FLETCHER, Dr. H. F. (Bob) Peacefully in Victoria, BC on 27 January, 2008.
Born 15 February, 1923, Bob was the beloved husband of Dorothy (nee Elvidge)
for 58 years; loving father of Eric (Katharine), Steven (Martine), Janet
(Ron) Citynski, Terry (Monique), Greg (Michelle), and Laurie (George)
Schell. He will also be missed by his 14 grandchildren and 2
great-grandchildren. A life-long environmentalist and provocative futurist
thinker, Bob always challenged family and everyone he knew to think
creatively and compassionately outside the box, always encouraging everyone
to stretch their minds. Bob was born in Summerland and grew up in Victoria.
After graduation from UBC, he worked at the Agassiz Agricultural Research
Station during the 1950s. In 1960, he took his family for a 2-year break to
obtain his PhD in Agronomy at the University of Illinois. In the mid-60s,
the family moved to Ottawa, where Bob worked in water resources and then the
new Department of Environment. When he retired, he remained very active,
building an environmentally-friendly log home near Ottawa and taking on
various international consulting projects, including a memorable 3-year
contract in India. He was also very involved with a number of professional
associations, and in particular, the Canadian Association for the Club of
Rome for more than 20 years. Bob returned to Victoria with Dorothy in 2000,
where they particularly enjoyed visits with their grandchildren to debate
political and environmental issues of the day. We will miss him, yet his
memory, support, and "Hey, let's do it" attitude will continue to guide us.
