BARNES Frank Frank was born in Vancouver on 10 February, 1918 and spent his
youth in Burnaby where he was "the smartest student to graduate from Burnaby
South" according to his principal. Intrigued by electronics from the late
1920's, he became a radio (and later TV) repairman, a builder of hi fi
systems, and computer programmer. He took a computing course at UBC in the
early 1960's when the total number of computers in the city was around 1.
These were avocations, as was his trumpet playing during the 30's and 40's.
His main career was in accounting, first at Fraser Mills (later Crown
Zellerbach), then as comptroller at BC Biomedical under Dr. Cam Coady.
Printing was a second job: we kids went to sleep to the sound of presses
churning and hissing in the basement. Later years featured travel with his
loving wife Marcia, and evenings with friends and g & t's. Predeceased by
his wife Marcia, to whom he was lovingly devoted; survived by his children
Paul (Martha), Robert (Cathy), Mary (Boog), and Michael (Carol), his
sister-in-law Jean, and 10 grandchildren. The family thanks his loyal
friends who visited to the end. An informal celebration of Frank's life will
be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m., Saturday, 3 May at the Executive Inn, 405 North
Road, Coquitlam. Guests are welcome to reminisce.

that Doreen Bell, born February 24, 1917 in Minitonas, Manitoba, passed away
suddenly at home in Canterbury Court, Vernon, B.C. on April 15, 2008 at the
age of 91 years or as she would say "in my 92nd year". Doreen lived in
Victoria and Tahsis, B.C. before moving to Vancouver in 1956 where she was a
long time resident until moving to Vernon, in June 2004, to be near her
daughter, Pat, when her health deteriorated and she needed more assistance.

last twenty-one years of her working years she spent at the Workers'
Compensation Board in Vancouver. Doreen is survived by her loving daughters:
Pat (David) Silversides of Vernon, Joan Robertson of Vancouver and her
step-daughter, Joan Firkins (Donna) of Victoria; granddaughters: Linda
Hemrich (Rick Davidson) of Port Coquitlam, Cathy Silversides (Blair
Polischuk) of Courtney and Karen (Wade) Christie of Kelowna; four
great-grandchildren: Amanda, Jessica, Max and Jay. She was predeceased by
her husbands: Ted Bell, Art Wrightman and David Rosenberry; three sisters:
Mabel, Winnie and Alice; grandson-in-law, Sean Hemrich and her faithful
canine companion, Dukey. We wish to thank the staff and residents at
Canterbury Court for their friendship and kindness to Doreen even if she
complained that she didn't get roast beef and Yorkshire pudding every night
as she wanted. Many thanks to Dr. Tim Gilhooly of Vernon for his care.
Doreen was a great lady, sharp as a tack to the end and will be missed very
much. A private family service will take place at a later date. Those
wishing to do so may make a memorial donation in Doreen's memory to The
Salvation Army or the Children's Hospital in Vancouver. Cremation

CARSON Frank S.November 11, 1928 - April 14, 2008 Frank S. Carson died
peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Frank is survived by his loving
wife Mary and his children Frank (Primrose), Donald (Connie), Ruth
(Richard), Janet (David), James (Bernadette) and Leonard (Valerie). Frank
was predeceased by his devoted son Dennis (Jerri) and leaves 20
grandchildren who adored and will greatly miss him. As a young man Frank
worked as a farmer, logger and bulldozer operator in Northern Alberta. There
he met and married Mary, his loving, devoted and ever-present life
companion. During 1951, Frank and Mary moved to Vancouver where Frank
secured employment with Ford Motor Co., a relationship which would continue
for 57 years. At this time he and Mary started their family. In 1961 Frank
moved his family to Victoria and with a partner started Suburban Motors. As
a result of much hard work, the business thrived enabling Frank and Mary to
pursue other business interests, particularly commercial real estate
development. Frank loved his community which he felt had been so very good
to him and his family. His record of volunteerism was exhaustive. Frank's
desire to give back to his community eventually landed him on Victoria City
Council. His approach was that of a consensus builder, not a self-promoter,
and eventually culminated with the Victoria Conference Centre, of which he
was very proud. As a provincial director of B.C. Transit, Frank helped with
the creation of Vancouver SkyTrain. For 9 years, Frank served as a director
of the Greater Victoria Hospital Society at the time when the hospital was
built at Helmcken Road. Frank's interests were varied. From boating to golf
to developing a commercial orchard in the Okanagan. But Frank derived his
greatest pleasure from his family. His love and support were unequivocal.
Frank's measure of success was the well-being of Mary and the rest of his
family. Funeral service to be held on Monday, April 21st, 2008 at 1:30 p.m.
at Christ Church Cathedral, 912 Vancouver Street, Victoria, British Columbia
(Quadra at Rockland). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart
& Stroke Foundation of B.C.

CHURCH Harold Peter Hilborne Peter's earthly journey came to an end five
days after his 82nd birthday. Peter was born in Sao Paulo, Brasil, to Harold
F. H. Church and Hilda H. (nee Owers). He was predeceased by his parents and
brother Ian E. H. Peter, a graduate of the New York School of Interior
Design, dedicated his life to raising interior design standards. He was
proud that the only interiors he hadn't worked on were those of a rail coach
and a plane. Peter lived and worked in Brasil, England, New York, and
Ontario before settling in Vancouver. His clients, tradespeople, and friends
all became intertwined to become an extended family. Peter was a frequent
traveler to many countries and enjoyed learning about different cultures and
languages. He also had an appetite for food from all corners of the world.
He was passionate about art, books, movies, music, and theatre. He held very
strong views on a wide range of subjects - and was never shy about sharing
these views. Peter's journey had recently become quite difficult as he
bravely faced a series of illnesses. His courageous struggle was assisted by
too many people to mention individually. Instead, we wish to thank the good
people at Vancouver General Hospital (the ER, Medical Assessment Unit, Ward
11A (ACE), and Palliative services), the Pacific Spirit Community Health
Centre (Home Hospice Program), and the BC Ambulance Service for providing
outstanding care in difficult circumstances. Peter will be remembered at a
memorial service to be held at St. Mary's Kerrisdale, 2490 West 37th Avenue,
Vancouver, at 2 pm on Friday, May 2. A Celebration of his life and work will
immediately follow the memorial service. Please contact 604-267-6334 or
email < > for additional information. In lieu of
flowers, people are asked to take a friend for lunch, in memory of Peter. We
have lost a true gentleman.

DYKE Eric "Sydney" Latham May 31, 1916 - April 12, 2008, passed away with
family at his side, aided in fighting pneumonia and a stroke by the
wonderful staff at Abbotsford MSA Hospital. Sydney is survived by his wife
Lee, sons Robin (Marline), Larry and Terry, grandsons Rob and Jay, and
brother Chris. After a rustic upbringing influenced by his father's work as
a civil engineer in early 20th Century southern Alberta, Sidney prepared for
a career in commercial art by attending Calgary Institute of Technology and
Art. War service as navigator on North Atlantic convoy patrol aircraft
intervened. Post-war, he soon rose to direct graphic art departments for
firms in Toronto and Vancouver. This experience gave Sidney the background
to establish the first commercial art programme available in British
Columbia at Douglas College. All along, Sid painted watercolours as a hobby
and exhibited at commercial galleries in B.C., Alberta and Washington State.
His other passion was family history and he has left behind an 8 volume set
of "Footprints" that dates back to the 1700's. Sid gave himself over
completely to companionship with Lee during the later years of their 68
years of marriage. A dedicated husband, he will also be remembered as a
father who sought to encourage his sons in their own aspirations rather than
direct their lives. A celebration of Sid's life will be held on Saturday,

FITZWATER Muriel Cynthia (nee Bing) July 20, 1922 - April 9, 2008 Cynthia
was born in Regina, the only daughter of Gerrard Andrew Bing and Florence
Gladys Pearce. Predeceased by her dear brother Roy, she leaves behind her
beloved brother Patrick of Comox, cousins Joan of Los Angeles and Philip of
Burnaby, nephew Gerrard (Gail) of Port Moody, niece Leslie (Pat) of Gibsons,
three great nieces and nephew and six great great nieces and nephews as well
as many very good friends in Canada, Britain, South Africa and New Zealand,
her home away from home. She graduated from the Vancouver General Hospital
School of Nursing in 1946 and worked there until 1952, when she and a friend
travelled by freighter from the port of Vancouver south through the Panama
Canal eventually landing in Cardiff a month after departure. They worked and
travelled through Britain and Europe for the next year, and she loved every
minute - England's Lake District was a favourite. She was in Britain during
the excitement of the coronation, and was invited to the Queen's garden
party at Buckingham Palace. After returning to Canada she again worked at
V.G.H. as a head nurse in the psychiatric unit until 1958 when she had the
opportunity to return to England to study in London for a year and, of
course, travel. Soon after her return she moved to Victoria and worked at
Royal Jubilee Hospital as an energetic and highly respected head nurse in
the neurosurgical unit until she retired in 1978 to start a new career in
gardening. Cynthia was an animal lover, avid gardener, gourmet cook and a
woman of conviction with strong opinions which she willingly shared. She
spent many happy hours walking her dogs on Mount Tolmie or on the beach
where she shared those walks with her dog walking friends. Cynthia liked
fine music, liked to correspond with friends all over the world, was a
talented artist, enjoyed bird watching, and was especially fascinated by the
colourful and exotic birds of New Zealand. Whether we called her Cynthia,
Auntie Cynthia, Bing or Cannan, we all loved her and will miss her very
much. Our sincere gratitude to Dr. Ken Smith and the dedicated nurses and
support staff at Victoria General who treated her with the dignity and
respect that she deserved. A celebration of her life will be held in
Victoria on May 10th from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at 3746 Waring Place. As Cynthia
supported many worthy causes including animal rescue organizations, if you
wish, please make a donation in her name to the S.P.C.A. or a similar
charity of your choice.

HOUSTON Archibald Ritchie December 25, 1921 - April 15, 2008 "Automatic
Arch", husband, father, grandfather, loyal friend, businessman,
entrepreneur, golfer and character of West Vancouver passed away suddenly on
Tuesday April 15, 2008 at the age of 86, gone to join his beloved Marion
after just a short time apart. Born in Toronto, the third of 4 boisterous
brothers Arch joined the family business, Textile Products, as a young man,
learning the textile trade from the ground up. At the same time he lived
life to the fullest, spending his free time on the golf course, and the
billiard establishments during the day and dazzling the ladies at the Silver
Slipper at night. One of those ladies was Marion, who found her life's love
in this handsome young man and their marriage thrived for 59 years until her
passing in 2006. In 1957 Archie and Marion and their 2 young daughters
Glenda and Jennifer packed up all their belongings to move west to Vancouver
and open up the Western Branch office of Textile Products. In 1966, with the
blessing of his family, Archie incorporated his own company Tex-Pro Western
Limited serving the Healthcare and Hospitality linen industry. With a
combination of hard work, skill and personality Archie prospered and the
Company remains vibrant to this day. Archie and family resided in West
Vancouver for over 50 years forming many lasting friendships. "Automatic
Arch" was an enthusiastic golfer starting in Toronto where he was a member
and former club champion at Lambton Golf Club and in West Vancouver where he
was a well known member of Capilano Golf and Country Club. Archie's love of
golf led to his involvement with BCGA working hard in support of Junior Golf
in B.C. Archie was also a charter member of Hollyburn Country Club. Survived
by daughters, Glenda Kemp (Doug) of North Vancouver and Jennifer Houston
(David) of Montreal, granddaughter Stephanie Kemp of Vancouver, brother,

RALSTON Kathleen Doris (nee Gilchrist) Our dear, special Mom passed away at
the age of 90 on April 15, 2008. Resided at Gibsons, B.C., formerly of
Roberts Creek and North Vancouver. Kae was born in Regina on January 17,
1918 and raised in Winnipeg, coming to Vancouver with her family at the age
of 18. She was married to our Dad (her beloved Robert (Bob)) for almost 51
years and the two of them were virtually inseparable until his death in
October, 1992. Mom was also predeceased by her much-loved sisters and
brothers-in-law, twin sister Irene and her husband Tom and sister Phyllis
and her husband John. Kae/Gran is survived by her loving family - son Gray
and daughter-in-law Jo-Ann, grandchildren Spencer and Olivia; and her
daughter Lyn and son-in-law David, grandson Hunter. Her dear nephews and
niece James and his wife Pam, John and his wife Sue, and Bonnie, and their
families also survive her, as do Dad's sisters, twin Roberta, Edith
(Rowland) and Jay (Charles) and their families. We wish to extend special
thanks to Mom's very kind and caring doctor, Dr. James Petzold, and to the
loving and caring staff at Shorncliffe Care Home in Sechelt and Good
Samaritan/Christenson Village in Gibsons. Private family memorial service to
be held. We could not have asked for better care for our Mom and Gran. In
lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kae's memory to the Canadian
Cancer Society, the Heart & Stroke Foundation of B.C., or to the charity of
your choice. (Mom will be the one in Heaven who pets all the stray dogs and
falls through thin ice because she just wants to find out if the lake really
is not frozen enough to walk on, like the sign says). And yes, Mom, we are
warm enough and don't need to put on our jackets. The stars will all be
brighter now thanks to Gran.

constantly remembered and missed lovingly and vividly by husband Daniel
McDonald, siblings Mady (and Heinz), Helene (and Francis), Pierrot (and

sunrises, sunsets, and efficiency in everyday tasks, will remind us of the
energy and verve which she invariably brought to all those activities and to
those who participated with her. Michèle, dedicated to doing what she could

Mildred Dorothy White (nee Daye) Mildred passed from this earth peacefully
in Mount Saint Joseph Hospital on Friday, April 11, 2008, surrounded by her
beloved Grandchildren Houston and Lindsey, her two Daughters-in-law Linda
and Roxanne, her Step-Daughter Joan and her Son Kevin. At 92 years old and
living independently, Millie was a true example of the hardy stock that grew
up and lived in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. She traveled out to the west coast
52 years ago with her new husband, Melvin White, to give birth to her only
child Kevin. Millie and Mel settled in Vancouver and made a life filled with
friends and family. Those that would come to call Mildred a friend knew her
as a giving person always ready to lend a hand when help was needed or an
ear if someone needed to talk through something important to them. A sincere
soul who believed that goodness would always prevail, Millie lived her life
gently day after day and always had a smile to greet you and the warmest hug
her 4 foot, 10 inch frame could give you. Mildred's friends, who were like
sisters, will miss her greatly. She will also be sadly missed by the women
in her life that were like the daughters she never had, as well as the many
people who considered Mildred to be their adopted Grandmother. Friends can
join us in celebrating Millie's life at Ocean View Funeral Home (4000
Imperial Street, Burnaby) on Tuesday, April 22nd. Viewing is at 1:00, with a
service and reception starting at 2:00. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be

Elaine Dorothy Willis (Hanvey) September 6, 1922 - April 12, 2008 With
flowers blooming in the sunshine outside her bedroom window, and her family
surrounding her with all their love, Elaine peacefully slipped away from us
on Saturday, April 12th. We have enormous admiration for Bill, her loving
husband of 51 years, who made sure, throughout her long illness, that she
was treated with dignity and the most tender care possible. Her primary
care-givers, Peachie and Marilin, became a part of our family over the many
years that they looked after Elaine. She will be in our hearts always, and
missed so dearly by Bill, their children Pat (and Pam), Joy, and Mike (and
Tamarah), and by their grandchildren Dave and Jack Reid, Jennie, Paul and
David Stafford, and Rylan Willis. Our extended family, especially John and
Jocelyn Willis, and Elaine's sister Isabelle Lynch and family in England
have been such a great support to us all. She will also be remembered very
fondly by her brother Maurice Hanvey in Washington state, her brother-in-law
Tom Barker (who sadly lost Ann just six weeks ago), and her many nieces and
nephews. Elaine grew up in England, working there and in France, before she
came to Canada on an adventure. Here in Vancouver she met Bill, and they
married in 1956 and had their three children. She devoted herself to caring
for her family in the early years, but as our needs became less, she was
able to put her energies towards helping build a ballet company for
Vancouver. For years she worked tirelessly with Maria Lewis to establish
Pacific Ballet Theatre, the fore-runner of Ballet British Columbia. Her
passions for ballet and music enriched her life, as did her love of
gardening. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother and leaves us
all with that great gift. We would like to thank Dr. Michael Knight for his
dedication to Elaine and Bill, and to all those who looked after her so
lovingly through the years. We are grateful to you all. In lieu of flowers,
donations to the North Shore Hospice would be appreciated.
