>From the Oak River Post, Oak River, MB
12/26/1917 LETTER FROM PTE. LANGRIDGE
France, Nov. 27, 1917.
Dear Ed:
I have just received a parcel from the Patriotic Ladies of Oak River and
I felt I must write and thank them for it and also on behalf of the lads out
here, who are receiving such fine parcels. I do not see so many of the Oak
River boys as I used to for various reasons. You know the job scatters in
more than one sense, but I know they welcome the presents just as I do
supposing they don't write, and I would like the Ladies to know that they
send exactly what is needed out here. I am glad to tell you I am jake, been
out here nearly sixteen months, never been sick nor sorry, over the top
twice at Vimy and Arleux, been under a few of old Fritz's bombardments,
slept in cellar and castle, dugout and ditch. I am happy to say Fritz has
never been able to hit me very hard yet. I'll admit he's scared me once or
twice, though. I am now expecting my fourteen days leave to England, where
my old folks still live. At present I am on a staff job. I don't expect
they will send me into the line again, as I am a bit above the age limit,
but I am fit and well and expect to lay a few thousand bricks yet. That
will be "Aprez la Guerre," of course.
Well, Ed., I must now conclude with the best of good wishes to you all
and good luck to the Patriotic Ladies of Oak River - they well deserve their
title. So wishing you the compliments of the season, I remain,
Pte. F. W. LANGRIDGE, 151782,
16th Batt. Canadiane,
3rd Brigade Training Depot,
British Expeditionary Force, France.

3/6/1918 PTE. ROY NESBITT RETURNS
A large crowd was present at the station last Wednesday night to welcome
home another of Oak River's returned soldiers. Pte. Roy NESBITT, just
recently arrived in Canada from overseas. Roy joined up with the 79th
Battalion, of Brandon, in October, 1915, and left for overseas with the same
unit on April 20th, 1916. He went to France in June with reinforcements to
the 27th Battalion and after four months in the trenches was wounded in the
chest during the Somme drive in September. Up to the time of sailing for
Canada he was in England and speaks well of the usage the Canadian boys get
while convalescing there. The returned hero is looking and feeling in the
best of health and spirits and expects his discharge shortly.
