfilling life. He is survived by his loving wife Maureen,
brother Sandy, children Carol (Paul), Barry (Margo), Ken (Sharon), Penny
(Richard), Roni (Gary), Jonathan (Amelia), his grandchildren Jenny, Ari,
Sam, Jared, Ben, Mollie, and Ashley, as well as his nephews, nieces,
cousins, and many, many caring friends, all of whom cherish wonderful
memories of Norman. Funeral services were held at the Beth Israel Cemetery
on January 15, 2008. Norman was born in Southey Saskatchewan on April 27,
1924. He met his first wife Fruma when they were both 13 years old.
Separated from Fruma, while Norman went to the University of Toronto, the
relationship survived as their love was very deep and they married on
December 26th, 1945. Norman graduated from the University of Toronto Dental
School in 1945. In 1946, he and Fruma moved to Vancouver where Norman
quickly established a successful dental practice. They started a family, had
three children, and became an integral part of the Vancouver Jewish
Community. But tragedy struck when Fruma passed away suddenly in 1976. Still
a young man at 52, Norman eventually recovered from his tremendous grief. By
relying on his inner strength he evolved personally and recreated himself.
He continued his dedication to his work, family and lifelong friends. Many
new friendships developed as he expanded his horizons both personally and
professionally. He practiced dentistry for 54 years until his retirement in
2000. He set very high professional standards for himself and he developed
mutually warm and caring relationships with his patients who valued his
thorough and careful work. He continued to study dentistry and stayed up to
date throughout his long career. Norman met the 2nd love of his life,
Maureen, in 1986. They were married in 1988 and enjoyed 22 very happy and
fulfilling years together. Norman and Maureen shared a zest for life and
family, each bringing three children to the union. They loved one another
profoundly and took great pleasure in bringing their two families together
as one. After Norman's retirement they traveled the world for 7 exciting
years. Always adventurous, he loved to be active and played many sports. He
liked to start every day with an early morning swim. Norman was an unselfish
man of great integrity, family loyalty, humility, and personal charm. He was
extremely loving and caring to his family and his many friends for whom he
was always there. His passing leaves an enormous loss for everyone who knew
and cherished him. The family wishes to voice special thanks to all of his
excellent care-givers who helped to ensure that both he and the family were
supported as best possible through a most difficult time. According to his
wishes, the family requests that donations be directed to the Louis Brier
Home for the Aged and to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Nanaimo. John's favourite pastimes involved sports. He was an avid golfer
and soccer player; he also coached his sons' soccer teams for many years. As
well, he greatly enjoyed watching hockey games and going on camping trips
with his family. In addition, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge. John was
a devoted father and family man, always impressing upon his children the
importance of family. He will be greatly missed by all his family. The
family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all who cared for
John during his years in care: firstly, the exceptional staff at Berwick on
the Lake; secondly, the equally exceptional staff at Nanaimo Senior's
Village; and finally his thoughtful and caring doctor, Dr. P. Vreede. A
memorial service was held at St. John the Divine Anglican Church, 21299
River Road, Maple Ridge, BC, on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at 10:30 am,
followed by a graveside interment at Maple Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made, in his name, to the Heart and Stroke
Foundation.

WHITLEY Frances Lenore September 4, 1918 - January 20, 2008 Passed away
peacefully at the Richmond Hospital on January 20, 2008, surrounded by her
family, following a stroke December 6th, 2007. Her favourite music, by local
harpist, Helen Siemens, gave her peace and enjoyment during this difficult
period. Predeceased by her husband Gordon. A beloved mother to Brenda Delf
(Mike) and son, Blake (Angela) who will miss her greatly. She was adored and
respected by her grandchildren, Warren Delf (Rowena), Leah Groves (Dave),
Andrea Halseybrandt (Mike), and Mark, Carol, and David Whitley. Survived by
her loving sister, Eleanor (Jack) Winram. Much loved by her nieces,
Yvonne(Charlie) Purpora, Lex (Cynthia) Winram, and Alison (Tony) Purpora ,
Sharon (Al) Syverson, Gail Hendricks and Gordon (Darlene) Whitley Jr. Born
in Winnipeg, Frances was a spirited soul, whose love of painting shone
through at a very early age of 10. Her passion for painting, gave her years
of enjoyment right up to her last days. With other artists she enjoyed many
a weekend in the mountains, lakes and ocean retreats throughout B.C., with
fellow artists . The highlight of her painting career came when she flew to
southern France for 2 week art classes sponsored by Capilano College in 1997
and 2001. Fran received much pleasure from reading, especially historical
novels.. She always gave to the less fortunate: her motto was ÃŽI feel much
better when I give, than when I receiveÃŽ. Thus, she was an avid supporter
of many charities. She loved animals, great and small, (even spiders!), and
instilled the respect of all animals in her children /grandchildren. Her
favourite pets were her 2 beloved cats, Gaby and Gabby who gave her great
joy after Gordon passed on. Her passion for golf gave her many years of
enjoyment at Point Grey Golf Club. She took pride in organizing golf tours,
along with her husband, to various golf resorts in the USA . She was forever
grateful for the companionship of her girlfriends, especially the frequent
time spent with her loyal friend, Velma Lewis. As Velma stated: "Fran was
always a good sport, always up for anything.!!" We will forever miss her
our precious fun loving, humourous, generous , caring mother, grandmother,
and friend. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Richmond Hospital
Foundation or Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. A special thank you to the
staff on 3rd floor South, Richmond General, and especially to Dr. Mike
Myckatyn. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 1st, at 1:30
p.m. at Point Grey Golf Club, 3350 SW Marine Drive (604-266-7171).

WILLIAMS Sonia L. It is with great sadness that the friends of Sonia
Williams announce her passing on January 20, 2008. She was not alone when
her stoic struggle with scleroderma ended. Sonia was a vivacious, energetic,
and positive person, determined to try new things and explore new territory.
Born in Cheshire in 1934, and raised in Yorkshire, Sonia was the only child
of Frank and Isa Williams. There she participated in a variety of sports at
an early age. She trained as an X-ray technician in England. "On a lark" she
travelled by ship to Canada, and immediately found employment in a Montreal
hospital. Seeking a warmer climate, Sonia travelled across Canada, settling
in Vancouver in the 1950's, where she lived until her passing. Sonia
practiced as an X-ray technician at the Royal Columbian and the Vancouver
General Hospitals. While furthering her education at UBC (BA Honours in
History, MED in Adult Education), Sonia worked at BCIT, ending her career
there as the Head of the Health Administration Program. Among her wide
variety of interests were history, cooking, opera, murder mysteries, and
wine. Her passion was travel. Some of the highlights of a lifetime of
extensive travel were trips to India, Cambodia, Libya, Turkey, Tunisia, the
Middle East, Australia, and South Africa. She remembered the 40 degree C
temperature of Egypt with great fondness. Sonia had a talent for making and
keeping friends, and they mourn her passing in Canada, England, Australia,
Holland, and the USA. Sonia is predeceased by her parents, her aunt Marian,
her husband David Watkins, and her close friend Annemiek Kulsdom. A Requiem
Mass will be held for Sonia, led by The Rev. Henry Dickinson, in Blackburn,
England. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 11:00
a.m. at St. Peter and St. Paul Traditional Anglican Church, 1649 Kitchener
Street, Vancouver, BC.
