ASH, Nancy February 14, 1955 March 20, 2008 Mother, Daughter, Sister,
Friend, Sports Fan Nancy was born in Victoria, B.C. to Teresa and John Ash.
She was predeceased by her father John, brother John and sister Carmen. She
will be lovingly remembered by her "Own Sweet Angel" daughter Hilary, mother
Teresa, sisters Lisa and Kristine, brothers Michael, Tony and Peter, Auntie
Mila and all their families. Nancy worked at the Medical Plan of B.C. for 32
years establishing many close friendships who became an extended family.
Nancy was independent in thought and action, always true to herself, family
and friends. The day she left us, she went peacefully surrounded by family
and friends. She was loved by many and Nancy loved right back. A service
will be held on Saturday, March 29, 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary
Church at 798 Goldstream Avenue. 454195

BRYANT, M. Doreen October 14, 1926 March 23, 2008 Born in Victoria, B.C.
growing up in James Bay. Passed away in the early hours on Easter following
an extended period of declining health. Beloved wife of Joseph Bryant.
Loving mother to son Murray (Muzz) and daughter Terry. Also survived and
loved by her two grandsons Jason and Kevin, son-in-law Mal Roberts,
Michelle, brother Gordon Ball, sisters-in-law Jeanette Bryant, Ruth Ball and
brother-in-law Cork Bryant, also 29 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased
by her mother Ethel, father Charles Ball, brothers Ed, Stan and Ernie,
sisters Florence and Shirley. Doreen will be remembered for her gentle sense
of humour and love for her family and friends. Leaving Vic High School at
age of 14 she worked at Northwestern Creamery where she met her husband to
be, Joe. She also worked for Hudson Bay grocery department, Adams Low Cost
and Woodward's grocery department. She was a very good 5 pin bowler, shuffle
board player, and card player. Doreen and Joe celebrated their 61st
Anniversary on 20th August. Deepest gratitude is extended to her caregivers
at Oak Bay Lodge since November 2007. Thanks also to Dr. Leah Norgove for
everything she did for Doreen. No funeral by her request. Private Cremation.

ELLETT, Jack Meredyth May 2, 1919 March 16, 2008 Jack was born in Toronto,
Ontario. He was the youngest child of Mary Louise and John Henry Ellett. He
was predeceased by baby sister, Mary (1915), sister Bertha Barker and sister
Kathleen (Kitty) Louise Greenslade (1988). The family moved to 437 Monterey
Ave., Victoria in 1919. Jack and Kitty enjoyed a childhood on the beaches at
Willows, Cadboro Bay and Shoal Bay. They climbed Gonzales Hill to watch for
ships. Jack loved music and won piano festival awards. Jack married the
beautiful Doris May Faulkner May 2, 1942. Their 65th wedding anniversary was
quietly celebrated in 2007. Jack first worked at the Empress Hotel. He later
became a mechanic and owned several garages around Victoria; first the
Texaco at Craigflower and Tillicum, then Douglas BA at Douglas and Herald
St. and a third in Fairfield. Predeceased by partner Alex Speller. Jack and
Doris loved to spend weekends and holidays traveling, camping and above all
fishing often with friends Art and Elaine Caton. Their property in Sooke
with its small fishing cabin was well used. In the early 1980s they decided
to build a small home on this much loved property and make it home, where
they lived until early 2007. Left to mourn his loss is his wife, Doris;
niece Kathleen (Ed York), great niece Norah (Rob Thornton) and great great
niece and nephew Shelby and Stephen; great nephew James (Georgina York) and
great great nephew; niece Bruce and Rebecca, niece Margaret Moore, great
nephew Patrick Moore, great niece Susan (Dale Leicht) and great great niece
and nephew Kasia and Aidan; great niece Christina and great nephew Jordan,
nephew Frank Barker, nephew Fred (Clare) Faulkner and great niece Stacy
(Josh McCulloch), great nephew Matthew, and great niece Melissa; and by
family friends Jean Oakman, May, Hugh and Shirley Hollingworth. Visitation
for family and friends will be held at First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 4725
Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC on Friday, March 28, 2008 from 12:00 p.m. 2:00
p.m. followed by the funeral service in the Chapel at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of

FAIR, James David (Jim) It is with great sadness and loving memories that
Brian (Nancy) of Kelowna and Gloria of Honolulu, son and daughter, wish to
announce the passing of their beloved father, James David Fair at the age of
88. He leaves behind two wonderful grandchildren, Kirsten and Bradley, son
and daughter of Brian and Nancy. Jim, born in Abbey, Saskatchewan in 1919,
was predeceased by his brother, Robert Fair and his mother and father,
Margaret and David. He was previously married to Betty Jean, who remained a
very caring and devoted friend. Jim was a member of the Oddfellows Lodge for
many years, served in the Air Force during World War II and was a longtime
resident of Victoria, where he took great pride in his work as a carpenter.
He was an avid sports fan who played hard and loved to coach. Jim will
always be remembered and honored as a kind and caring man by all who knew
him. Special thanks to the staff at John Alfred Manor and James Bay Lodge
for their compassionate care, and to our Mom who was always there for us. A
Celebration of Jim's Life will be held at MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL,
Johnson & Vancouver Streets, on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 11:00 am. In

GORDON, Eileen Ann Born November 8, 1916 in Cardiff, Wales, passed away
peacefully on March 21, 2008 at Mount St. Mary Hospital, Victoria, BC. She
will be lovingly remembered by her son Paul, his wife Norma, her
granddaughter Dana (Paul), 3 greatgrandchildren, Courtney, Dakota and Colby

GREENING, George Charles May 20, 1920 March 21, 2008 George was born in
Monikie, Scotland, to William Arthur and Emma (Faupel) Greening, the second
youngest of their twelve children. He came to Canada from England in 1924
with his parents and nine of his eleven brothers and sisters. The family
settled on a farm south of Gladstone, Manitoba. George served with the
Canadian Army in WW II from 1939 1945 in North Africa, Italy and England. He
worked for many years at Alcan in Kitimat, BC. George loved the outdoors,
the ocean, and the wildlife; he enjoyed fishing, boating, and woodworking.
George loved all animals, especially his own dogs. He enjoyed being with
people, and was known for his kind generous nature and wonderful sense of
humour. George died peacefully in his sleep, early Friday morning, at
Saanich Peninsula Hospital after a lengthy illness. Sincere appreciation
goes out to Dr. D. Jovic along with the nurses and staff at SPH for their
compassionate care of George. He is predeceased by his parents, his first
wife Elsie, and ten of his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his
loving wife Norah (Murray), son Michael of Kitimat, BC and sister Clara
Greening Black of Stonewall, Manitoba, as well as many nieces and nephews. A
graveside service will be held on Friday, March 28, 2008, at 1:30 PM, at
Royal Oak Burial Park, 4673 Falaise Drive, with a reception immediately

GROVE, Marion Isobel (nee Kirk) May 10, 1926 March 14, 2008 Marion passed
away peacfully at her home in Victoria, BC. Born in Sudbury, Ontario she
spent her childhood in the Sudbury area, and summers at her grandparents
farm in Glanworth, Ontario. As a teen she enjoyed swimming, canoeing,
fishing on Lake Wanapitei, with sister Diana, dear friend Helen Woodside
(Muir), as well as many others. Marion trained as a nurse at Ontario Womans
College Hospital in Toronto. Upon graduation she moved with friends to take
up a nursing position at the new hospital in Trail, BC. There she made life
long friends, and met her future husband Ralph Grove. They were married in
1951, settled down and started a family. They later moved to Sooke, BC where
Marion lived for the next 40 years. During her many years in Sooke, Marion
was involved with Meals on Wheels, Ladies Auxillary at Holy Trinity Anglican
Church, Salvation Army, and Stage West. She enjoyed the Sooke Philharmonic
Orchestra, the Sooke Fine Arts Show, and particularly the Musical Soirees at
Kathy Swifts. She loved music and enjoyed playing the piano. She also
enjoyed Golf, Tai Chi, and walks on Whiffen Spit. Marion was an early
proponent and practitioner of meditation, and yoga. She was predeceased by
her husband Ralph in 1979. Marion will be fondly remembered by her children:
Peter (Debra), William, Jim (Marcela), Nancy; grandchildren: Heather
(Andrew), Noah, Gabriel, Louis, Marcelita, Camila; and 5 greatgrandchildren;
sister: Diana; nephew, nieces, and their families. A Memorial service will
be held at Sands Funeral Chapel, 317 Goldstream, Colwood, BC on Saturday,
March 29th 2008 at 11:00 A.M. reception to follow. Flowers gratefully

HARLAN, Norman Roy Norm passed away peacefully at the Lodge at Broadmead on
March 21, 2008. He will be lovingly remembered by Jennie, his wife of over
60 years; son Robin (Wendy); daughter Wendy (Jim) Boyd; grandchildren Shelby
and Thomas Harlan and Meghan Boyd; brother-in-law Ted (Marjorie) Robbins and
many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his sister Alma Burton in June 2006
and sister-in-law Irene Kendrew in February 2008. Norm was born on April 1,
1923 in Vancouver, BC. He grew up in Port Hardy and on Quadra Island. In
1939 he joined the Merchant Navy. After the war Norm was employed by
Seaboard Advertising and Neon Products for over 28 years, and then the BC
Government Ministry of Health until his retirement in 1988. He was a member
of the Royal Canadian Legion, Trafalgar/Pro Patria Branch No. 292; Columbia
Lodge No. 2, I.O.O.F.; and Lake Hill Lawn Bowling. We would like to thank
extended family, friends and neighbors for the support received over the
years. Also our special thanks to Dr. David Madill, and the doctors, nurses
and health care workers on Westcoast Lodge at Broadmead. A Memorial service

HENDRA, Sidney Dennis Denny" February 14th, 1918 March 18th, 2008 It is with
great sadness that the family announces Denny's passing on Tuesday, March
18th, 2008 in Victoria, BC. Predeceased by his wife Denise in 2002. Lovingly
remembered and missed by his daughter Bonnie; sons Sid (Lisa), Mel (Jeanie)
and Todd (Diana); as well as grandchildren Tannis, Michael (Karolyn), Tawni,
Wade, Shaun, Kristina, Steven and Tyson; and great-grandchildren Alex,
Christopher and Anna. Survived by brothers Don and Roy (Addy). Born in
Sussex, England, Denny served in the RCN in W.W.II and then moved to
Courtenay and eventually settled with his family in Victoria. He resumed a
renowned cricket career that began in Alberta as a youth and he continued as
a top bowler and batter for the Albion Cricket Club in Victoria. He was a
loyal and dedicated member of the Gyro Club of Victoria for 40 years. He
worked as a contract manager for Farmer Construction for many years until
his retirement. Not ready to retire, he found himself working side by side
with his son Todd in Hendra Moving & Storage. He was an active member of the
Royal Colwood Golf Club for 50 years, within this time he was an executive
member, club captain and recently honoured as a life member. The golf course
was his home away from home. He will be missed by his many dear friends and
remembered for his humor, quick wit and sense of fair play. A celebration of
Denny's life will be held on Thursday, March 27th at 1:00 pm at the Royal
Colwood Golf Club, 629 Goldstream Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations to the

HENSON, Don March 10, 1939 March 22, 2008 It is with great sorrow and loving
memory that we announce the passing of Don. Survived by son, Don; daughter,
Debbie; ex-wife and friend, Linda; mother, Irene; brother, Ron and many
cousins, nieces and nephews. Don was born and raised in Victoria. He will
always be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humour and his kindness. In
his younger days, he was an avid fisherman, hunter and loved gardening. Don
was in the construction business most of his life where he met many great
friends who always had time for a beer at the local watering hole. For many
of those years he worked with good friend and cousin, Bill, who remained a
large part of his life. Dad, you will always be in our hearts. A grave-side
service will be held 2:30pm Friday, March 28, 2008 at Hatley Memorial

KULAI, Madeleine "Gussie" (nee McNeil) Jan. 5, 1913 Mar. 15, 2008 Born in
Camp 4, Headquarters, BC to John and Flora McNeil. Predeceased by her
husband George in 1977, her loving sister Sarah Verchere, and her brothers
Bill McNeil and John McNeil. She is survived by her son Ken and her nephews
and nieces. In her early years, Madeleine worked at the Wigwam Cafe and Ryan
Groceries in Ladysmith. When she moved to Victoria she worked as a clerk at
David Spencer's and Eaton's Department Stores. She was an avid gardener,
member of the Roman Catholic Church and a life long walker. Special thanks
to Dr. Dan Buie, Dr. John Kelly and the staff and nurses at Glenwarren Lodge
for their loving care and support. A memorial service will be held at First
Memorial Funeral Services, 1155 Fort Street, Victoria, BC on Saturday, March

LAING, Dorothy Jean (formerly Forsythe) Dorothy passed away peacefully in
Victoria on March 24, 2008 in her 93rd year. She was born in Winnipeg,
Manitoba and was predeceased by her first husband Larry in 1988, her son
Cameron in 1989 and her second husband Leslie. She will be lovingly
remembered by her 3 sons, Dean, Greg, Chris and their families and her

LAKE, Barry Joseph Born October 7th, 1951 passed away peacefully at home on
March 21, 2008. Loving husband of Judi and dear father of Kyle (Ashley),
Casey and JD. Also survived by sister Donna (Tom), nieces and nephews Ken,
Anne and David, and fatherin-law George Pal. Barry had a passion for his
family and friends, Harleys, racing and Skor bar blizzards. A special thank

McCORMACK, John Graham Mac" Born September 8, 1913 in Sydney, Nova Scotia;
he passed away peacefully March 23, 2008. Predeceased by his wife, Mary
Patricia, brothers Edward, Hugh and sister Mary. He is lovingly remembered
by his eight children, ten grandchildren, a great-grandchild and many
relatives and friends. Mac's greatest joy and the focus of his life was his
large family and extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and their
children. His warmth and hospitality, intelligence and compassion left a
lasting impression on all. After a 28 year career in the Air Force,
including service overseas during WWII, Mac retired in 1965, as a Wing
Commander. He took up a second career teaching business skills in Aylmer,
Ontario, retiring to Victoria in 1969. A viewing will take place on
Wednesday, March 26, from 2pm to 5pm at First Memorial Funeral Services,
1155 Fort Street, Victoria, with a reception to follow. The funeral service
will take place at St. Jean Baptiste, 307 Richmond Ave., Victoria on
Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to

McQUADE, Gwendoline Anna Belle September 19, 1928 March 20, 2008 It is with
great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom, Gwendoline McQuade.
Born in Edmonton in 1928 to James and Anna McQuade, Mom was predeceased by
her husband Neil and 6 brothers and sisters, all of Edmonton. Mom was deeply
loved by her four children and their spouses: Ken Kapty, Ross Kapty (Wendy),
Bonny Bramham (John), and Kelly Hart (Cameron). She was proud of and took
great joy in her six grandchildren: Kristen, Connor, Tyresa, James, Spencer
and Jasper. Mom spent the first half of her life in Edmonton where she
married and raised her family. Following the death of our Dad, Mom bravely
relocated to Maple Ridge before settling in Victoria four years ago. A
spunky and active person, Mom enjoyed travelling, swimming, her seniors crib
club, cooking and leisurely tea breaks with her family. Wherever her travels
took her, Mom was moved by and appreciated the beauty of nature. Two years
ago, she was lovingly embraced by Trinity Presbyterian Church and developed
many close and enduring relationships there. She spoke of you all many times
throughout the course of her illness and we are grateful for your love for
her. A memorial service and celebration of Gwen's life will be held at 11:00
am Thursday, March 27th at Trinity Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers

PORTTILA, Margaret Louise (McNeil) Sept. 26, 1926 March 06, 2008 Margaret
passed away peacefully at home in the arms of her family, she will be sadly
missed. Margaret is survived by her son John McNeil and wife Adele,
granddaughters Laura McNeil and Tanice (McNeil) Talbot and husband James,
great grandson Kairo Talbot (known by Nana as her Sonny boy), sisters Marg
Ryan and Teddy Walker, brothers Roy McNeil, Richard McNeil and Alex McNeil.
Margaret was predeceased by her son Timothy Porttila and loving husband
Tauno Porttila, brothers John (Jay) McNeil and Ranny McNeil. If you're away

PULLEN, Ian Passed away peacefully at home in Victoria with his family at
his side March 25, 2008. He was born in Vancouver July 14, 1948. He is
survived by his loving wife of 14 years Sandy Pullen; daughters Sage
McIntosh (Edward) and Jennifer Pullen; son Scott Pullen; grandchildren Emma,
Daniel and Logan and extended family. Ian spent almost 40 years in the
insurance business working for Crown and Harbord before building his own
successful firm Pullen Insurance Agencies from the ground up. He was proud
to call Victoria home with a special fondness for Harling Point. Ian also
enjoyed giving back to the community by volunteering in many local
organizations. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather
who loved his family more than anything else. A private family memorial will

SPARKS, Jack Frederick Passed away in Victoria on March 21, 2008. He was
born in Oakland, California on June 19, 1928. Predeceased by his brother,
Charles in the 1930's. Survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Jeannette;
daughters, Evelyn (Bill Letourneau) and Katherine Engley; son, Bill (Theresa
Bowman); grandchildren, Robert, Stewart, Kristen, Douglas, Sarah, Giselle
and Hayden. Jack worked in the dairy industry for 45 years, mostly in
Victoria. Before he was married and for awhile afterward, he spent much of
his time fishing with his parents. He was an active church member and
volunteer at St. Peter's Anglican Church. Jeannette and Jack spent many
holidays near Tofino, BC. They also celebrated their 50th anniversary at
Greendale Riverside Cabins, Cowichan Village, BC. A Memorial Service will be
held at St. Peter's Anglican Church, 3939 St. Peter's Road, Victoria, BC on
Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 2:00 pm with a reception to follow in the

STUBBS (EDWARDS), Pamela Mary Passed away at her home in Victoria on March
18th, 2008 at the age of 75. She is predeceased by her first husband Denis
Edwards and her second husband David Stubbs and is survived by her family,
sons Geoff, Rod (Cathy), Cliff (Irene) and granddaughter Melina. Pam was

THOMSON, Dave True to his character, after a long and courageous battle with
emphysema, Dave passed away March 18, 2008. Born on November 7, 1939 in
Victoria, Dave comes from one of the first pioneer families on the Saanich
Peninsula and was very proud of his Brentwood Bay roots. He started his
career as a land surveyor, working with crews throughout the province and
moved onto his first love, the paving business, where he owned and operated
Saanich Paving. He proceeded to work for OK Paving as their Superintendent
for several years. Dave ended up in the land development business and was
instrumental in the development of the Keating Industrial Park, Butler
Crescent and numerous subdivisions in the Brentwood and Keating areas. One
of his proudest accomplishments was the restoration of the Thomson family
farmhouse in Brentwood Bay, later dedicated as one of the first heritage
homes in Central Saanich. He was a founding member of the Brentwood Bay
Rotary Club and took pride in many of the projects they completed in the
community. These included the Brentwood walkway, boat launch and beach
access. Dave was a well-respected businessman, known for his honesty,
integrity, and commitment to getting the job done right. Dave will be
lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend of 44 years, Pat; daughter
Leigh Glancie (Dave); son Andy (Debbie); daughter Rae; his pride and joy,
his 4 grandchildren, Morgan, James, Madelaine and Sarah; mother Mary
Thomson; sisters Carol Vickers, Judy Primrose and their families; and
lastly, his most faithful companion, Max. The family wishes to thank CSVFD
First Responders and especially Rob Nelson for their fast and professional
services. Also, the Trauma Unit at Saanich Peninsula Hospital, ICU at
Jubilee Hospital, Dr. Porayko and the nurses who were all so compassionate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Lung Association. A
celebration of Dave's life will be held on Friday, March 28, 2008 at 2:00 pm
at the Brentwood Community Hall on Wallace Drive. I shall be telling this
with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence Two roads diverged in a wood and I
took the one less traveled by and that has made all the difference. 454152

Van HERWAARDEN, Antony November 12, 1923 March 24, 2008 Born in Urecht,
Holland and raised in Deventer, Holland, Tony emigrated in 1954 to Toronto,
ON where he met his wife Maria and they married in 1956. He went to Ryerson
University where he obtained a degree in engineering and metallurgy. They
moved to Youbou in 1966 where Tony worked until he retired in 1982.
Predeceased by his loving wife Maria in 2005. He is survived by sons Tony
Jr. (Elizabeth), Edwin (Susanne), and Henrich (Yvonne); granddaughters
Rylie, O'ressa, Lotta, Malou, and Floor; grandson David; and
great-granddaughter A'Lexy. There will be no service. Donations may be made
