9/29/1920 CAPT. F. M. COOMBS, O.B.E. RETURNS FROM OVERSEAS

After five years service overseas, F. M. COOMBS, V.S., arrived in Oak River
on Thursday's train, being the last to return of the Oak River men who went
to the Great War. Capt. COOMBS received his commission as lieutenant with
the R.A.V.C. in February of 1915, and immediately proceeded to England.
Three weeks after arriving in England, he went to France and remained on
duty there and in Belgium until June of the present year. He was promoted
to the rank of captain in 1916, and after being mentioned twice in
dispatches he was appointed to the Order of the British Empire. He received
his decoration at the hands of the Duke of York in July, the King being
absent at the funeral of the late Empress Eugenie. Capt. COOMBS came over
on the "Empress of Britain" with his family who had been in Scotland since
last August, arriving at Quebec on the 6th, inst.
The community is glad to welcome back one who has so well served and
represented his country.

SCHOOL REPORT FOR JUNE (in part)

The Oak River consolidated school showed very substantial progress during
the term just closed. .....The enrollment was made up of 64 boys and 81
girls. .....Below will be found a detailed report of the several rooms and
grandes.
