Dr. Judith Ilona Arato (nee Czumpf) February 9, 1944 - April 19, 2008 Judy,
a dynamic, witty and very talented lady, left us peacefully on the morning
of April 19, 2008 after a brief illness. Judy was born in Budapest, Hungary.
She attended medical school at the University of Hungary, and worked in a
hospital in Gyo?ngyo?s, Hungary. Her talent in medicine resulted in her
later graduating as an ear, nose and throat specialist. In 1972 she moved to
Montreal to be with her husband. She later moved to Langley, where she had a
busy ENT practice, helping hundreds of patients over the years. Judy passed
away at Langley Memorial Hospital, where knowing that she was in the hands
of her former colleagues would have brought her much comfort. Judy will be
missed for her sense of humour, and her ability to have an intelligent
conversation on almost any topic. Judy was a dog lover, and was heart broken
over the passing of all her dogs, especially Boga?r and Oniksz. Judy was
pre-deceased by her parents Ro?zsa and Ja?nos Czumpf, and her only brother,
La?szlo?. Judy leaves behind a nephew and niece in Hungary, La?szlo? and
Anna Czumpf, an aunt, Frances Czumpf, cousins Etelka and Antal Haasz, Zsuzsa
and Ro?zsa Kulcsa, and Joanne and Frances Sasvari. No service or flowers by
request. A remembrance for close family and friends will be held at a later
date.

"Toodle Loo!" Patricia Bergquist A pair of sandals casually dropped on the
sand is the last thing Patricia leaves behind. She's already shed street
clothes and baggage along with tensions stresses worries and other heavy
things. She slips into the foamy surf and it lifts her off her feet. As she
floats in the waves with the ocean and sky filling her senses, I wonder what
she ever wanted from this distant dry-land world. Words cannot express the
great sadness with which I announce the tragic death of my mother and my
"very best friend" Patricia Marguerite Bergquist (nee Taylor) born in
Vancouver BC Canada February 11, 1939 and died March 26, 2008. We loved,
laughed, and shared all of the days of her life as she did with her mother.
Predeceased by her parents William Ernest Taylor (1975), Myrtle Vira Taylor
(1978), and son Ronald William Bergquist (1993), she is survived by loving
family and loving friends. No service by request. No flowers by request. A
gathering for friends to celebrate Patricia's life will be arranged at a
later date in Osoyoos and on the coast in New Westminster. A memorial bench
will be placed in Canada's only natural desert in the town of Osoyoos BC on
the shores of Osoyoos Lake on the path where Patricia walked each day of the
latter years of her life. Sentiments of sympathy and donations for the
memorial bench can be mailed to P.O. Box 42582 RPO Columbia Square, New
Westminster,BC V3M 6L7 "Patricia: the last desert flower to bloom and the
most beautiful of all"

CHURCH Harold Peter Hilborne Peter's earthly journey came to an end five
days after his 82nd birthday. Peter was born in Sao Paulo, Brasil, to Harold
F. H. Church and Hilda H. (nee Owers). He was predeceased by his parents and
brother Ian E. H. Peter, a graduate of the New York School of Interior
Design, dedicated his life to raising interior design standards. He was
proud that the only interiors he hadn't worked on were those of a rail coach
and a plane. Peter lived and worked in Brasil, England, New York, and
Ontario before settling in Vancouver. His clients, tradespeople, and friends
all became intertwined to become an extended family. Peter was a frequent
traveler to many countries and enjoyed learning about different cultures and
languages. He also had an appetite for food from all corners of the world.
He was passionate about art, books, movies, music, and theatre. He held very
strong views on a wide range of subjects - and was never shy about sharing
these views. Peter's journey had recently become quite difficult as he
bravely faced a series of illnesses. His courageous struggle was assisted by
too many people to mention individually. Instead, we wish to thank the good
people at Vancouver General Hospital (the ER, Medical Assessment Unit, Ward
11A (ACE), and Palliative services), the Pacific Spirit Community Health
Centre (Home Hospice Program), and the BC Ambulance Service for providing
outstanding care in difficult circumstances. Peter will be remembered at a
memorial service to be held at St. Mary's Kerrisdale, 2490 West 37th Avenue,
Vancouver, at 2 pm on Friday, May 2. A Celebration of his life and work will
immediately follow the memorial service. Please contact 604-267-6334 or
email < > for additional information. In lieu of
flowers, people are asked to take a friend for lunch, in memory of Peter. We
have lost a true gentleman.

DYKE Sidney Latham May 31, 1916 - April 12, 2008, passed away with family at
his side, aided in fighting pneumonia and a stroke by the wonderful staff at
Abbotsford MSA Hospital. Sidney is survived by his wife Lee, sons Robin
(Marline), Larry and Terry, grandsons Rob and Jay, and brother Chris. After
a rustic upbringing influenced by his father's work as a civil engineer in
early 20th Century southern Alberta, Sidney prepared for a career in
commercial art by attending Calgary Institute of Technology and Art. War
service as navigator on North Atlantic convoy patrol aircraft intervened.
Post-war, he soon rose to direct graphic art departments for firms in
Toronto and Vancouver. This experience gave Sidney the background to
establish the first commercial art programme available in British Columbia
at Douglas College. All along, Sid painted watercolours as a hobby and
exhibited at commercial galleries in B.C., Alberta and Washington State. His
other passion was family history and he has left behind an 8 volume set of
"Footprints" that dates back to the 1700's. Sid gave himself over completely
to companionship with Lee during the later years of their 68 years of
marriage. A dedicated husband, he will also be remembered as a father who
sought to encourage his sons in their own aspirations rather than direct
their lives. A celebration of Sid's life will be held on Saturday, May 10,
2008 at 2:00pm at the Arbor Reception Lounge, Valley View Cemetery, 14644 -
72nd Ave., Surrey, BC. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the

ELLIS Dorothy May It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy
(Dot) on April 19, 2008 after a short illness. She was predeceased by her
life partner and best friend of nearly 60 years, Bob, in 2002. She is sadly
missed by her children: Doreen (Neil) leNobel, Stuart (Bonnie) Ellis, and
Susan Sumi. Also missing her are her grandchildren: Tracey, Renee, Jennifer,
Ryan, Joanna, Jiuna, R.J. and her great grandchildren: Angela, Jeremy,
Emilie, and Ellis, her many nieces, nephews and friends. She was known as
"Brutally Frank" but her heart was always tender. She was easy to get along
with and had a great sense of humour right up until she died. She had a keen
interest in the outdoors, was an avid gardener and loved a good mushroom
spore pattern. Bob taught her to ski and to drive: she retired from skiing
at 65 but was still driving at 89. In her middle years as she was rolling
her own cigarettes, good conversation abounded on her couch. She was a
member of 4 bridge clubs and spent many evenings dancing: round and square,
with her favourite partner. She was born Dorothy May Munro in Headingley,
Manitoba on July 23, 1918, moved to Calgary at 8 years of age, then moved to
B.C. to take up Nurse's Training at VGH. She graduated as an RN in 1942 and
has many wonderful memories and friends from that time. She married Bob in
1943 just before he went overseas to serve in WWII. She was a person of
strong likes: high on the list was boating with Bob, time spent at "The
Lot", and her family. In her later years, Dot showed her commitment to
family by instigating several family trips each year: skiing, boating and
sightseeing. A memorial service is planned at a date yet to be decided. Like
her husband before her, we will miss her forever. Donations can be made in
Dot's name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. and Yukon.

GRUNDIG Charlotte Grace (nee Pickford) May 20th, 1940 - April 23rd, 2008
Charlotte approached everything she did with humour, passion, and
enthusiasm - even her own illness. Born in Drumheller, Alberta, the daughter
of a Baptist Minister, she spent most of her life on the West Coast. She is
survived and deeply missed by her son Nuri, her daughter Tyana, and her two
sisters, Joan Emison and Jackie Nalos. Frank, her husband of 46 years,
passed away March 25, 2008. Charlotte was an artist, musician, painter and
music teacher on the North Shore, much-renowned for her ability to impart
her joy and love of music to all her students. She truly believed that the
gift of art and music should be enjoyed by all; to that end, she devoted
many years to comforting palliative care patients with her therapeutic harp
performances, in hospitals, hospices, and retreats. Her paintings, while
shown and sold in many galleries and restaurants in the Lower Mainland, were
also a fixture in many palliative settings. Charlotte was past president of
the ARCT Alumni and has held memberships and executive positions with the
West Vancouver Arts Council, the North Vancouver Arts Council, and the
Federation of Canadian Artists. Her many contributions to the arts community
were recently recognized by the YWCA; Charlotte Grundig has been nominated
for the 2008 YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in the field of Arts and
Culture. Charlotte had a true gift for opening her heart, her time, and her
home to everyone who met her; she had a warmth and irrepressible joy that
welcomed everyone, particularly those who enjoyed her often wicked and
barbed jibes (meaning only that she loved you). Her unabashed zest and
passion for life never diminished throughout her illness; she was
determined, and she succeeded, in finding joy with each new day. The
outpouring of kindness she received from her friends and acquaintances
during this time totally astounded her; she left this world feeling truly
blessed and beloved by so many. Charlotte Grundig was an inspiration - which
time can never fade. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the
Charlotte Grundig Memorial at the Palliative Care Program for the Lions Gate
Hospital Foundation. A Celebration will be held on Sunday, May 4th from 4-8
at the Vancouver Rowing Club

HARVEY Louisa Victoria (nee Ostman) April 22, 1913 - April 19, 2008 Louise's
life journey came to an end after a sudden illness, three days before her
95th birthday. She is deeply missed by her loving family - two sons, Keith
(Judi) and Chris (Suzan) and two grandchildren, Sadie and Grant. She was a
dedicated mother and grandmother. She was born in Vancouver to Ernst Fredrik
Ostman and Minnie (nee Wood). She married Thomas Wheatly Harvey on October
5, 1935 in Vancouver and moved to Whonnock where they set up their home and
started a family. In 1948, the family moved to Hope and became an active
participant in the business and community. She was predeceased by her
husband, Tom, sisters, Thelma Happy and Gina Kendrick, and brother Ernest
Ostman. She was a very active woman, who worked right up to the end of
March, 2008. She was also an active participant in her church. Her
inspiration, work ethic, kindness and compassion earned her much respect.
She always lived with a positive attitude and cared deeply for all her
friends and family. She lived her life with enthusiasm. She especially
enjoyed her little office at Canyon Agencies, where many friends and
acquaintances dropped by to chat. And also where many came to get married.
It kept her in touch with the town she loved and she often commented that
Hope was such a nice place to live. She leaves a great void in our lives. A
memorial service will be held on April 23 at 1:00 PM at the Anglican Church
in Hope (corner of Fraser Ave and Park St). We wish to thank Dr. Nyirenda
and the staff at Fraser Canyon Hospital for their dedication and kindness.
Special thanks also to her long time friends in the Eastern Star and
Anglican Church Womens Auxiliary. In lieu of flowers, donations to the
Anglican Church and/or Eastern Star would be appreciated.

DOROTHY BEATRICE (Bette) LECHTZIER Born November 29, 1927 to Albert and
Kathleen Heard, Bette grew up in Vancouver living the epitome of west coast
life. She attended Lord Kitchener Elementary, Lord Byng High and then UBC
where she joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and earned a B.A. (English).
Bette met Merton (Lechtzier) at a Vancouver Lawn Tennis Club dance and,
after converting to Judaism, married him on August 12, 1953 at Beth Israel
Synagogue. The Tennis Club became a central part of their lives both for
sport and friends and they were active members there for over five decades.
Mert and "Beebz" (as she was affectionately known) moved to Shaughnessy in
1955 and remained there for the next 40 years. They loved to travel and
spent many wonderful holidays with friends in exotic destinations. They were
also great entertainers and hosts, and their home became the venue of all
manner of parties over the decades. Though Bette was part of the Dr. Spock
generation, she was also a mother in the mould of Donna Reed. She was the
purveyor of the most wonderful comfort food (as we now know it) and had an
encyclopaedic knowledge of how to make secondary meals out of an original
source reflecting the thrift of her leaner years. She was also a resourceful
epicurean, leaping at every opportunity to retrieve fresh delicacies from
the country, blackberries from the lane or dandelion leaves from the
shoulder of the highway. Like Mert, Bette loved fashion but above that
style. Her nose for a good sale was legendary and she had a wonderful
ability to mix a modest wardrobe into something very chic. Bette was also
strongly independent and, as her motherly responsibilities began to wane,
pursued many projects on her own. To no one's surprise greater than her
husband, Bette became both a shrewd investor and successful B&B proprietor.
Above all else, Bette was great fun; a hybrid personality of (I Love) Lucy,
Carol Burnett, Mary Tyler Moore and Marty Feldman. She was a wonderful
friend and neighbour and the source of wild and wonderful antics and
stories. Bette had an infectious laughter which could permeate a room in an
instant. She was a great dancer (and loud singer), a wonderful raconteur,
would mimic any person at the drop of a hat, and a boundless source of old
English rhymes. She loved dark chocolate covered anything, liked to poke you
in the ribs after a minimal of prodding, and thought Michael Caine, Gene
Hackman and Gene Wilder were drop dead gorgeous (all them strangely having
coifs like her husband). She was always cold (especially the tip of her
nose), could stick her tongue out in more directions than most reptiles, and
was a little tornado of activity in the garden. In the late 1990s, dementia
took hold of Bette's personality, twisted it and slowly robbed us of her
unique laughter and charm. However, even through this difficult period,
Bette still managed on occasion to emit a little twinkle from her eye and a
merry laugh to brighten a room. During often desperate years, Mert was a
loyal and loving companion and caregiver of unlimited capacity who made any
sacrifice for his beloved wife. Bette escaped her torment and let go of life
on April 10th at the age of 80 in Vancouver. She has been, and will continue
to be, sorely missed by many and is irreplaceable. Bette was predeceased by
her beloved husband Merton in December 2006 and is survived by her sister
Sally Midwinter (James) of Ottawa; her three children, Matthew of London
(England), Paul (Jennifer Dolman) of Toronto, and Sally Rutledge (Jeffrey)
of Vancouver, as well as six grandchildren; Sam, Adam and Emma Rutledge, and
Harris, Sasha, and Abby Lechtzier. The family thanks Helen Combs for her
loving care and devotion to both our parents over five difficult years.

Lorne Thomas McLachlan November 13, 1946 ~ April 20, 2008 Lorne passed away
peacefully with family at his side after a hard fought battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Ini McLachlan. His children, Scott and wife
Jenny, Colin and wife Tanya, Lisa and husband Craig and Jay. His
grandchildren, Sidney, Ben, Emily and Sophia. Brother Morris and wife Jan
and nieces, Sherry and Wendy and their families. Lorne had many interests in
his full life with his family coming first. His passion for fishing and
lifelong love of running were more than just hobbies. They were as much a
part of him as the moustache he always sported. The world of fishing is a
gift he passed on to his grandchildren. To them, fishing and "Papa" are
synonymous and will always be remembered as such. His personal and
professional experiences took Ini and himself on many adventures. The
opportunities to work abroad gave them so many wonderful experiences and led
to many great friendships. "What is the use of living, if it be not to
strive for noble causes and to make this muddled world a better place for
those who will live in it after we are gone?" WC Lorne's 100% commitment to
everything he was a part of was contagious and for everyone who knew him and
all the causes he fought for, our lives are better for having had him in it.
He touched so many people in so many ways and his contributions to all of
our lives are immeasurable. He will be forever in our hearts. Tight Lines

NELSON Judith "Judy" (nee Foex) It is with tremendous sadness that we
announce the sudden passing of our sweet, caring mother on April 21st, 2008
at the age of 67. Judy was born in Chatham, Ontario on October 16th, 1940 to
Harold and Phyllis Foex and attended Chatham College, Neucha?tel Junior
College in Switzerland followed by Victoria Collegiate at the University of
Toronto where she met her husband. Following her marriage, Judy and her
family moved to Vancouver and the North Shore where she raised her children
and settled for the past 40 years. Apart from a few years when she relocated
to Davis, California to complete her PhD in the field of Entomological
Science, Judy had always called North Vancouver her home. She is loved and
sadly missed by her daughter Andrea (Xavier), son Brian (Deborah), her 4
grandchildren (Braeden, Abby, Cameron and Maeryn), sisters Caroline (Jerry)
and Elizabeth, Roger and many, many dear friends and acquaintances. Mom had
a generous and exuberant personality that drew friendships wherever she
went. She was smart, loved a joke, was quick with a smile and genuinely
enjoyed doing things for others. Judy adored spending time with her children
and grandchildren and cherished the fact that she played such an important
part in their lives. She loved to cook and bake - many loved ones were the
lucky recipients of her pies and custom-created birthday cakes. Judy loved
to play games with whoever would join her, from her regular bridge club
get-together, to teaching new games to her grandchildren. Judy also enjoyed
singing, reading, listening to music, quilting, knitting, and spending time
with friends. She was a Master Gardener and volunteer with the Van Dusen
Botanical Garden Association and an enthusiastic member of the Cecilia
Ensemble choir. A proud mother, devoted Nana, and dear friend to many, Judy
will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A Celebration of Life will be
held on Tuesday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at the West Vancouver Yacht Club, 5854
Marine Drive. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mom may be made to
the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation or the Cecilia Ensemble. "Anyone for a

most, her home. Judy was born 63 years ago in Vancouver to her parents
Kathleen (Tynan) and Jack Barrell. It was only a few weeks ago that Judy and

EDITH MILLICENT SZYWALA December 10, 1914 - April 17, 2008 It is with great
sadness that the family of Millie Szywala announce her passing. Aunty Millie
was born in Forward, SK and had 11 brothers and sisters. She `migrated' west
to the Vancouver area in the 1940's to join much of the family already
there. Living in Deep Cove, she worked in her brother's post office and then
in the late `50's moved to the North Delta area and worked in a doctor's
office. Wherever she was, family was her joy. In December 1968 Aunty Millie
married Josef Szywala and they spent many happy years together gardening,
traveling and spending time with family. She was a wonderful wife, sister,
aunt and friend. Millie was a quiet but great influence in many lives. Her
faith made her a giant even though she was a small woman. If she said she
would pray for you, you could count on her doing just that. She lived her
last 1 1/2 yrs. in Saskatoon, mainly at Circle Drive Special Care Home,
Saskatoon. Now she is home with her Lord, who she loved so dearly. Millie
will be missed by her sisters and brother, Marjorie Jessop; Connie (Mike)
Foster; Flo Batchelor; Fred (Ruby) Dryhurst, as well as her many nieces and
nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her husband, Joe, in
2002; her parents, David and Beatrice Dryhurst; siblings, Melba, Beatrice,
Ethel, David, Wilfred, Edward and Tommy. We want to thank the staff at
Circle Drive Special Care Home for making Aunty Millie's last days very
special. She knew there was something unique there on the very first day. In
celebration of Millie's life, a memorial will be held on Thursday, May 29,
at 1:30 pm at Sonrise Church, 5588 188th Street, Surrey. Lunch to follow. In
lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Gideons or Circle Drive Special
Care Home. Romans 5:1 - 2 "Çwe have peace with GodÇwherein we stand, and
rejoice in hope of the glory of God."

WALLIN Eileen (nee Wallace)A bright new star arrived in the sky at 1:30am on
April 22nd, 2008. Every night this star will shine down upon her loved ones:
her three children, Brenda, Dianne and Greg, her five grandchildren, Kelly,
Kristin, Sarah, Tessa and Jesse and her great grandson (her little angel)
Owen. Predeceased by her husband Reuban Allan, many loved brothers and
sisters, and endeared friends Daniella, Helen and Bruno. Eileen was born in
Verdun, Quebec, daughter of John and Janet Wallace, and met Reuban (a member
of the Canadian Navy) in Halifax, in 1945, while serving as a wren in WWII.
They married in Victoria, BC, in 1946, and settled in Burnaby where they
raised their three children. Eileen was a dedicated mother who enjoyed time
gardening, swimming, curling, ice skating and entertaining. Eileen could
often be found swimming early morning laps in the family pool, tending her
rose gardens and hanging baskets or planning lavish dinner parties. Eileen
was also an avid dancer, and in her later years greatly enjoyed getting
dressed up for a night of ballroom dancing with her good friend Bruno.
Eileen supported her husband and was always by his side in establishing his
very successful business. In later years, Eileen traveled extensively with
Reuban to Europe, Asia, New Zealand, the Caribbean and her favorite place to
share with her family, Maui, HA. The two of them also spent an abundant
amount of time on their second home, the Golf Commander, traveling and
exploring the seas of the West Coast together. Being a Grandmother was one
thing that Eileen cherished deeply. She was a loving, attentive, generous,
fun, and nurturing Nanny. She was always there when she was needed and was
often the guest of honor at her grandchildren's tea parties. Eileen was a
very committed friend and built long-lasting friendships with numerous,
special people throughout her life. If you touched Eileen's heart she would
never let go and she would cherish her friendships deeply. Eileen is
remembered by two special friends, Margaret and Ida, who meant a great deal
to her and provided wonderful support for her throughout the years. Eileen
will always be remembered by the people who loved her as a lady with class,
beauty, dignity and grace. Her personality and beauty radiated from her and
attracted those around her. Like Eileen, her star will now shine brightly
upon her loved ones sending guidance and protection along their way until
they meet again - for a dance amongst the stars. A celebration of Eileen's
life will be held on Wednesday, April 30th at 2:00pm at Ocean View Funeral
Home, 4000 Imperial St., Burnaby.

WINTEMUTE Errol Irving May 11, 1916 - April 11, 2008 Errol passed away
unexpectedly but peacefully at home early in the morning of April 11th. His
beloved wife Betty Irene predeceased him. Holding his memory close are his
three daughters Meredith Wilson (Richard), Jane Wintemute (Linda), and Carol
Paulsen (Don), cherished grandchildren Michael (Adrienne), Sarah (Andrew),
Barbara (Justin) and Kathleen (Todd), four precious great- grandchildren
(Gavin, Wade, Jordan, and Lauren) and his devoted sheltie, Benson. He will
be sadly missed by sister Elaine Tyler, her husband Walt, nieces Suzanne and
Janet, and cousins in the Burr and Wintemute families. His dear companion
Muriel Collins and family share our loss. Errol was born in New Westminster
into a pioneering family. He lived his entire life in the Lower Mainland
area, the last four decades in Tsawwassen. Ever grateful for the support of
family and community in his youth, Errol became a dedicated community
supporter himself. He gave generously to such organizations as the Royal
Columbian Hospital Foundation, the Delta Hospital Foundation, the Fraser
River Discovery Society and the Ladner Boys and Girls Club. He received many
honours for his service including the Queen's Jubilee Medal in 2002. Errol
was passionate about his work. He enjoyed a successful seventy-five year
career in the coastal lumber industry, specializing in yellow cedar. His
knowledge, vision, integrity and work ethic earned him the respect and
admiration of colleagues throughout the Pacific Northwest. His last day `on
the job' at Delta Cedar Products was Thursday April 10th, the day before his
passing. Errol was a man of immense energy and enthusiasm. A keen sportsman,
he played golf and tennis competitively. He also enjoyed skiing, fishing,
gardening and memorable times with family and friends on Galiano Island and
in Palm Desert. These past few years he looked forward to Sunday night
family dinners at his home. We will always remember him for the joy he took
in life's simple pleasures. These he unfailingly welcomed with the two words
"Oh Boy! " Errol had a great run. He did so much for us all. A memorial
service in celebration of Errol's life will take place at Queens Ave. United
Church, 529 Queens Ave., New Westminster, B.C. on Friday May 2nd, at 11:00
A.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Errol Wintemute Boys

and Girls Club is also holding a tribute to Errol on Saturday, May 3rd at 2
