Subject: [CAN-MHSA] MHSA visits their counterpart in La Crete

You may or may not know about the excursion on Sept. 26 to La Crete, a 12 hr bus ride straight north.
We will be visiting the pioneer village museum established and maintained by the Mennonite population in that most northerly outpost in AB. The bus ride will cost you $110 each but be worth every cent.
To register please send your name address etc. and the fare to Ralph Dahl, 26 Varcrest Place NW Calgary, T3K 4G3. We will need to have your registration on or before Aug. 31.
The folks planning the event promise to regale us with stories of their pioneer life which began in the early 30's. The community is now large and growing with all the modern conveniences imaginable except quick access to suburbia.
They also offered to host visitors in their homes or if you insist, there is a motel with rooms starting at $65. At present we have reserved one bus, returning on Sunday, Sept 28. However, we would contract a second one if enough of you sign up. If there is a second one or if everyone can stay an extra day, we will return on Mon. the 29th. That gives opportunity to attend church with the local folk, and spend the afternoon in a variety of other activities. One that has been suggested by them is a boat trip upstream on the Peace River to Carcajou, the site where the first Mennonite settlement was erected. Some of the original homes are still intact and accessible.
This promises to be a weekend of rich and meaningful historical dialogue and an introduction to an almost exclusively low german speaking, fully bilingual population living in the vast agricultural and forestry economy in northern AB.
